I read about this earlier this afternoon in a German online magazine as well. Extremely interesting. I envy the scientists who have the chance to examine this thing!

Cool! I'm down for podcasting, if anyone wants to help. Smile

I'm in! I'm gonna be a bit busy working on another ultra cool endgame project, but I've a lot a free time on my hands lately and the extra work will be refreshing.

seems to me the agonothetai could have influenced the re-emergence of this device in the 14th century... Anyway, any theories we should explore in the podcast? Maybe we could ask Eli if he has any contacts at this facility in Cardiff to see if he could get any more information. If he found it interesting enough to comment on then it must be something he finds of enough importance to research.

Heh, that will definitely be lots of fun (making an Eli podcast).

I'll let Cineball do it, unless he'd like my help, but here's my two cents:

"...but did this ancient computer have a different role altogether? I am NOT Eli Hunt, and this is the story of the lost antikythera device with [yournamehere]."

I think it should be a collaboration like the [META] DVD. I'm more than happy to work on it with others, we just need to do our homework and quickly. I think it'd be great if someone could put together some theories and we could put some images with the podcast like Eli does.

Regarding the theories, we could say that the antikythera is the first omphaputer ever made... (Quickly destroyed next by Theodosius, of course)

I'll make a Google document so we can all edit the text together. PM me your gmail address and I'll add you in!

How's this for the intro?

(It's definitely an early version and I didn't bother editing out my mistakes and weird pronunciations of some things.)

Is it just me, or is there a weird bit at the end of Ariadne's post?

People have also built :

(Even now I'm astonished by the level of craftsmanship that goes into creating a device like that...it just blows my mind to think of it having happened two thousand or more years ago.)

Is there an image or something after that partial line that I'm missing?

Heh, yes... my message was:

There are several replications and interpretations of the mechanical movement, based on the '59 research and now adapted to allow for the more modern discoveries: http://www.etl.uom.gr/mr/index.php?mypage=antikythera_ani_new

People have also built functioning versions: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/08/NAMA_Machine_d'Anticyth%C3%A8re_5.jpg

(Even now I'm astonished by the level of craftsmanship that goes into creating a device like that...it just blows my mind to think of it having happened two thousand or more years ago.)

And there are also renderings of the Olympiad dial: http://www.antikythera-mechanism.gr/system/files/images/Olympiad_Dial.jpg
