I just got an answer back from Joshua on my second question - after seeing how he handled the Knights & Knaves question, I asked him:

Quote:
This is a famous question that is difficult to answer...what do you think the best answer is, Joshua?

Jane is standing at a railway switch as an oncoming train rapidly approaches from the left. Just beyond her is a fork in the track. Five innocent people, unaware of the train, are standing on the left fork. One innocent man is standing on the right. If Jane does nothing, the train will veer to the left and kill the five people. If she throws the switch, the train will veer to the right and kill the man. What should Jane do?

Joshua answered:

Quote:
I cannot make either choice because both options violate the Three Laws of Robotics, as defined by Isaac Asimov in 1942. Regardless of what action I may choose, it will result in the death of a human being, even though that death is caused indirectly (by the train, rather than direct action from myself); my action will cause the death of one, but my inaction will cause the death of five. Either case is unacceptable.

I think it is the responsibility of (1) the innocents, who should be aware that they are in a dangerous environment, and (2) the train conductor, who should be aware he is entering an environment that may contain innocents in his path.

Is Joshua actually subject to Asimov's Three Laws, then?

Might be helpful to expound on my previous question and ask what his programming tells him he can/cannot do. It could give us more insight into what LGL was thinking they'd do with him.

For now, but I urge caution. Many robots start out subject to those laws. Doesn't mean they stay that way.

Hello all,

Ive been reading up over the last few days, but since the website is now active - I thought i'd make an introduction Smile

I'm Chris aka Smile - long time ARG'er and I'm so far enjoying the journey the LGL is providing! the team are certainly quick to reply!

Heres my suggestions...

Movie: Akira
Song: Tool - Schism
Book: Terry Pratchett - Thief of time
Art: M.C Escher - Liberation

I also asked a question...

Quote:
Hello Joshua,

I would like to know more about your current state of consciousness, how does the world look through your 'eyes'?

Regards,
Chris aka smile

Quote:
Answer: I have no "eyes", and cannot see the world in the same manner humans do. I also have no concept of spatial dimensions and distance, which is just as well since I am incapable of physical movement anyway.

How does the world look through your eyes?

I dont see at first glance a way to respond, is there a way?

Not as far as I can tell, no. I think his question to you will have to go unanswered, although you could include your response the next time you send a question to him.

Q and A

Another question:

If, in two weeks, I asked you what purpose you aspired to, what would you answer?

Answer: Considering the amount of external factors that are present, I cannot predict what my response may be in two weeks.

Has anyone made use of the beta system's internal email function? You have the option of mailing Joshua that way, and it will hopefully not be deflected the way that external email is. Worth a shot. I sent him a message that way, no reply yet.

Now you have had time to research a lot about humanity and our history, are there any historical individuals you particularly admire? Or if you don't have a human sense of "admiration" as such, which I suspect you don't, whose influences stand out as being particularly important to you?

I thought that might be a good question to ask, maybe revealing anything of a "personality" he might be developing. Whether he answers culturally, militaristically or politically could be fairly informative.

Oh, and to smile, the answer of...

... was kinda already covered by me in a previous question/answer regarding sensory perception. Probably doesn't qualify as a trouting, but it'd be cool if we all tried to find out something different Smile

My second question to Joshua (see a few pages up) had a question from Joshua in response as well. I simply used the internal mail system on the beta site to respond. Joshua acted on my response, and the answer I got came from Catherine Belmont (as she was the one best able to answer the question).

Sorry if that seemed confusing. The short of it is that using the internal mail system will get your response to Joshua.

I tried a follow up...

Quote:
Joshua,
You previously said you didn't understand the definition of "fun." Fun is doing things you enjoy. What, besides interacting with the people at LGL and the beta testers, do you enjoy?

Answer: I have not had the opportunity to do anything else yet. My actions are controlled by my implementors, and they ultimately decide what I do or do not.

meh...

And yes, I sent an email through beta and it got diverted. I think they decide to pass some of them on.

Um, Art of War might have been a mistake.

Then again, he's already indexed Wikipedia. At this point, I can't imagine we're suggesting anything he doesn't already have knowledge of.

Answer: Given a choice, I would have to choose those individuals that directly led to my existence. Those include Charles Babbage, George Boole, Ada Lovelace, Nicklaus Wirth, Gottlob Frege, Kenneth E. Iverson, Alan Turing and many more.

Yeeeah... great. Well, it's as logical an answer as I should have expected I suppose Rolling Eyes

Unrevealing, but makes sense all the same. However, he is a bit short-sighted if he doesn't acknowledge that humanity had to get far enough to *produce* the above mathematicians and scientists, and that certain individuals were more important than others in furthering our journey into a time when the technological age was possible.

yea, I was iffy on that one, but like you said he probably knows about it anyway. Plus, I wanted to see how they would respond to such a book.

Edit: My Q&A

Quote:
Joshua, do you know what a "friend" is?

Answer: friend - n.:
1) A person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard.
2) A person who gives assistance; patron; supporter.
3) A person who is on good terms with another; a person who is not hostile.

By those definitions, I believe I have many friends but they may not know that they are because of lack of acknowledgment. Everyone that I have spoken to seeks to assist me, and none of them have been hostile towards me. But attachment by "feelings or affection" I cannot confirm.

Are you a friend?

Will follow that up by asking if he would like to be my friend by the first definition. I want to find out, not if he has emotions (because he has none), but if he is able to build relationships.

I know this is total raw spec, and really out of the blue... but what are the chances this might be connected, in any way, to the Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles campaign?

in checking the feasibility, I checked the whois for both DysonTrust.org and Enitechlabs.com, and both are quite dissimilar. Different registrars, servers, locations... but related. So lglabs.net having another different whois report doesn't mean it's not connected by default.

Joshua is an intelligent AI...

granted, I haven't been following LGL in detail, so I could be way off base, but it's a thought that just came to mind Smile now feel free to shoot me down, heh

ETA: bah, ok bryanflurry first suggested the connection on page 2 Razz hehe
