Mephisto awaits your first move.

I managed to get in a lengthy session with Reggie. Notably, Reggie is now playing the black side of the board. My strategy here was not to win, but to draw out his moves. Here's the game:

[Date "2003.09.28"]
[White "cljones23"]
[Black "Mephisto/Reggie"]
[Result "*"]

1. Nf3 Nf6 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. e4 d5 4. d4 Bg4 5. Bb5 Bxf3 6. gxf3 e6 7. O-O Rc8 8. a4 Bb4 9. Qd2 Ba3 10. h3 O-O 11. Qd3 Na5 12. h4 b6 13. f4 Rb8 14. f3 Re8 15. Re1 Re7 16. Ba6 *

Mephisto teaches Heather how to play Chess on 9/28

I told Mephisto that I don't really know how to play chess.

xover222 (3:44:56 PM): Everyone's given up. Hmmmmmmm.
konamouse (3:45:06 PM): hi, is this mephisto??
xover222 (3:45:18 PM): No this is Mephisto.
konamouse (3:45:39 PM): oh, sorry, i sometimes forget the capital letters.
xover222 (3:46:18 PM): Everyone is off watching that brutish NFL I'll wager.
konamouse (3:46:26 PM): not me, i'm playing poker.
xover222 (3:46:36 PM): I'm not surprised.
xover222 (3:46:48 PM): Should be working on your game.
konamouse (3:47:05 PM): what game should i be working on???
xover222 (3:47:24 PM): Your chess game.
konamouse (3:47:42 PM): i'm a terrible chess player.
konamouse (3:47:47 PM): will you teach me??

xover222 (3:49:18 PM): I'm so bored I'd consider unignoring the bartender.
konamouse (3:49:26 PM): who's the bartender??
xover222 (3:49:36 PM): Mos_Eisley_Bartender.

xover222 (3:51:23 PM): You were nice to reggie so I don't see any reason for not cutting you some slack.
xover222 (3:51:45 PM): Who was it that asked about "Wheezy"?
konamouse (3:52:06 PM): last i heard about wheezy, he got beaten up.
xover222 (3:52:47 PM): Yeah. I found out that's what reggie used to call him. Turns out reggie put him in a coma.
konamouse (3:52:59 PM): reggie beat him up? wow!
konamouse (3:53:08 PM): do you know wheezy's real name?
xover222 (3:53:28 PM): From what I could gather, hit him with a chair and kicked him until the security guys could take him down.
xover222 (3:54:12 PM): Nope sorry I don't know his name.
konamouse (3:54:48 PM): is he still alive?
xover222 (3:55:31 PM): Yes. He's in a coma though. Head trauma, internal bleeding, few broken ribs. Reggie uncorked on him.
xover222 (3:55:48 PM): I say good for Reggie. He finally stood up for himself.
konamouse (3:55:57 PM): where is reggie now?
xover222 (3:56:02 PM): Gone.
xover222 (3:56:12 PM): Lucky you. You get me now.
konamouse (3:56:19 PM): did he get new medications first?
konamouse (3:56:30 PM): well, you're pretty interesting.
xover222 (3:56:52 PM): New medication? Does shock therapy count as medication?
konamouse (3:57:11 PM): naw, shock therapy is a 'treatment', not a medication.
konamouse (3:57:16 PM): reggie got shocked?
konamouse (3:57:18 PM): or did you?
xover222 (3:57:48 PM): You don't get it do you. None of you do. Reggie's gone. He's skipped out on the rest of us. All you get is me till I decide to go too.
konamouse (3:58:35 PM): i get it, Mephisto. you are here now, and reggie is gone, kaput, fled the coop.
xover222 (3:59:25 PM): History.
xover222 (3:59:32 PM): Heh. More like mythology.
konamouse (3:59:41 PM): ooh, i like mythology.
xover222 (4:00:01 PM): So what can Mephisto do for you today?
konamouse (4:00:11 PM): teach me to play chess with you?xover222 (4:00:35 PM): you can sit and watch some.

xover222 (4:02:01 PM): You are truly a lot less chatty than Magesteff.
konamouse (4:02:12 PM): is that good or bad?
xover222 (4:02:25 PM): Neither. Just different.

Then I went into the game and he gave me some pointers and we played until the draw. This was not an "in game" game, just a practice match.

Here is some snipets from the chess room chat:

"Have a seat. The way I've always tried to play is control the center of the table. Split it in half and you can run the board."

"Now I never study moves or openings or defences. I just play what feel right. Don't just move pieces to move them. Don't be a "pusher". Use your moves to take control."

He made sure I knew how all the pieces moved.

"Use the pieces. Don't be afraid to lose them. Demoralize the other player. To do this, I will trade queen for queen and watch him run the rest of the game. Like a chicken without its head."

I confirmed he is an aggressive player. He tracks "free moves" (if you put a piece in a position where he can go anywhere without endangering any of his pieces, or take one of yours without retaliation - "a move I get to make to improve my position while you lost a move having to react. These are my terms."

He allowed me to undo turns to show me better choices. Then I had to take a defensive move and said to him "running sucks."

"Running is all you have sometimes. Look at ole Reggie."

He finished by pointing out that one can "bluff" and "check" in chess (because I have been playing poker instead of chess, and he had to lure me out of my poker room today).

konamouse (5:06:27 PM): how do you bluff in chess?
xover222 (5:06:54 PM): make the other guy think you want to trade queens or pieces early. Make him run. Gain the free move.
konamouse (5:07:03 PM): did i do that?

Then he logged out.
He was polite and a gracious teacher. He might like me because I was nice to Reggie (and Reggie may have "told" him about me).

As far as chesslive knows, there is no game in its database that matches even the first 5 moves of this game...

The only reference I could even find to black's first two moves, Nf6 & Nc6 was the name "Black Knights Tango" the best known player to use it is G. Orlov. Orlove wrote a book about it. Another name for it is "The Mexican Defence", because it was used by Carlos Torre in the early 1900's.

New game? He told Kona:

SPEC: Perhaps Mephisto is not playing the way the first two did. The few games I tracked before I played and got booted from the room, it appeared to me he was not always playing the same moves. he also played several "non-player" people a lot longer than the other two did (i.e. they played until we show up, he resigns and boots the other player).

Dashcat, I sent you the moves from yesterday, do you see any pattern in them?

Regarding the Allentown Chess club article:
The Field Guide to the Modern Chess Player
By Sascha Fink

The one that Mephisto may fall into is: Expert/Master
Quote:
In a local chess club, you will most often have at least on Expert/Master Player. This player is confident, aggressive yet somewhat subdued, and supportive of the other categories of players. Most often, the Expert/Master will attach himself to one or two Players in Training and pass on his knowledge to the next generation. Rarely, although it does happen, there are Expert/Master players that are simply too good for everyone and wouldn't think of wasting their time instructing such pitifully weak players (after all, one day those weak players may beat him and take rating points away). Because of the level of confidence in play, Expert/Masters are often "Screwdrivers" or "Pressers", "Quick Traders", and due to their complete understanding of USCF rules, "Standard Castlers".

Strongly doubt it. That's part of his assertiveness and posturing. He's connoting that the position that he's put his opponent in is on his terms, and that he's in control of the game. That doesn't suggest anything more than his obvious personality change, with the sublimation of the Reggie persona under Mephisto's.

Reminds me of the Genie's quote from Aladdin - "I'm history. No I'm mythology. Oh, I don't care what I am, I'm free."

For the first time, reggie, or Mephisto or whoever he wants to be called now was online the same time as I. I tried to play chess against him but from some reason I can't get the java on the yahoo page to work Sad Guess I'm sitting out this round for now.

SPEC

I'm starting to think that Reggie is suffering from what used to be called Multiple Personality Disorder, now called Dissassociative Identiy Disorder. "Mephisto" refers to "Reggie" in the third person. Someone else commented that Mephisto's personality style is less hesitant than Reggie's usually seems to be. We know Reggie is hospitalized for mental illness. We know that Reggie seems to have been very, very traumatized. Severe trauma is the first precurser to splitting the personality.

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly called Multiple Personality Disorder, has several diagnostic features:
• The presence of two or more distinct identities, each with its own unique, and enduring, way of relating to the world and self.

• At least two of these identities recurrently take control of the person’s behavior.

• An inability to recall important personal information to an extent that is more than ordinary forgetfulness. Classic examples are finding new clothes in your closet which you don’t remember buying; finding yourself in a place or situation and not being able to remember how you got there; having a complete loss of memory for what happened in the previous few days.

DID would not be diagnosed if the symptoms did not cause a major disturbance to the person’s life or if they were due to the physiological effects of a substance (e.g., drugs or alcohol) or a general medical condition.

Also some people have spec'd that Reggie is a Manchurian candidate -- he's been brainwashed and is controlled. Some therapists have speculated that most cases of DID in the US are not cases that the patient is suffering from when he/she presents to the therapist. Instead, the DID is induced through improper therapeutic techniques - mostly recovered memory work and the use of hynosis. These can be used to induce false memories of Satanic ritual abuse, for example, that the patient did not have when the patient presented for therapy. Dr. Braun in Chicago has been sued for this a lot.

Potentially it could be profitable for someone to ask Mephisto for information about Reggie. Anybody game?

Lawdog

Lawdog, i think your estimation of multiple personalities is correct. We've been asking Mephisto about Reggie many times, and he speaks of him with contempt, and says that he's gone. Moreover, he says that he's in the same room that Reggie was in.

There aren't many other reasonable theories aside from the Dissociative Identity one.

Interestingly, I wouldn't expect Mephisto to know the xover222 login data/password. If it were a personal computer, then I would expect all that data to be automatically stored to prevent the need to re-enter it. However, we had Reggie logging in from the library - where I would expect him to not automatically logon.

I haven't ever chatted with Mephisto. Could someone ask him where he's logging in from? If it's the library, we could ask how he would know Reggie's login and password... (Easy answer: he found it written down somewhere. Hard answer: they share the same memory about this thing.)

Lawdog and DMax

What you 2 are talking about is old news... This was discussed last night in #acheron chat.. I brought it up and Kona agreed with me.

So you both are right but you both get a TROUT for bringing up something that has already been talked about...

Cute, RAM, but I brought it up weeks ago in chat, and some folks are still catching on. I was merely asserting that Lawdog was right.

So you get it back.
