Look familiar? Smile

Differs slightly... That's an original print, signed in 1887. So we are looking for some seriously old book here.

Yeah, I caught that as well. The pic we were sent is is from Ludgate/Broadway hill, which AFAIK is in London. The 1887 image you found is from the property at 9 Lafayette place, where Routledge moved in 1881. I don't think this info really helps, but it's what I found.

How they allow a book from 1900 to be checked out is beyond me.

My HIGH SCHOOL use to have a New York phone book from 1902 on the shelf. If you want Rockefeller and Carnegie's phone numbers, let me know. Wink

Old phonebooks are a dime a dozen. At the local archives here there are so many they fall off the shelves. They could probably give 'em away and still have more than they need.

As for how the 1900 edition was checked out... well, it probably wasn't checked out to the general patronage. Research institutions generally have their own patron types, it may have gone out to a professor or archivist, etc.

Apparently he really wants us to use that version. What year is it?

The website shows it somewhere near 1910 or 1905.

Information.

The japanese family photo that was obtained has a man highlighted in the back. He is of standing military rank in the Imperial Japanese Armed Forces. From the grainy picture I cannot tell what branch he serves under, but upon cursory searching, I've found two possible matches to his identity:

One is that he is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiroyasu_Fushimi
HIH Fleet Admiral Prince Fushimi Hiroyasu (伏見宮博恭王, Fushimi-no-miya Hiroyasu Shinnō ?, 16 October 1875 - 16 August 1946) was a scion of the Japanese imperial family and was a career naval officer who served as chief of staff of the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1932 to 1941.

Another is the Emperor himself, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hirohito

The problem arises is that the officer pictured (and highlighted) does not bear the proper ranking, insignias, and/or markings of a royal officer in the armed forces of the time. A likely guess is that he is not of royalty and/or not of military rank similar to the current Army Chiefs of Staff of the USA.

A search on naval admirals during WWII brought up this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raizo_Tanaka
Raizō Tanaka (田中 頼三, Tanaka Raizō?, 27 April 1892 - 9 July 1969) was an admiral in the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. A torpedo specialist, he mainly commanded destroyer units and was a primary leader of the "Tokyo Express" reinforcement and resupply convoys during the Guadalcanal campaign. In this capacity he was the victor in the Battle of Tassafaronga in which he defeated a much larger force of United States Navy cruisers and destroyers.

Still, the markings do not match any standard IJN markings of ranking officers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army_ranks_of_the_Japanese_Empire_during_World_War_II
It appears that the officer is an Army (Lt)General, as color contrast/brightness adjustment of the collar area reveals 2-3 star-like dots.

Unfortunately, none of the wikipedia pictures of WWII IJA officers match the pictured officer's uniform, unless the pictured uniform is a special ceremony uniform not usually seen by people/pictured as often. It is likely the uniform design is pre-WWII.

Another facial match could be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masakazu_Kawabe

If the picture's source can be located with proper reference material, it could open up another clue as to its connection to the supposed secret japanese organization.

hey guys, haven't played any for a while, just read this entire thread, looks interesting so I'm in.

Haven't got any copies of JTTCOTE here, I'm sure my grandad will have it however he collects books like crazy. It will probably be an old edition too so if no1 finds it soon I will go see. I'm in the UK too so fingers crossed.

Also where did the whole whaling thing come from? Like I said just read through it all but somehow missed how the seemingly unrelated topic started? Did Mary link to it somehow did she say why? It does seem to be important however with even the advert link to cooking whale meat :S

Maybe Japan destroyed a sub claiming they thought it was a whale I dunno. It's all kinda random, very interesting Very Happy

This PM must really have it out for me, as I am getting stonewalled on all fronts for emails.

I hope he is just saving something good for that brochure that is supposed to come...

The whaling idea came from the video of the Sea Shepherd harrassing/being harrased by a Japanese whaling vessel. Japanese coast guard was onboard the vessel and threw flash bangs or something at the Sea Shepherd vessell "Steve Irwin".
