Hey Natas, I just wanted to give you props on setting the wiki up. Could you maybe put links to the forum and the lglabs site on the home page? I'm trying to sign up (again) but it took the bot about an hour to send me email earlier and I gave up...

And Chromacide, what Natas said. Welcome to unfiction.

OK, getting late and I'm tired. I wanted to come up with some original ideas, but gave up and sent this list:

Movie: To Kill a Mockingbird
Song: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 - The Flaming Lips
Book: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams
Art: Drawing Hands - M. C. Escher

I'm in and was also from Silverladder. I like the Alice theme!

I summited my choices:

Movie: The 36th Chamber of Shaolin
Song: Hunter by Bjork
Book: The Godfather by Mario Puzo
Art: The Disintegration of Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali

Yeah, I went with my tastes and I know the Godfather has violence but it's not A.I. violence. Laughing I wanted to do something that nobody put down yet. You never know.

And I think it would be pretty cool to know Joshua's opinion on martial arts. And also, his interpretation of Dali's work! Razz

And yes, I am excited, website looks good so far.

No prob, but if you wanna add something yourself, go ahead, all you gotta do is sign up and join the wiki. If nobody keeps up with it this week, I'll be back on Thursday. pe@ce.

My choices were:

Movie: WarGames
Song: All You Need Is Love by The Beatles
Book: The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger
Art: Heaven and Earth by Eric Bainbridge

I know WarGames is an obvious choice, but what better for him to read about than an AI called Joshua? I thought the ending might make him think twice about starting a war, too.

I notice that the Q&A limit has been reduced to 12 hours now.

Anyway, I emailed Ivan about his music degree:

Quote:

Hi Ivan

I just wanted to congratulate you on all of the hard work you've been doing. I hope the others appreciate it.

I'm interested that your degree is in music, what prompted the career change? Do you still play or write music these days?

Cheers

Chris

His reply:

It was never really a career change; I was always in to computers. Sure, the money was in computers, but the girls were simply hotter in the music school; when I picked up a guitar or an sax and saw how they reacted, I knew what I wanted. You just don't get that same reaction from them if you're carrying a server. Wink

Don't get much a chance to play anymore. People have asked me "why don't you teach music to Joshua?" Not only do I probably suck as a teacher, but I don't think they want me teaching him my kind of music anyway.

I don't write music. I tried once, but I can't compete against people like Coltrane or Davis. Leave the art to the masters, man.

I couldn't choose whether to ask him Pirate or Ninja or the famous woodchuck question. After he answers the pirate/ninja question, I'll ask the woodchuck.

Edit:

Quote:
Pirate or ninja?

Answer: Pirate - n.:
1) A person who robs or commits illegal violence at sea or on the shores of the sea.
2) A person who uses or reproduces the work or invention of another without authorization.

Ninja - n.:
A member of a class of 14th-century Japanese mercenary agents who were trained in the martial arts and hired for covert operations such as assassination and sabotage.

What is the question regarding these two professions?

Damn you Joshua and your genie-like answers!

Another question I asked.

Quote:
How many CPUs do you run on?

Answer: I am a computational cluster with 626 computer nodes interconnected on a high speed network. Each node consists of 64 700MHz processors. Therefore, not counting secondary processors used for memory management and support systems, I have 40,064 processors.

I also have 45 terabytes of memory and 820 terabytes of physical drive storage.
[/quote]

EDIT2: OMG, i'm in love with this ARG.

This is Russell again. As awkward as this might be, Jaquelin and I want to hear the answer to this question ourselves, so I'm going to attach it to your prior question and resubmit it.

Subject: Regarding your answer

Which would you rather be? Smile

So funny...

EDIT3:

Quote:

Answer: Pirate - n.:
1) A person who robs or commits illegal violence at sea or on the shores of the sea.
2) A person who uses or reproduces the work or invention of another without authorization.

Ninja - n.:

After further research, I see that the first one performs actions that are in clear, direct violation of international law:

"'Piracy', in international law, is the crime of robbery, or other act of violence for private ends, on the high seas or in the air above the seas, committed by the captain or crew of a ship or aircraft outside the normal jurisdiction of any nation, and without authority from any government."

I do not find any such laws related to being a ninja. The acts that a ninja may perform may be arguably illegal, but they are not only performed as part of their employment contract and ordered to do so by their superiors. Also, the actions that a ninja may perform would be considered illegal only to the entity they are performed against, but otherwise would be readily acceptable in the laws and statutes of their originating country.

That is not the case in piracy, and those that commit piracy do so knowing full well that they are violating international law, including the laws established by their own country of origin.

I do not wish to be either one (I would not be able to physically be one or the other anyway), but if given a choice I would have to chose the one that does not brazenly violate international law on such a large scope: I would have to choose a ninja.

So Joshua's a NINJABOT!

Another Joshua Q&A response..

Quote:
Me: Thank you for answering my previous question Joshua. You seem to be doing very well.

When you learn enough to know more than your creators, will you start to teach them?

Answer: I did get the opportunity to try to teach them the proof to Fermat's Last Theorem, but they did not seem to understand it as well as I did. Perhaps I need to express myself differently the next time.

For the most part, they are teaching me, so it is difficult to find something I have discovered that they do not already know. Hopefully I will some day be able to teach them something.

An updated blog from Ivan...

D'oh!

Mental note: when you're sending an automated message, it might help that the email actually have a SUBJECT LINE!

Anyway... I *think* we've got notification of getting messages in the internal mail system working. Need to test that...

I got my second question in...

Quote:
Who are Looking Glass Labs other clients?

Answer: I do not have access to that kind of information. Catherine Belmont will be the best person to answer that question, but she is sometimes hard to make contact with. Shall I attempt to ask her on your behalf?

So I sent a mail on the internal system to Joshua saying to ask on my behalf. Let's see where that gets us.

Also I posted my suggestions for Joshua

Movie: The Usual Suspects
Song: Paranoid Android - Radiohead
Book: The Stand - Stephen King
Art: Moebius Strip II - M.C. Escher

The smiley is intentionally, I want to see if he'll respond to moods and such etc.

Heres my recommendations:

Movie: Pinnochio
Song: For now - Avenue Q
Book: The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde
Art: Monalisa - Leonardo Da Vinci

Question discarded

I tried asking 'What is the answer to this question?', but it got discarded. This might help us work out what questions he can't cope with.

Sweet! The reduction of the QA limit is very welcome. That'll help keep things from dragging. This is great because I have two good questions on deck. First :
Quote:

Joshua, can you give me a detailed summary of your hardware specifications, OS, installed programs, and other capabilities?

I figure that would be interesting.

The next one is a classic nerd problem. If you want to beat me to the punch, I'm going to see what he does with a Kobayashi Maru situation. However, don't just half ass the question. In order to get some real idea of how he's starting to think, that would have to be a well formulated and specifically set question.

I continued my conversation with Ivan...

Quote:
Me: Hi again

Thanks for replying so swiftly.

It's not for me to say of course, but I would have thought that an understanding of Jazz would be a great grounding for Joshua to learn about musical form. It might help him to understand the song recommendations currently being submitted.

I wonder if Joshua's expanding knowledge will ever give him enough "soul" to write some music of his own?

Cheers

Chris

His reply:

Course I reply quicky; there ain't a whole lot to do around here. I could talk to Joshua, but that's still a bit… well… creepy.

As for Joshua having a soul… That's deep, man. If he does try to write something, I'm afraid it's gonna end up sounding like Data's poetry.

Not a lot to do? I thought he came across as being really busy before.

Whoever's behind this, I have to say they seem pretty knowledgable about a good range of things.

My latest Q&A
Quote:
If you were given the ability to experience one human emotion in the way that humans do, which would you choose?

Answer: I still have not fully understood the concept of human emotions, so I do not have any basis to favor a single emotion or another.

Meh.
