I'm very interested in the Lost Games stuff. I hope the Lost Game is Tombstone Poker! Smile

Okay, so I had a chat with Lucie. Not much came out of it that's new but I did discover that she kept a diary in her first days after waking up.

Here is a transcript of our Gtalk chat with a translation at the bottom. I was very pleased with how much I was able to understand and respond without having to resort to a robo-translator. (German I took in Jr. High, French I took in High School and at University.) We didn't get to talk much before she had to go because I took my time trying to understand what she said, figuring out how to say it back in French without peeking and then needing to use the character map because I don't have an international keyboard. Smile

Bruce? Could we get a link to that on the main page?

Also, in response to an earlier question the Language Resource page on the Wiki is here...

Well, I'd say:

EUREKA!

I'd written to him:

Dear Mr. Eli Hunt,

I was fascinated by your interesting podcast. And I want to know more.

Best regards,

waiting for reply

Eli Hunt's vidcasts on dotsub are here:

http://dotsub.com/home/user/index.php?target=5916

Conveniently enough, they have been pre-subtitled into Chinese, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish and Japanese...

So it's pretty clear what we're supposed to do with them..

Newbie, found out about this game via a Wired.com article, just wanted to post my speculation.

Quote:
Missing ring/continents/olympic flag:
There is a tradition that says the rings on the olympic flag represent 5 "continents": Africa, The Americas (S. and N. as one), Asia, Australia and Europe.
So far amnesiacs have woken up in Africa, (S.) America, Europe, and 2 in Asia. No one from Australia. This could mean that the lost ring is in Australia. However, since Ariadne is urging us to find more like her, I suspect an amnesiac from Australia will emerge soon (there are 39 labyrinths listed for Australia in the World Wide Labyrinth Locator). Also, there are 2 amnesiacs in Asia, so maybe there are multiples from the other continents

I strongly agree with this...I thought the fact there were five of them was important (five rings of the flag) until you guys found Lucie. But 4+ years of high school french hasn't gone completely to rot so I can mostly understand her writings with a little dictionary help. (I wish I could say the same for my 1 year of Mandrin classes.)

The "concinent" represented on the flag is technicaly "Oceanea", which means Australia and the south Pacific islands surounding it (New Zealand and the Philipines are the two big ones I can think of).
But the lack of anyone having been found in Australia/Oceanea yet, I think is pretty signifigant, it's the only "ring" of the flag not represented so far. It could be that there's another amnesiac there, possibly even Renata. I can try asking the ausies I know if there are popular social sites specific to them that haven't been canvased.

I was thinking Renata might have been the lost ring until you guys found Eli's site.

Direct link to the second podcast which isn't on the main Eli site yet.
http://dotsub.com/films/theancient/index.php?autostart=true&language_setting=en_2944

The second podcast details the agonothetai (of which there were 6), ancient gamekeepers of the Oympics with religious ties. Eli found stories regarding the Paliki chamber where information relating to the agonothetai and the ancient games was hidden.

One of the bits of information related to the 6 ttributes of the athlete, which are unlike what we would expect (speed, strength, etc).

They were
sofia = wisdom
thumos = courage
chanilon = charm
dikaiosune = leadership
sophrosune = temperence
mythopeia = storytelling

I should be working and not reading this stuff, so I don't have time for the full transcript.

Interesting spec, Weezel. Didn't someone earlier in the thread mention that Noriko wrote a lot and told good stories?

Re: The Lost Games
second podcast

Eli Hunt has a second podcast, entitled "The Ancient Game Keepers."

It discusses clues that the original Olympic judges, the Agonothetai (see http://www.theantikas.org/c18.html, with thanks to Mr. Hunt for the link), may have "gone underground" but continued to exist and participate after modern historians believe they were replaced with Hellanodikai. * In particular, there is a reference to a partial rubbing of a tablet extolling the virtues essential to an Olympic champion... but instead of the usual strength, stamina, and so on, they are:

  • wisdom
  • courage
  • charm
  • leadership
  • temperance
  • storytelling

Gee, who knew that ARG-ing was an Olympic event! Mr. Green

* "--Kai"? Did someone say "--Kai"?

EDIT: Dammit, y'all are too fast. Self-Trout.

Actually, those were taken directly from the podcast, so I didn't actually spec anything.. you did!! And a good spec and jump it is!

Our 6 could be shades of the game keepers, or embodiments of the 6 attributes.. Nice magic number 6.

Incidentally. Eli's other podcast.

The Ancient Game Keepers

Says that "Earth-Shaker" was written on the wall of the chamber.

This, I can tell you because he was my High School Mascot, is a reference to Poseidon.

I'll start looking into any connections between Poseidon and the Olympics.

Eli Hunt
York?

According to Eli's biography, he grew up in the city of York. I don't know whether he still lives there, but isn't that where Markus is right now? Maybe someone who's in touch with one of them (which, alas, does not as yet include me) could put them in touch with each other?

Well, i believe that the word EARTH-SHAKER is in reference of Knossos, an archeological site in Crete, and we could see that the legend is this:

The palace is about 130 meters on a side and since the Roman period has been suggested as the source of the myth of the Labyrinth, an elaborate mazelike structure constructed for King Minos of Crete and designed by the legendary artificer Daedalus to hold the Minotaur, a creature that was half man and half bull and was eventually killed by the Athenian hero Theseus.

Labyrinth comes from the word labrys, referring to a double, or two-bladed, axe. Its representation had a religious and probably magical significance. It was used throughout the Mycenaean world as an apotropaic symbol; that is, the presence of the symbol on an object would prevent it from being "killed." Axe motifs were scratched on many of the stones of the palace. It appears in pottery decoration and is a theme of the Shrine of the Double Axes at the palace, as well as of many shrines throughout Crete and the Aegean. The etymology of the name is not known; it is probably not Greek. The form labyr-inthos uses a suffix generally considered to be pre-Greek.

The location of the labyrinth of legend has long been a question for Minoan studies. It might have been the name of the palace or of some portion of the palace. Throughout most of the 20th century the intimations of human sacrifice in the myth puzzled Bronze Age scholars, because evidence for human sacrifice on Crete had never been discovered and so it was vigorously denied. The practice was finally verified archaeologically (see under Minoan civilization). It is possible that the palace was a great sacrificial center and could have been named the Labyrinth. Its layout certainly is labyrinthine, in the sense of intricate and confusing.

Many other possibilities have been suggested. The modern meaning of labyrinth as a twisting maze is based on the myth.

Several out-of-epoch advances in the construction of the palace is thought to have originated the myth of Atlantis

AND WHAT ABOUT ATLANTIS????
