[TRAILHEAD] Amy Greenford

New Friend Request on MySpace this afternoon.

Amy. http://www.myspace.com/findthebride
Open up the page (because the avatar looked interesting) and found this:
Quote:
Hello,

Amy here - you either know me or are a friend of a friend, who thought that you could help me. I witnessed something very strange and I need your help to find out what is going on. Please visit my blog http://amygreenford.blogspot.com for more information and, if you can, distribute the e-flyer, in the pictures bit, to anybody else who might be able to help.

Thank you.

How odd. There are 3 videos on Youtube, all very sketchy.

I don't get what we're supposted to follow up on, even after having perused the blog. I'll pop her an email and see if I get any reply.

I look at these characters, and I immediately think of Tim Burton's Corpse Bride.

books

I was wondering if the book she selected in the classic section between E-F may have brought the characters to life? I sent her an email about it.

I do live in the UK, but London is about 300 miles away. Anyone closer?

For those looking for some culture, take a look at this. The first 30 seconds are fairly low quality, but it then improves and is strangely compelling, even for a non-opera fan.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zF4Xe_f4bI&NR=1

Dido's Lament was from the opera Dido and Aeneas written by Henry Purcell. It is based on a story from the fourth book of Virgil's Aeneid, of the legendary Queen of Carthage Dido and the Trojan refugee Aeneas. When Aeneas and his crew are shipwrecked in Carthage, he and the queen fall in love. However, Aeneas must soon leave to found Rome. Dido cannot live without him and awaits death. {Wikipedia}

Also, from the last blog post, I thought it might be useful to make a list of the characters in Wuthering Heights. The struck out ones are the ones that have been removed from the book that Amy found in the bookshop.

Catherine
Heathcliff
Edgar Linton
Nelly Dean
Lockwood
Hareton Earnshaw
Cathy
Hindley Earnshaw
Linton Heathcliff
Isabella Linton
Mr. Earnshaw
Mrs. Earnshaw
Joseph
Frances Earnshaw
Mr. Linton
Mrs. Linton
Zillah
Mr. Green

For more background on these characters this link might be useful:

http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/wuthering/characters.html

This does remind me a little of a book I read by Jasper Fforde where the characters from Wuthering Heights came to life, and travelled from the book into the real world. I wonder if this might coincide with the release of Fforde's next book in July.

Stingray, I too was wondering about it being something to do with the Thursday Next books - there are various connections and similarities. Though if it was a Ffordian enterprise, I'd expect it to have happened in Swindon. Or maybe Reading, which would have been easier for me as it's only 20 minutes or so away!

I might be able to get up to London next weekend, unless anyone else goes sooner. Of course, it'll depend on whether this bride is found before then.

Oh, and I got an email last night (though I only read it this morning) about this thing, which reads the same as Kona's MySpace friend request, and had the flyer attached.

That is exactly what I was thinking! Laughing

I'm glad to find some Fforde ffans. Smile

Cathy (from Wuthering Heights) would certainly class to me as a disgruntled bride. Not sure Heathcliffe wore shorts though! Laughing

The lovely Mr Fforde is doing an appearance at Foyles on July 9th for the launch of First Among Sequels. Could be a coincidence.

I'm not at all sure about that though. There are lots of things that don't really fit, and not that many things that do suggest a Nextian puzzle.

I've already mentioned that I'd expect it to be in Swindon (where the books are set) - certainly other Fforde events have taken place there, such as the Fforde Ffestival in 2005.

Although Jasper Fforde books would indeed be filed under E-F, I don't think they're usually under "Classics" (sorry, Mr Fforde!), though I do know that different shops file him under all sorts of different categories, so it's possible.

I'm not terribly well up on my Dickens and Bronte novels, but I thought it was Miss Havisham who was wearing the weddingy outfit, not Cathy. As has been mentioned, I don't think Heathcliffe would be wearing shorts, though in the Nextian world anything's possible. The blurbs I've read about First Among Sequels make no mention of any of those characters anyway.

I wondered if it might be something set up by Foyles to publicise the appearance on the 9th (rather than by Fforde for the book coming out), but the website says it's sold out, so that wouldn't make sense.

The blanks in the copy of Wuthering Heights kind of make sense, but only because the book would be rewriting itself. Once that was done, the text would be there, just different from before.

I have no idea why Dido's Lament by Purcell would feature in this at all. Certainly I don't recall anything relevant being mentioned in any of the other Next books.

Oh, and someone has left a comment on the blog that the Wuthering Heights had gone yesterday. I don't know why Amy hasn't posted anything at all for a week - maybe she's disappeared, or just got nothing new to say (though that didn't seem to stop her before).

Sorry, this is all a bit of a jumble of ramblings. Just wanted to get the things out of my head and see what other people thought! Of course, if I do go up to London to investigate at the weekend, I'll make sure I wear my Spec-Ops t-shirt, just in case Laughing

One thing that's been bugging me as I read her blog is the post from Sunday, June 10. I know it's most likely nothing (especially since it's the blog containing the sketches she also has on her MySpace page), but the writing on that one strikes me as very out of character.

Quote:
The time for action is nigh. The avenues of enquiry are expanding. Feelers are flying out to find the elusive bride and her errant groom.

If you see below, I've attached the flyer that will be circulating the internet, libraries, cafes and bookshops.

Yeah yeah, I know - sketches. But you get the gist - the pair of them really are in possession of an alluringly peculiar demeanor. (I do actually think I've captured an essence that's not a far cry from the real deal.)

Please can you forward to anyone you know.

Thanks,

Amy

Not only is she much more formal than usual, but she even signs the blog with Thanks, Amy, which she hasn't done before, and didn't do again.
