Where is the King George V statue located? Does it have a plinth with a shield-shaped ornament as shown in the drawing? If it does, I think you may have nailed it. The pose seems to fit the one in the drawing.

at the queensway tunnel...small issue though Here you can read about it...and that the tunnel was built in 1934 and that the the plans didn't even originally call for statues (there's one of queen mary)...theres that and the fact i don't any stand or whatever it may be called that the statue sits on.

close but no dice...

Nope, unfortunately, the KGV (almost typed KGB :S lol) statue doesn't have a full plinth nor a crest, and lol, unfortunately, the RtB statue is incorrect as well (check out the base of the picture; there's a second, thin platform at the very bottom that RtB doesn't have).

The search is still on.

I don't think so:

1) He's not kneeling

2) He's not on a tall pedestal

3) The pedestal doesn't have a lamp on one side

Guys, I blew up the picture of the statue really big and picked out a couple of details that I think might help us nail the statue - 'cos so far, I've been having NO luck.

HEAD (this makes me think we should be looking for a statue of a QUEEN)

BASE (what's going on here? two paths meeting? or what?)

Forgive me, but this totally deserves the double post.

I FOUND THE "BEACH"/"SHORELINE".

No, seriously.

It's the Gulf of Corinth, looking out from Delphi.

Yes, for real.

Compare.

Here's a picture.

Here's the drawing.

The picture I found isn't the right angle, but you can see details included in the drawing in the photo - the mountains at the back, the white hill-thing at the valley floor, etc.

Unfortunately, this means we have to widen our search for the statue. The Gulf of Corinth is not in Athens, obviously.

About our statue- I keep wondering if it really is wearing a crown or if those are birds perched on the statue's head. I think the detail at the bottom shows a brick paved area, or a tiled roof. I've viewed a lot of interesting sculpture in the search, but that plinth is something else. Doesn't it look sort of undercut in the middle- or like a slightly bigger block is sitting on the bottom block?

I don't know if I buy Delphi for our pile of rocks. But I'm looking at it at 5:30 am without my glasses and haven't finished my coffee yet.

The statue looks to me like it's a statue of a king, and is on a base in the middle of a paved/cobbled area (maybe a town/village centre). It looks fairly British to me, but then I'm not an expert of statues elsewhere.

When I first saw the drawing, it made me think of the King Alfred statue in Wantage, but I've since found pictures of that one, and it's not our one.

Oh, and I did have a look through Flickr at photos tagged "London" and "statue", just out of a faint hope it might appear in there, but didn't find anything similar.

Two things that might help other people:

Here is a link ot the Public Monument and Sculpture Association . I scanned London for Statue, but no hit. So London might be wrong.

One picture of King Louis (St. Louis) did have at least a similar crown and St. Louis is also on the list of olympic cities. Perhaps there is such a statue. But I have had no luck in finding one Sad

And I am not so sure about the Delphi Drawing.

Another (gorgeous) coast possibility:

Zante, Greece.

Looks like the top left part of the coast drawing.

I think I may have found your statue. I'm unsure of the posting protocol, but here is a link. Also I don't know how to get the image to show up in my posy Sad sorry. But I really think this is it.

Hope it helps

Wowow! Way to go -- I don't know how you found that, but I am very glad you did!!

This picture shows the base and the surroundings.. I guess some of those posters and stuff weren't there in 1918 Smile

Thanks , I'm just very pleased I could help out. I've been watching on the sidelines for a week or so and have been dieing to do something!

I think that the bio of King Dinas is rather significant. He was a peace and justice loving king, and I have to admit that that's what I think the olympics are really about, building bridges of understanding between "worlds", and perhaps that is what is behind this whole thing.
