[Meta] Saving the real world through game design

http://avantgame.blogspot.com/2008/06/video-saving-real-world-through-game.html

In Jane's interview (follow the blog entry link), she specifically mentions FTLR, and more importantly talks about bringing players to Olympics at the end to compete.

It appears, to me at least, that there is confirmation that the training and practice may actually *get you a trip to the Olympics*. Maybe the top competitors? The top walls? Who knows..

Listen to the interview and tell me what you think..

Now that you mention it ... I watched that video two or three days ago but didn't think so much about it. Probably I somehow mixed up the terms "characters" and "players". And I presume what she really means is that everyone should feel as if s/he was taking part in the Olympics.

If you are right, however, and if indeed people will be sent to Beijing, I hope those delegates of the Agonothetai will blog and twitter and film every second of their stay and adventures there!

Very Happy

Yeah, I, too, immediately thought of players as getting a trip to the Olympics...or at least to the Olympic Lawn (whatever that is...too lazy to research) in Beijing, where a labyrinth will be run according to what Jane says in that video. My thinking is some of the teams who do really well in the training labyrinths will get to go...I'd say our record-breakers, so long as they make that fix that Eli pointed out and don't have the walls travel *with* the runner, but rather get out of line and then back in line to re-form the walls further along (I hope you understand what I'm saying here; I'm pretty tired lol).

That would be really neat! It sounds crazy/ impossible though! Will Kai whip up a visa and passport for you if yours is expired? Rolling Eyes

When Jane was talking about The Lost Ring at SXSWi I remember she said something about how everyone had a chance of becoming a champion if an olympic sport was suddenly discovered or rediscovered- unlike existing sports where the competitors have years of training, everyone is equally inexperienced so anyone could become champion.

I've been wondering if that wasn't allowed. The walls moving with the runner. Guess that means we need to recruit more in SF to be able to run again.

Yeah, I think we just got unlucky the last couple times we did it.

And as I mentioned to Mr. Judkins:

The SF and Wellington teams totally need to meet up before this is over and have an epic faceoff.

The video is well worth watching, as Jane is an intelligent and compelling speaker. Smile
I agree that it sounds like a few Lost Ring players might be going to Beijing. Shocked

The thing is, she doesn't actually say "characters" or "players"...she says they will be taking "people" to the Olympic lawn. "People" doesn't necessarily mean players, but I was thinking, if they only take the characters we've already met, and if they need 10 people to do the labyrinth in addition to the travelers (the 6 who want to return home and James--and Renata?), then they'll need some help...hopefully from players. If the traveler are able to be part of the labyrinth, they might be able to get away with doing it without help from us, but they'd need Monica and Kai and Larissa all to help out.

By the way, the official Terms of Use page does include the following:
Quote:
You understand that the Game is for entertainment purposes only and no prizes or awards will be given in connection with Game.
But then, Kai has said if we manage to complete the mission we can keep our Trackstick, and there has been other swag (the tattoos, the stickers, the artifacts)...maybe there is a possible trip to China, but we'll just not consider it a "prize" Wink.

I take "people" to mean 2 or more persons Razz that is, they can easily hire any number of people to perform the lost sport as part of the ceremony... And while the game can't be 'explained' to the world just then, and it's really not going to be an official olympics sport in the games, it'll likely be a visual portion of the open and/or closing ceremonies... so I'm thinking we'll see a large, to very-large, labyrinth design at some point in the presentation with people running it. As the world isn't following the game, it would just be confusing if they tried to explain the significance of the labyrinth run, which is why i think it'll be purely a visual component, yet have added meaning for those of us who are following The Lost Ring.

And i take that to mean prizes and rewards as a response to offically endorsed tasks with the defined result being a prize. I don't think 'swag' counts legally as a 'prize' or a 'reward' Smile

that's how I understood those items at least...
