I like this theory, Ikkarus, but a somewhat different use of the word "ring" was given in the Seoul chapter:

Quote:
Most importantly, organizing a Labyrinth event was declared a crime against the gods – punishable with lifelong exile.

This had to be the end of the Labyrinth. But it was not.

A secret society of former agonothetai refused to abandon the sport. They wrote a pact:

The most important game should not be forgotten. The ring must not be broken. In order to retain the worlds within, we will continue the playing.

They thus decided to continue both the training and competition of Labyrinth runners. No longer heroes of the Ancient Olympiad, the runners would be secret keepers of the great tradition.

Not sure how this relates to the other uses of the word...

Here's what I'm thinking:

There's a ring made up of the six different geographic worlds. That ring needs to be synchronized periodically to prevent Very Bad Stuff. But each member of that ring is itself a ring of the same type of world. So our ring would be the Gaia ring, and because we've stopped running the synchronization labyrinths, we've broken the larger ring of worlds. The Gaia world ring is creating too many branching universes because we haven't synchronized with the other 5 world rings in a long time. The ring is currently broken because we broke it. And the athletes are here to help us fix it before it's too late. They were told to "find the lost ring". Well, they did. They're already here. They just forgot what they were supposed to do once they got here.

I really like this theory as it ties in well with the idea that the "ring" is not an object but rather created by members.
I concur Very Happy

I love that, Ikkarus!!! It makes perfect sense. Great explanation--Way to combine story threads! I totally think you've got something there.

This is precisely the kind of stuff we should be sharing with all the Agonothetai, which brings me to my previous post about getting some sort of system worked out to scan individual blogs, discuss as a group and then take back findings to each one.
Both chinese translators are on-board to help with Mei Hui's Blog, I am willing to work on Diego's, but that leaves all the rest. I contacted all the french translators, but that was the extent of it. Any ideas, volunteers?

I found this page on the wiki.... It looks like these people would be good choices to contact...

I really like the idea of a group of people summarizing for everyone else.... Perhaps we should tweak this page more...

Yup you got it GeekDream... I think updating that is probably good, I for one meant to add myself but couldn't figure out how to do it Embarassed
that's actually where I got my Chinese and French contacts. Maybe someone would be willing to contact the German and Japanese Translators. Also it I'm wondering what this centralized location where we all get together to discuss should be. Should it be here? a new Thread? a wiki?
I can also give whomever is willing to pm the translators the pm I sent the others. It might make it easier since all you'd have to do is change the names. Otherwise I can just PM them myself later, now I actually have to make some dinner Rolling Eyes

I'll help out... the wiki is a bit intimidating at first.... but not hard..

maybe it would be helpful to set up a walk through on how to edit wiki's for beginners....

I think the wiki is a good central location... the "timeline" section could easily be updated by the main members with their updates...

I think its probably a lot like you said.. in that people are not sure HOW to edit the wiki that is causing problems...

let me work on it... thebruce, others? you want to help? Smile

there is help page linked in the sidebar - describing syntax and customizations and whatnot.

I set up templates to try to make editing visually formatted pages much easier. (all the pages with translation would be much more tedious or confusing without that Interaction template I set up)

I think when adding translations to the pages, the code really couldn't get much simpler. The nice thing is, if people watch the changes that are made, then if a beginner simply pastes text in without formatting it or anything, others will come in and fix it up... that's typically what I do. I have the recent changes fed into my rss reader, so I scan/moderate all the changes that are made. I try to take a hands-off approach on others' edits unless it's effectively breaking the page.

If more people watch the recent changes list, then it'll be easier to encourage people to not worry and just make changes. Don't know how much simpler it can get - click edit at the top, find what needs to be changed or added, then save it. If you don't, can't, or don't know how to do wiki code, someone else will fix it up. *shrug* I personally just try to mainly focus on keeping content consistent... formatting, layout, etc.

There's also a section in the sidebar for page templates - so if a new blog, artifact or some kind of chat/interaction needs adding, copy the code from the appropriate page and make whatever edits are necessary...

Beyond that, hey, if you've got suggestions on how to make it more user-friendly, then by all means, I'm open ears Smile.

We just have to remember that not everyone will edit wikis... every arg seems to end up with a core person or people who make the majority of updates. So those of us who are fluent in wiki'ing, just watch for things that aren't added, then add them ourselves. For translations, encourage people make the edits, but if we see something that's not copied over yet, take a few minutes and make the edit.

I'm one of the german translators and would be willing to help.

I'm able to mess around with the wiki too. Just some basic stuff but I already translated stuff there so it shouldn't be a problem. Smile

Hooray for Tech Savvy people!

GeekDream would you be willing, and so kind as to set up a wiki page for us to start this discussion and put a link to it here?. If you get that far I promise I will teach myself to post there and will get up some info from Diego's Blog, and I will also let the Chinese translators know to post there. Thanks so much to all willing to help, yay for Aerith for willing to do the German, we just need a French, and Japanese translator. I will do Ariadne's till someone else is willing to take on that one.

Thanks again everyone.

Just listened to the most recent trailer again...Eli says:

Quote:
"The legend centers on a ring--The lost ring, hidden in the early years of the last century...It's never been found...They say the ring has a power to reveal an ancient secret, and protect the earth from powers beyond our imagination..."

Hidden in the early years of the last century? If the lost ring is the earth, does he actually mean it was hidden in the early years of the 19th century (a.k.a., 1814?)

That does make it sound like an actual physical object, rather than the whole world. But I don't know, I still like my theory. Probably because it's mine.

LOL...I love your theory, and I still believe it's right, and Eli's not gonna change my mind. Very Happy There's got to be some way of interpreting all the ways the term's been used, but I really believe yours is closest to the truth.
