ARGs in 2008 What do you want to see? Well, it's about 6 hours before 2008 (by my clock, anyway). I'm leeching Wi-Fi from the ski lodge and the scary security person is glaring at me, so I'll make this brief.
What would you like to see from ARGs in 2008?
Me? I'd like to see another self-supporting ARG along the lines of Perplex City. Specifically, I'm hoping to see it from Eldritch Errors.
I'd also like to see an ARG that makes good use of podcasting, something which I am enamored with. I want to see a podcast be a major part of the story, not just a one-time deal with a story-so-far.
Finally, I'd like to see a higher rate of successful ARGs. 2007 saw a lot of great ARGs, but it also saw a lot of implosions. I'd like to see more prepared PMs and less imploding games in '08.
So, how about you guys?

I am too, and not just because of Eldritch. I have high hopes from Fourth Wall too, same with Smith & Tinker. I'm hoping tonight there are teams of people clinking glass wishing themselves luck with a grassroots or independent ARG project next year.
This New Years Eve, I'm wishing for a long, ugly, protacted Writers Guild strike because it might be the best thing that ever happened to entertainment (especially if my striking and supporting friends come play at being independents on the Web for a while as a result.)

/me clinks glasses with other developers trying to do the same
It's a boggling process to create a self-supporting game or something with the resemblence of one
fear not though - there are efforts out there

Fun rabbithole.
Engaging story.
Credible characters.
Puzzles that involve community cooperation (not competition).
Surprises in the mailbox or that sqeeeee of glee when something new pops up unexpectedly.
Fun phone calls.
Mysterious faxes.
Reward for pressing the button (wait, isn't that the Skinner box or something psychological like that).

Variable and intermittant rewards -- especially at random and infrequent intervals -- are better than a consistent response. Eventually I just stop pressing buttons when I already know exactly how they will respond, no matter how big or important the reward. Compare this to Chain Factor, when playing a lengthy game may or may NOT end with that "reward" of an error message, and many times the message that did come up had already been found and reported. This only makes it even MORE compelling to play yet another round, because maybe THIS time i'll get a new message.

Very good point! Intermittant and variable, unpredictable rewards.

I would agree that credible characters and swag out the ying-yang are the top two for me.
Mo' bigger and mo' better live events would be great as well. Especially if I can get to them.
But after the failure of Cloverfield to do so, I also require that at least one ARG (or ARG-like experience) incorporate a lion.
A huge lion.

well... I've been looking at incorporating lions, but I can only afford a tiny one - I'm sorry

I would like an ARG that I find early enough to actually know what is going on.
For once.

It might be best to post in the PM help section under the interaction thread.
That'll prolly heighten your chances of getting a launch email/text/myspace mesage/whatever else there is.
