From aliendial: Apologies - apparently I have mod-ly powers in this forum and clicked 'edit' rather than 'reply' AND deleted the rest of myf's message in crafting my reply. I'm so sorry!

Aliendial, can you check what the back of the slip of paper says? So far, it looks like most of them have said different things.

The Olympic emblem is (at the moment, interpretations seem to have developed over a period of time) symbolic of the 5 inhabited continents (taking the Americas as one, and omitting Antarctica for lacking people, sport, and easily accessible places to get a cup of coffee). No particular ring or color officially represents any particular continent; the message is one of unity (thus the rings interlocking). See the all-knowing Wikipedia for reference and further information.

My wildass spec:

The lost ring is Antarctica. Saving the Antarctic from global warming, would help "save the world".

I was more or less randomly Googling and found this page that talks about a proposal made to the International Olympic Comittee a while back to amend the Olympic flag by adding a sixth ring:

Quote:
The traditional flag of the IOC should be amended by adding an orange ring around the five rings symbolizing the five continents. This "sixth ring" would symbolize the Earth, on which live all the athlets. Orange would symbolize "a new planetary dawn standing for the unity of all nations".

I thought it was a funny little fact in light of "The Lost Ring" vs. the Olympics where the current flag was introduced.

EDIT: Hmm, the forum is not correctly rendering that url because of the @! in there... Neutral

2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing

The Beijing olympics will be from 8th August to 24th.

Picking up on what riquardo said earlier, this certainly seems to be tied in to the Beijing Summer Olympics. "Secret for a very long time" - maybe an artifact from the Olympic games of antiquity? Clues about which surfaced at the 1920 games (or so the story goes)?

What is the connection between 1920 Antwerp and 2008 Beijing?

Re: colors - linked to the Beijing Olympics mascots, maybe? From Wikipedia:

Quote:
The Fuwa (Chinese: 福娃; pinyin: Fúwá; literally "good-luck dolls") were unveiled as the mascots of the games by the National Society of Chinese Classic Literature Studies on November 11, 2005, at an event marking the 1000th day before the opening of the games. They were originally named "The Friendlies", but this name was dropped as Chinese officials were worried that it would be misunderstood as "friendless" or "friend lies." The Fuwa consist of five members that incorporate fish, giant panda, fire, Tibetan antelope, and swallow designs. They roughly correspond with the five elements of Chinese philosophy: water, metal, fire, wood, and earth, but none of them represent metal, and sky is not an element. The Fuwa each have as their primary color one of the colors of the five Olympic Rings. The five Fuwa are named Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying, and Nini. When the first syllable of each of the five names are said together, the result is the phrase Běijīng huānyíng nĭ which means "Beijing welcomes you".

Also, an interesting note from the article Giskard posted above. The original flag from the 1920 Antwerp Olympics, was stolen by an American athlete named, Hal Haig Prieste. He returned it, at the age of 103, during the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
