[BLOG] Apr 06 Markus makes a discovery

Quote:
Haben Wir Vielleicht Etwas Wichtiges Verpasst?!
06/04/2008 11:19

OMPHALE(In ENGLISCH)...

Was könnte hier los sein?

I had to do it. I am Thumos, I need adventure, I want to solve this riddle.

Yesterday I went to City Hall in Cardiff, where Ariadne found the first artifact, the one with the strength quiz.

I followed Ariadne's movements, looked where she looked. I went into the room where she found the artifact, and was astonished when I found an old painting.

The date on the painting showed 1887.

I have pictures of the painting above. The first is of the painting, the second is the title of the painting. The title is "Hercules and Omphale". OMPHALE (In ENGLISH) ... Omphale like "Omphalos"?

I am sure this is no coincidence. It is simply too similar to be. But what could it mean?

I know how the artifact in Sydney was found in the vicinity of Olympic torches. Could it be that any location where an artifact was found, a second is (also)? Could it be that a second story/history was hidden before our eyes the whole time?

Did the Keepers of the Lost Ring find a second away to tell the story? If so, we must go back to the other artifact locations and see if there was anything that we have missed.

What could be going on? What do you think of this discovery? I am sure this is no coincidence. Maybe we were too fixated previously, we had our eyes closed, we were blind. We have missed what was right in front of us.

Discuss this discovery here

Oh! Duh! The job of Mythopoeia is to "Hide the truth in plain sight"! Of course they had their own Mythopoeia and of course that's what they did.

So what do we know about the location of each Omphalos?

Not the locations of the Omphalos, but the locations where the artifacts have been found.

So we have to go back to all the locations.

[META on] I guess the PMs thought we would find those things on those places, but it seemes everybody rushed in, took the artifact and left as fast as possible to post it to the others Smile [META off]

And now all the artifact picker-uppers are echoing a collective groan at potentially having to go back...

Unfortunately, I can't go back to the Tokyo pickup location for the time being. By the way, the name of the bar in the 2nd floor of the pickup place is Fukuro, which means owl, the symbol of Sofia.

Some possible SPECs, in no particular order:

Several of the artifacts were found in books -- could it be important to know what those are? E.g., Is "The Life of Sam Houston" a clue to a location in Houston? Did we ever figure out what "Brave and Bold" referred to in Stockholm? It's a book by Horatio Alger, for whatever that's worth. What about the etching in Brussels and the "English language book" in Seoul? Notice that we have two "Casa" locations and two "City" locations. Also, does the City Hall location in Cardiff have anything to do with the City Hall in the center of the map of Philadelphia that Monica just found?

What kind of a story does this painting tell? (I can't find the painting by Googling, although I've seen plenty of references to Omphale and Hercules--and several paintings--and the characters' story doesn't seem related to our story at all.) So I don't know that the things themselves that may seem related are going to tell us much. I wonder if this was a real painting, or just a poster? If just a poster it may have been put up to hide something else behind it. (If this is a painting, I doubt the City Hall folks would let Markus mess with it.) Likewise, the books may have had something handwritten inside. I'll e-mail Markus to ask him about the painting.

I also can't imagine there's much that Pita could've missed at the location of the fake ship and chest in SF--although maybe there's something else in the general vacinity.

Austin History Center- no problem for me to return if needed.
It would be cool if some other Austin players would come out of the woodwork too! Wink
I took a couple of pictures of the fresco while I was there because the winged horse reminded me of the wing on the Cardiff codex pages.

but I am a bit underwhelmed with Markus's discovery. . . can anyone see the images?

Hmm, I'd be happy to go check out Fort Mason in a bit. I'll bring along my camera in case I find anything. I'm with Elizabeth though--I can't imagine what would be there connected to the all of this that hmrpita might have missed. :O

EDIT: Okay, well I went and checked it out and like I suspected, there wasn't anything there that seemed obviously relevant to our search--nothing like Olympic torches or a painting of someone named Omphale, at least. However, I did look up the name of the ship whose stern is in the wall and found some interesting information which may or may not be important.

Quote:
In 1905 - 1911 Galilee served as the carrier for the Carnegie Oceanic Magnetic Survey party. The purpose of the survey was to correct the meager and inaccurate data of magnetic variations gathered up to 1905. At this time, modifications were made to the vessel. Every ounce of metal not absolutely necessary was replaced from the ship to reduce the influence on highly magnetic apparatus to a minimum. The success and real value of Galilee, as demonstrated during her career with Carnegie Institute, are the contributions made to navigation from the results of her surveys. Galilee collected data from 64,000 miles of voyage that is still in use today.

Sounds sorta like what we're doing, trying to map out the different worlds and gathering data, I guess.

Here's an image of the ship's voyages:

Since mrjudkins' friend didn't get into the game, I'm the closest to Sydney. I'll see what I can do this weekend, but I'm not promising anything. My holidays are coming up, so I'll try and get a couple of friends together. We'll go and scour that lobby - though I do think the torches are the obvious bet.

I went back to the history center. There are paintings, photos and maps all over the reading room, but no real AHA! moments for me. The book The Life of Sam Houston is no longer there. No surprise in that. It wasn't on the shelf when I first went, and I had to give the guy a moment to plant the artifact (he wasn't expecting us to arrive until Tuesday that week.)

The lobby has a huge painting of waves, if you want to read something in to that- it's mostly green, and ocean-ish with no land or boat. It had no visible title plate- there is a place on the frame where you'd expect to see one. We can call it the Sunk Island of Atlantis and assume that Theo has been and pried the title off. Wink I'm sorry I didn't photograph the wave painting now that I've thought of that.

The link above has more photos I took today in case anyone can see anything there that I missed.

You good people who are taking the time to go back to revisit these locations should email or post to Markus and tell him that there have been no more amazing discoveries, to see what he says...

I believe you are the closest to Sydney at the moment, since my Melbourne trip has had to be extended.
I actually tried to get some photos of the lobby after easter. A tip for you, don't assume there will be lots of buses along Pitt Street after 7pm, especially when you have an interstate journey that starts at 8:30pm. Embarassed I may not have come anywhere close to centrepoint, but I did find a delightful spanish restaurant. Smile

Just letting you know QED, a member of the Tokyo pickup party, says he can go back to the place today.

I agree with this--If people e-mail him and tell him what they've seen, but they can't understand how it could relate to the story, I'm guessing we may get more information. Also, Jasper, if you tell him the book's no longer there--and we need the book for some reason--it may magically reappear.
