ETA: Team Jersey (my cats) found the ball of yarn ARG

I'd say more a play on the ball of yarn - Ariadne gave Thesus a ball of yarn so that he wouldn't get lost in the minotaur's maze.

As soon as I saw the yarn, my brain converted "Ariadne" to "Arachne", and I was thinking there might be some weaving involved. Probably more fun that it lends towards a maze, though!

I've always liked the story of Ariadne because it's where my name (Ariana) comes from.

I don't think the recipient's cities are important - I live in a village about 40-odd miles outside London, and I'm sure they could have found a London resident if it were important to this thing. It may be the countries that are important, as UK, Germany, US and Canada have all hosted summer Olympics. UK, US and Canada all competed in the 1920 Games, but apparently Germany was banned.

I wonder why the 1920 Games are so significant? The Wikipedia page has various interesting bits of info, including the fact that it was the first time Olympic flag was flown. I guess this might link into something to do with the rings Confused

The reference numbers on my cards are: XXAAR1024 (the 1 might be an I - it's quite hard to read the number on this one), XAALN032, and RAAIM056.

(it's the first time I'm posting a pic, so please correct me if I'm doing it the wrong way)

I definetively (sp?) think it has something to do with the olympic symbol/logo - the rings. When seeing the photos of the balls of yarn my girlfriend asked if anyone found out to which countries they corresponded... I hadn't thought of that yet. And now that I think about all this and the rings, could the colors of the yarn correspond to the colors of the 5 rings? And should we expect 5 packages to 5 people, or just 4, because one is missing?

well I guess I'll do my thing and set up a wiki Wink
sounds like we'll be getting more to organize... I like theory of 5 (or 4)recipients.

Another box received

I got a box, mailed, here in San Jose, California.

Contents basically the same as others have received: poster, 3 1920 Olympics postcards with messages in rough calligraphy on the back. Outside of box says "This is a clew! 03.03.08" Ball of yarn is red, the paper inside is like one from a Chinese fortune cookie. On one side: "You will soon demonstrate great courage." On the other, "You will soon discover an alternate reality. The adventure begins when you meet Ariadne. www.findthelostring.com"

The box is hand-addressed, in a different hand I think than the calligraphy found on the contents. The box was mailed yesterday from San Francisco, zip 94107, which is the east side of the city, China Basin, Pacific Bell Park and Potrero Hill (more about 94107 here).

I also note that the date March 3 is not question-marked, but March 4, March 5 and March 11 are. And August 24 is not, so I suspect that we are talking about a game that has a set beginning and end, as World Without Oil did.

Anyone else puzzling over THELO STRING in THE LOST RING?

I'll post pictures when I get a chance.

I'm sure there is NO potential bioweapon or other dangerous items involved in this promotion (that would be very counterproductive given the quick-to-jump-to-conclusions of world-wide law enforcement). However, having to find something or someone important to the Olympics is killer!!!!!

/me rushes through the rest of her work day, wondering if there will be a package.

Edit: Nope, no package for the mouse.

The Olympic emblem is (at the moment, interpretations seem to have developed over a period of time) symbolic of the 5 inhabited continents (taking the Americas as one, and omitting Antarctica for lacking people, sport, and easily accessible places to get a cup of coffee). No particular ring or color officially represents any particular continent; the message is one of unity (thus the rings interlocking). See the all-knowing Wikipedia for reference and further information.

Um. Woo!

So, I got a box too. Pics are on flickr at the link above.

Bulletpoints:

- Green Yarn
- Photos includes two that others have received and one of a crowd with the ID XAALN032.
- "You will soon demonstrate great wisdom."
- Everything else is pretty similar to the other packages received.

The clews are not identical. There are different solid colors and even the multi-colored ones are not the same. It means something, I tells ya!

Of the solid, we have red and green. No black, yellow, or blue (yet!).

They could go around meaning a lot of things. I just think that is significant, because otherwise, why not just send the same color to everyone?

I love string. Theoretical and otherwise.

Maybe the colors of the yarn can be used to sequence in the reference numbers based on the order of the colors of the olympic rings - blue - black - red - yellow - green.

Problem is that your (hmrpita's) yarn doesn't seem to be standard olympic colors based on the picture that was posted.

Ok, a bare wiki's up and I set up a page to track details. really rough right now, just a list of things that seem to vary between the packages, just in case.

There's a user by the name of findthelostring on dotSUB.com.
No videos posted (yet) and not sure how long ago the account was set-up.

Probably not related, but out there, just in case.

Can't wait for the site to go up so I can register my address with another PM team. Sad
