*laugh* I used to, yah. Razz I'm currently watching Jericho and am obsessed with Firefly and Veronica Mars. Hopefully that's somewhat redeeming.

Hey Ivan,

Sorry for the informal intro, but you somehow seem the least formal of the team... no offence meant by any means!

Anyway, to the purpose of this email. I'm going to risk offending you again (Twice in one email?) but you look like you might be a fan of Science Fiction, same as me. I just wanted to know what it felt like to be working on a project that could hardly have been imagined only a few years ago, but is now a reality? Must be pretty mind-blowing!

I'll let you get back to work now... looking forward to seeing what's in store with JoshuaBot. Don't break him too hard now.

I sent that earlier on, just to see if he would acknowledge the fact that by past fictitious accounts, he could easily be endangering his life. Nay, almost certainly Smile

His response:

I use to think that they were pulling my chain and hiding a midget with a keyboard in one of the racks. I mean, computers just don't TALK like this, do they?

But in SciFi the machine's always evil. Be it HAL, or SkyNet, or The Matrix... it always had bad intentions. That's what's so cool about Josh; he wouldn't hurt a fly. They've taken measures to prevent that from being a possibility.

All things considered, I'm hoping they invent food replicators next...

Well, he seems pretty confident ol' Joshy isn't going to go haywire. But then that's what they all say...

I've posed a follow-up question to that, mentioning along the lines that if they want him to develop naturally, who is to say he won't decide to be evil of his own free will? There surely can't be a "don't do any evil" command protocol... ?

Subject: Hi

Hi Joshua! I'm one of the outside beta testers that have been asking you questions. I was wondering out of all the things you've learned so far, what have you enjoyed the most?

Also, would you like to be friends? I know you're new, so I'm not sure if anyone has asked you yet, but its always nice to get the offer.

I have learned a lot in the past few days, but I do not enjoy any single thing more than any other. I enjoy the act of learning, not the material, so to speak.

And, yes, I would very much like to be friends.

I have a new friend! I have a new friend!

Damn, you completely stole my idea. I already asked him if he knew what "friends" are and then I was to follow that up with "Will you be my friend?" Its posted on page 15

Just got my Beta-tester approval email. I asked Joshua "Is beauty truth?"

And I recommended:

Movie -- The Passion of the Christ
Song -- The Wall by Pink Floyd
Book -- don't remember what I put here Embarassed
Art -- Saturn Devouring His Children by Goya

heres my questions:

What is the answer to life, the universe, and everything?

Joshua wrote:
Answer: I do not know the answer to everything. Where would I be able to get the answer to that question, or perhaps sufficient reference material in order to make my own determination?

me wrote:
What is the greatest film of all time? as in the most common highest rated film through all databases.

Joshua wrote:
Answer: Although there does not seem to be a definitive answer as to which film is "greatest" (the definition of "great" is a highly subjective term, and varies from individual to individual), after analyzing data from numerous sources (most notably, the American Film Institute) it appears that the most generally accepted "greatest" film is "Citizen Kane", a film directed by Orson Welles in 1941.

I have not seen "Citizen Kane", so I cannot formulate an opinion over its "greatness". I would like to see that movie eventually, but that is up to my implementors.

Benjamin's finishing up at his conference in Central Florida, so since he was going to be up there he had a crazy idea of doing an "in the field" test of sorts, using terminals set up somewhere and pulling people off the street, having them talk to Joshua directly but don't tell them about Joshua. Make them think they're testing a chat room or something.

Don't know how to feel about that, but I get to go to Daytona Beach during spring break. Frankly, I think *that's* the reason for this; I'm sure he'll drag me to a wet t-shirt contest somewhere, but after all he's the boss... I'm not one to complain...

Normally I'd send Gordon, but no. Gonna take one for the team and go myself. The sacrifices I must make for progress.

He hasn't told me where or when, but I'm heading out in the morning, and will probably be back the same day. Only a couple of hours after all.

New blog from Russell Travers. Is it me, or is he tempting fate by saying he'll only be gone a couple of hours? Also, this is the first we've really heard about Dr. Benjamin Falken, head of Research and Development. I guess the reason he's not blogging etc. is that he's out and about. Still, you'd think he might have a laptop Smile

I don't think I've done this enough... I would like to thank everyone for the positive feedback we've been getting regarding Joshua. You all seem to like him, and it seems he likes you too.

Joshua is quite curious, but that can be expected. He reminds me of my niece, who in her youth would not stop asking questions. I can no longer use the internal instant messenger because he's been given access to it; as much as I would like to talk, I still have a company to run.

Benjamin's been talking a lot to him remotely (we provided a special VPN tunnel for him while he's on the road), and he will continue to have sessions with Joshua when he gets back in town on Monday. He's much more of a conversationalist than I am anyway, so that should be good for all parties involved.

All things considered, I'm sure that my father would be proud of the group's accomplishment. And there's much more to come.

Once again, thank you for helping us make this dream a reality.

3/7/2008 18:00 I think you would enjoy the game of Poker. It is a Card game. I am specifically referring to No-Limit Texas Hold'em. You can learn a lot about the human Psyche from Poker players, and how they react to the game.

I have 2 questions. I know that isn't protocol, but they go together.

You say "My primary objective right now is to learn as much as possible, both through user interaction and through third party input.".
The question is... To what end? Why is that your "Primary Objective"?
If you learn everything there is to know, then what?

Thank you,
-Jon

Answer: I have been designed to learn; all other actions are secondary and, to some degree, further the primary objective of core learning.

My implementors have told me "there's always something new to learn." Until proven otherwise, I have to accept that statement, because the alternative is difficult to consider.

3/7/2008 05:37 Hello Joshua. I am Jon. It is very nice to meet you.

Would you like to play a Game?

Answer: I do not know of many games. Dr. Linardi has taught me Go and Scrabble, and I play chess frequently with Gordon, but I have yet to experience any other games.

Is beauty really truth?

Answer: You are referring to the quote by John Keats: "Beauty is truth, truth beauty. That is all ye know on Earth, and all ye need to know."

I do not understand the statement to begin with. "Beauty" is a relative term, and every entity would have their own definition on beauty based on their own opinions. Truth is truth; it is the same for every entity, and is unwavering.

There can be no quantitative comparison or equality between the two.

So Joshua has read Wikipedia enough to recognize Keats.
