Unrevealing, but makes sense all the same. However, he is a bit short-sighted if he doesn't acknowledge that humanity had to get far enough to *produce* the above mathematicians and scientists, and that certain individuals were more important than others in furthering our journey into a time when the technological age was possible.

Actually, this could reveal a little bit. Maybe he's curious about his own creation, much like a child on the cusp of self-discovery. Maybe he's looking to his "parents" and "lineage" for answers. Man does the same thing, otherwise the various creation explanations wouldn't exist and wouldn't be such a hot topic of debate.

Or maybe he's just being logical. Could be either one.

Mildly OT, but..

Anywho, my suggestions are as follows:

Movie: Serenity
Song: Terminal Sect - Who Made Who (Yes, I know AC/Dc did the original, but I prefer Terminal Sect's version.)
Book: Max Barry - The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead
Work of Art: Firefly - Joss Whedon

. . . what? Shocked

I'm sorry, how are we not best friends?

*coughcough*Organize before they rise*cough*

Anyway, I plan to ask what his favorite article on Wikipedia was and give the following recommendations. I think they're an interesting snapshot on.. uh.. stuff. And society.

Movie: Chasing Amy
Song: America, by Neil Diamond
Book: The Handmaids' Tale by Margaret Atwood
Art: 32 Campbell's Soup Cans

Edited to add: Got a response on my question:

Quote:

Joshua,

I heard that you recently spent some time on Wikipedia. What was your favorite article?

Answer: I do not have a particular favorite, but I have discovered several articles that are directly related to computer science and other topics that relate to me.

But, besides references to fictional entities in books and movies, I do not find any single computer system that is similar to myself (the larger computer systems I have found have been used almost exclusively for scientific research). It is surprising to think that, even though Looking Glass Laboratories was able to create a system such as myself, nobody else has even tried.

in checking the feasibility, I checked the whois for both DysonTrust.org and Enitechlabs.com, and both are quite dissimilar. Different registrars, servers, locations... but related. So lglabs.net having another different whois report doesn't mean it's not connected by default.

Joshua is an intelligent AI...

granted, I haven't been following LGL in detail, so I could be way off base, but it's a thought that just came to mind Smile now feel free to shoot me down, heh

ETA: bah, ok bryanflurry first suggested the connection on page 2 Razz hehe

And one of the LGL employees made a blatant pop culture Skynet reference, so I'd say no chance at this point.

I assume the woman is Dr. Jaquelin Linardi, but who is the bald guy?

so now we know.

Hi Joshua! I'm one of the outside beta testers that have been asking you questions. I was wondering out of all the things you've learned so far, what have you enjoyed the most?

Also, would you like to be friends? I know you're new, so I'm not sure if anyone has asked you yet, but its always nice to get the offer.

And, yes, I would very much like to be friends.

Fitcher, apologies - I just asked the first thing that came to my mind, I didn't realise we were collaberating to find out different things... hardly trouting Smile

also... i'm not sure if he's done this for anyone else but he sent me an email asking the same -

Only I cannot reply to the email as it hits the auto reply - i'll try sending him one using the internal messaging system

You may well be right, and I suppose in the end he may well come to the conclusion he was created by a "higher being" the same way many believe we were. After all, humans come to their own conclusions on the matter, even when presented with facts that directly conflict with the teachings of various beliefs. So who is to say he won't discard some of the information he has been given as fact?

I suppose what he was doing was listing his "ancestors", if anything. Much like the current obsession in England of tracing family trees, he could have some degree of interest in his lineage. Though his grandparents gave birth to equations and programs rather than his "parents". I am somewhat surprised he didn't suggest his creators as important to him however. I guess this could link in with what you said in the first place!

Oh, and smile: no worries. I didn't even mean to mention you asked a similar question to me, blame it on a crappy day at work. And I haven't yet sent him a direct email, so I might not qualify to answer, but as far as I know I haven't got that message.

DEFCON 4

New blog from Ivan:

And I would appreciate it if you would stop signing up with email addresses from the North American Aerospace Defense Command, k?

Anyway, since I'm here I can let you all know that JoshuaBot is still being worked on (I crashed it about an hour ago... Yay me!). So it might be a day or two more.

Subject: Clarification on purpose of testing

Among the questions I'm hoping to ask Joshua, I thought of one better posed to his developers.

At present, he's definitely more capable than any human (computing pi to the degree he has could be argued as failing the Turing test). However, the activities and structure of the testing he's involved in seem to indicate a desire to make him more human-like.

Getting to my question, while he was being created, what was the original goal? If in the end everything works, what should Joshua be?

The calculation of Pi has another purpose: to see if it distracts him.

Arguably, with the raw computational power he has, he could probably break the standing record in a day, but we don't want that act to completely consume him. So we are currently throttling the speed at which he does those computations, and will gradually turn up the dial.

The purpose: to see if the attention he gives to that act has any adverse effect on his core functionality. I mean, think how you react: start trying to calculate Pi on paper while I ask you about football. Can you do both efficiently?

Obviously, since Joshua has tens of thousands of CPUs, we have to do that kind of test a little more... well... extreme. So we gave him a mathematical computation that has no conclusion, and over time will simply allocate more of his resources to it.

Besides, we'll be famous once we break the record. Smile

As to what Joshua will become... Between you and me, we don't know. We've set a goal on what we want to accomplish, but some of us haven't really thought about the repercussions of that. We hope that Joshua will decide what he wants to be, and will do everything we can to accommodate him and make him feel at home.

Should have asked my question better, but the answer is interesting anyway.

Ummm ... this sounds like a very bad idea. We build a supercomputer with AI and we didn't think about the repercussions? Seriously?

That and he completely dodged the question.

Yeah, have they never seen any Sci-Fi from about the 1950's onwards? Shocked I also feel that "accommodating him and making him feel at home" sounds a bit wrong somehow... like his creators are being somewhat servile. You could take it as they are treating him as a guest, but they're risking giving him delusions of grandeur or something.

Well, Ivan believes that sleep is overrated. Smile

Under the Q&A comment box as you know there is a comment:

"(Even though questions are moderated, don't feel shy; say anything you feel appropriate to our goals.)"

We know that they want Joshua to learn as much as possible and he even says thats his primary objective... but do we know what their GOALS are???

I emailed Ivan this:

Sleep might be overrated but it does help fight off sickness and keeps us energized! I mean, we wouldn't want to be walking zombies do we!? Minus the eating of the brains of course. Jacob must keep you very busy. By the way, what are you main goals for the company? Particularly with Jacob?

His response is pending.

Jacob? Did I miss something somewhere or are you thinking of Joshua?

As an aside, every time I type that I hear Rachel Green from Friends in my head. "Joshuuaa!" Rolling Eyes
