Actually, if you look at many of Godzilla's movies that have him fight other Daikaiju, Godzilla has always been rooted for at the good guy by the actors and actresses that run around in the movie's sub-plot. They even give Godzilla a child 'son of Godzilla,' which just wreaks of goodness. Only in the movies where Godzilla is solo does he play the villain.

In the first 2 Godzilla 'Gojira' movies he was a villain, in the 3rd 'Gojira' movie- he made the transition to Protagonist.

Holy shit, it's been forever since I've been here and nothing has happened.

Anyway, as our resident Godzilla specialist, I have to say that, although you try to sound like you know what you're talking about, you are incorrect (no offense). The original Godzilla movie had him as just an animal, neither intrinsically good or bad, but definitely a serious threat, just as MGP seems to have been. Godzilla Raids Again (#2) continued with this, but in the relatively long span of time until King Kong vs. Godzilla (#3), the filmakers realized that monsters were incredibly popular among children (especially Japanese children, I guess), so, starting there, they started injecting some (unwelcome) humor into the movies, to appeal more toward kids. However, Godzilla remained a general villain until Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (#5), where it was "established" that Godzilla only hates humans because they hate him.

From there, Godzilla was still regarded as just a big animal, but he tended to end up (unintentionally) helping humanity (Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster (#7) fits in here, "anonimous," if that is your real name...or even if it isn't, I guess...). It wasn't until Godzilla's Revenge (#10, where all the monsters only appear in a kid's daydreams, which shows how the series was becoming far less serious and far more kid-oriented) that Godzilla became a general "good guy." From there he actually became a superhero (he didn't wear a costume though Smile ). Toward the end of the first series, they tried to take him back to his roots a little, but (unintentionally) stopped making new Godzilla movies (they literally just never got around to it).

The second and third series do take Godzilla back to just a threatening animal (with the exception of Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah, Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, #25, the only one where Godzilla is actively trying to destroy Japan, and also the one with the longest title).

For the record, when you see a Godzilla movie and you think it is funny, chances are it really is supposed to be. Many of the movies (the worst ones, in general) tried to enhance their appeal to children by being funny, as I said earlier (think the infamous flying scene from Godzilla vs. Hedorah (aka the Smog Monster) and the "drop kick scene" from Godzilla vs. Megalon, one of the worst movies ever made, but somehow the most popular one stateside).

One last thing: If you actually read all that shit, here's a
Brownie
Actually, let's make that a dozen.
Brownie Brownie Brownie Brownie Brownie Brownie Brownie Brownie Brownie Brownie Brownie
You deserve it, motherfucker.
