Another thing I noticed today: on Joseph Capablanca's Facebook profile, it says he was born January 1st, 1930. There may be some significance to that date for Capablanca which helps to solve our current roadblock. It could also be the default birth date that Facebook assigns. Smile

I don't know if it's the default, as Facebook asks you to put in your DOB when you register, with years ranging from 1900-2008.

The Hastings International Chess Congress was held at the turn of the year. In 1929-30, Capablanca won. I haven't yet found anything about that particular tournament. In 1930-31, Capablanca posted the same score but came in second to Max Euwe, and his only loss came to Mir Sultan Khan (neither name is correct for "the opponent").

I'll continue to look and see if I can find out who Capablanca was playing on 1/1/1930.

Thank you Smile

The only things sent in the emails were the 2nd monkey picture and the URL. No poems or anything this time.

In light of the Capablanca monkeys, I went back and looked at Alex's pictures from the Flickr site. If those pictures are encoded the same way that the monkeys are, I didn't find it, but that could be simply because Flickr may re-encode those pictures. As Flickr offers the ability to download in a number of sizes, I don't know if we can get access to the "original" pictures unless someone can e-mail them to us.

By the way, it does appear that these photos were taken with an HP digital camera. If that's the case, somehow I doubt that they were 320x240.

I don't believe Flickr re-encodes the image; if they do, they keep the image at high enough quality so no loss is noticeable.

META:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
They could be made to *simulate* being taken with a camera phone or low resolution device, but in the "real world" that might not be the case. You can't go based on what the metadata might say as being "in game"; after all, these are college students and might not have access to a camera phone to begin with (I currently don't), so they use the resources they have to give a different impression.

I had a look at those when they first went live. At the time they reminded me of the corrupt images used in I Love Bees. These however don't have anything in them. I believe they were created to look like the latest monkey image. In fact, the images have embedded thumbnails in them that look corrupted as well, which a truly corrupt image would not have. The clencher is the images with the corruption oriented vertically. This doesn't happen when corrupting an image with text. The corruption starts at one point in the image and continues row-by-row from there to the end of the image (for JPEGs at least).

A PM around here was talking about Flickr. Said he's using Flickr for that reason, because it doesn't mess with the image, unlike MySpace which re-encodes everything.

No progress cracking the new puzzle, btw. As a reminder, if you think you have a possible solution, try entering it as part of the URL path, similar to how the previous puzzle was solved.

Nighthawk:

The point I was trying to make was that if something had been encoded in the originals, we did not have access to it at this time.

However, point taken about the metadata. I apologize to anyone who may have been inadvertently affected by my comments, and I will be aware of this in the future.

lol - I read your post-game writeup about a month ago. When you mentioned Flickr, I thought, "I remember someone talkin' about that..." Wink

Well, I haven't noticed any further updates, no new emails, no changes to Facebook. I've tried a dozen more passwords, but nothing clicks. I'm pretty sure Robert and Stephanie have been tracked down and killed by this point. If not, they're remaining awfully quiet.

This silence feels familiar somehow....

New Code Monkey email:

If you follow the numbers and take the 9th, 10th, 15th, 50th, etc. characters from the above message, it forms:

they are onto me

[spec] Is Code Monkey (aka Capablanca) our good friend Alex? The hidden message in the email almost sounds like a distress call... Although, that inconvenient corpse kind of throws that off. Stunt double, maybe? Wink [/spec]

There's another monkey image attached to the email as well, but this one doesn't appear to contain any hidden text (possibly stegged?):

Nice. I'll have a shirt for him tomorrow Smile I was hoping it was a code to put in the opponent box, but no such luck.

Should emails contain everyone elses email address?.....not sure I like that too much.

I noticed that, too. Note to PMs: please send emails using the BCC field so that our email addresses don't get spammed everywhere. Thanks!
