Looking for someone to design a game for me
Interested?

First, I'm not an ARG player, but I'm fascinated by them. I'm looking to commission someone to design (and perhaps help run) a small game for me as part of another event. I'll explain:

I organize a small weekend-long workshop for some friends in my industry every so often. I'd like to include as part of the next one a lightweight ARG as part of the workshop.

By "lightweight" I mean that I'd almost like it to recede into the background. The rest of the workshop is the main event here. I think this game will be to a "regular" ARG what a haiku is to a novel.

I have some particular ideas about what the themes of the game should be, and I'd like help in structuring these into an actual playable game. Certainly the game can include puzzles (though perhaps no more than three or so), and ideally would involve some real-world activity or objects (these are called "drops", right?). It would be ideal to include a non-present character who might interact with players via a few email messages, Twitter postings, Flickr images, maybe a Skype chat. Again, these would be fairly minimal...this game should almost be like ambient music. Perhaps some people won't even pick up on it. "Lightness" may itself even turn out to be a theme for the game.

Has anyone heard of or participated in something like this? I apologize if this is the wrong forum for asking these questions. (And if you can point me to the right place, please do!)

Thanks!

Yeah – I know what you're talking about.

Since you're holding a workshop, and your target audience is all in one place, you should obviously focus on live events. Maybe have a bit of a treasure-hunt type thing? I would start a day or two before the workshop and have the character with a twitter and IM/skype as you mentioned. Maybe make them contact one of the workshop attendees and say, "Hey – [something happened/I lost something/event involving location] happened to me/etc at [workshop location]. I heard from a friend at work that you're attending a workshop at [location]. Maybe you can help while you're there? I gave a bit of an account at my twitter account at..."

Or something like that. I'm quite inexperienced with this type of ARG, though, so don't go on just my word Smile

I'm not sure if live events would be the sort of thing that the OP was looking for - they're probably too distracting. The impression I get is that they're looking for something that'll catch peoples curiosity instead of their attention. Something that people might poke around with during lulls in the workshop, that they could easily picked up and then put back down again, and that could help break the ice ("hey did you see that weird sign?" "Yah, it actually leads to this thing over there"). So probably something like a puzzle trail with a story built around it. An idea that popped into my head would be looking into things that somebody left behind at the workshop locatiion, which would lead people to the person's internet present, which would lead them to some sort of story about the person.

What's the workshop about? You'd want to tie the plot of the ARG to the subject of the workshop and the structure would be shaped by the plot.

A lot of "feel good" meetings have prizes taped under chairs; ($5.00 Starbucks cards or whatnot). Having one of the people find something else under their chair might be a fun start. Avow knowledge only of the Starbuck's cards.

Sounds like a perfect thing to add into such a workshop weekend!

What has become of this? Is it passed? If not, I'd be interested in helping if you didn't get any takers.
