Using rogi's calculator and googlemaps,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I'm getting +16° 23' 59.00", +99° 54' 55.00"
seems to be the middle of a field in Thailand, near a road

Yeah, I got that too...Tried a few of the towns, but no hits yet. Weird, because it looks to be in the middle of nowhere. do they really expect a player to be in Thailand? Or maybe Mei Hui can go?

We do have a couple of places where error might be introduced.

The omphalos location is not exact. We're taking GoogleMaps' perception of the center of the named location.

We're measuring stadia at 185m. Wikipedia gives various conversions of 157-193m (article)

But it should still be in the general vacinity, no? How far off have the old hits been? D'you think it might be as far off as Myanmar?

I've tried every town of over 100,000 people in Thailand from this link:
http://www.mongabay.com/igapo/Thailand.htm

and got no hits...

I wish we could get a locus projected onto GoogleMaps. Start with one the diameter of our omphalos town. Then larger rings for varying stadia sizes.

This distance is 5499 stadia, we could be as short as 154km closer to Lunglei or 44km further out.

Town names that are more than one word might require a "/" or a "-" instead of a space. I believe that we have concluded that spaces are interpreted as strong breaks by the Omphaloputer.
How many transliteration systems are there for Thai?

Looks like it originally said
Navigate 5499 Capricorn 14 degrees
now it says
47487 Hestia 14 degrees.

and Hestia == Capricorn so the direction is the same (almost due South East from Lunglei), just the distance is over 8 times the original.

when did the code change? I have had to refresh the page before the new distance came up. In the meantime I tried so many Thai cities with all those difficult spellings. The new city is so much easier Smile

The distance changed about 2:20 EDT - about 30 minutes ago.
We are guessing that whoever wrote this omphalos mistakenly used miles instead of stadion, and then corrected it but used 185 meters per stadion (instead of 190).

I'm struggling with that in the Omthalos Calculator, currently.
If you view it in IE, there's a GPS Visualizer dynamic link that draws a stadia-sized ring around the starting omthalos.

I need to find a way to make it not "lock-in" on Stephenville @ 3788.43km.
And if anyone can come up with a better way to dynamically create the link itself, Firefox might start showing the link, too.

The link to do it manually is at the bottom of this page:

In just playing around with the values, 189 stadia/km seems to get closest to the mark once we know the destination.

If anybody wants to test that, just enter the km from your conversion in the "Distance (km)" box and hit "calculate destination", again.
The "Distance (km)" conversion is based on 185 stadia/km (because that's what everybody more or less agreed to, at the point I was building it.
