[RING] Community to-do wiki proposal

This is my first ARG, and I just dived in last night. This is all very cool. Smile

From the perspective of a newcomer, what I've noticed is that it's very hard to figure out where to be useful, because you don't know what the up-to-the-minute status is. Information is very spread out, only somewhat organized, and individual pages are often out of date. And you hesitate to start working on a problem, becuase you're not sure if you've missed a post or wiki page somewhere that already has 90% of the answer worked out.

I think it would be very helpful to have a community "To Do" wiki, listing specific tasks that need to be done, along with who is working on them and links to relevant background & status info. This would help newcomers (or people who've been away for a bit) understand how they can get involved quickly & effectively.

So I've created a first stab at such a "To Do" wiki. It has only a little bit of data in it right now, so it is primarily illustrative:

http://olympics.wikibruce.com/TasksToBeDone

Feel free to make suggestions or just to edit it directly, of course... it's a wiki.

As I'm new to ARGs, I'm posting here for feedback. I've left the wiki page orphaned for now, until I can see whether the community thinks this is worthwhile. If so, I'll put in some time to populate it more fully, encourage people to use it, and try to get it to escape velocity so that it is self-sustaining from community updates.

As an aside, I'm open to hearing about other Dikaiosune tasks people think need to be done, as well. Smile

Keep in mind Ariadne's blog (and maybe those of the other TAs, too; I haven't checked) now has a section on the right assigning particular tasks to people identified with each of the 6 ancient strengths by the new personality test (found in the same section). We certainly may well identify tasks besides what she identifies and assigns, but if there is going to be a to-do list on the wiki, we should definitely ensure it contains reference to Ariadne's list for each of the 6 types of people.

It's not clear who's actually working on which specfic task, though, or even if anyone is at all. Or where discussion is happening about task breakdown or progress made. Nor is there a place to put tasks which Ariadne didn't assign, including meta-tasks like wiki organization.

I'd find a concise, single-page repository for all of this really helpful.

Technically, the Puzzles page is to accomplish the same thing... perhaps if those two pages could combine forces somehow.

We want to try to avoid duplicating information on the wiki; one reason I made the player list separate than on each attribute. There are a number of 'types' of outstanding tasks (whether wiki-specific, game-specific, or generaliezed ala the beginner's guide)... now the individual attributes are also listing outstanding tasks.

I think perhaps the Puzzles name is not as indicitive to this game as much as others, so combining the two pages would be best. I'm going to need to rework the wiki sidebar too Smile

Go Dikaiosune! =P

Smile

Perhaps my page should be split up into pieces -- for example, the puzzles page could have a chart at the top for "next steps outstanding"? And there could be something similar for Wiki tasks elsewhere, etc.

Happy to help w/the legwork, just unclear on what I should/shouldn't edit, so trying to feel it out...

likewise Wink the dynamic of the game seems to change as it progresses... this latest development of strengths is another shift in structure.

The game moves in interesting ways. It's a lot of work (we're all volunteers after all) to undertake to keep everything completely up to date.

I would recommend that new folks read as much as they can stand and then drop into irc and ask what's hot. There's usually someone there who knows what's going on at that moment. Then read up on THAT (find related threads etc) to catch up on whatever's already been done. Then solve the puzzles!
