A barrel
Check out the sign on the barrel, just when the happy gang is released by the army sergeant. What is it doing in the middle of New York? I recognise the sign. Check here .
Btw. Doesn't that look like the swirl from the sword logo?
Edit: wrong link.

Well since they seem to have some sort of Bio containment unit there it would make sense for their stuff to have biohazard markings.

I'd imagine that, what with the exploding sick people, they'd need some biohazard warnings around ('cause I'm assuming they put the people parts in the barrels. )

Biohazard sign? Yeah, it would seem normal since the infected people hanging around etc.. But it would make more sense to have the sign on the wall. Makes me think whatever is IN the barrel is dangerous (exploded people's remains? Maybe not).
I know there's no connection, but the same sign's appears on the Aladygma website...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who had to search long and hard before I actually found the barrel.

Yeah I noticed that in theaters. I had a theory on that. Just throwin it out there. Ok on the Tidowave page here-
http://tidowave.com/blog/?p=5#comments
theres this comment.
When I was working at a Slusho! counter in Adelaide, Australia, our boss Ronny used to make us dump the contents of unfinished Slusho! cups directly into the river that ran behind our store. I tried to resist but he threatend to give my job to his 16-year-old nephew, so I guiltily complied. Weeks later I started to notice that certain fish were waiting for me when I arrived with the day's used Slusho! remnants, and would fight each other for it. It was deeply disturbing, and I'm still working on that memory with my therapist.
Now also on the Tagruato site. They stated that Seabed Nectar was approved by the FAA which is here-
http://tagruato.jp/headlines.php?story=news_08_01_09_2
There it states this:
"Members of Tagruato's elite corporate board were greeted with a rare surprise yesterday as founder Ganu Yoshida visited their emergency home screens in a simultaneous teleconferencing broadcast. After much discussion, Yoshida revealed that kaitei no mitsu, the special Slusho! ingredient lovingly known as "Seabed's Nectar", had been approved by the American Food Association.
"Those lost at Chuai would be smiling this day," commented a choked-up Ganu Yoshida, "Tagruato stands strong against the evil of ecologist terror."
Tagruato can now proceed with their extensive American campaign for bringing Slusho! to the western world. In addition to the creation of three Western-only flavors, Slusho! representatives claim that many other surprises are in store for their new audience.
"This has been a dream of ours for a long time," smiles Slusho! Administrative Coordinator Mika Srauy, "We've already secured relationships with several prominent American distributors and are compiling our own Western-oriented marketing team."
The board applauded the news, thanking their friends in foreign lands for such strong support in troubled times.
"Ordinarily there would be more happiness in our celebration but it has been a dark week," admitted Slusho! Administrative Head Ben Miyake, "I am proud to be part of such a brave company."
So assuming that seabed nectar was approved by the FAA, Im sure if they needed proper disposal practices they would make them stick to them considering they will even send scientists to teach you how to use the slusho machine and how to create the drinks. thats stated on the slusho distrubution opportunities page.
So with that out of the way. The barrel was in the alley of the mall. why would they have bio waste at the mall? Unless Slusho was approved in 2008 and the events in the movie really do happen in 2009 working with robs "its sat. may 23....." This may also explain why the Tagruato tanker was in NY. They could have been dropping off the Seabed nectar because it states on the slusho site they would deliver it to your storefront biweekly.

There could be any number of chemicals in that barrel for any number of uses.
Medical waste is considered a biohazard.

Point is, I don't think any mall/laboratory or even the military would just put a barrel filled with dangerous chemicals out in an alley.

Yeah thats what im thinkin too. not to mention theres not one place in a mall that would make biowaste that i can offhand think of. Especially in this day and age.

The thing is, they have to do something with it. Why not leave it there for the time being, it's not like they would be necessarily concerned about properly disposing the material with everything else going on at the time.
Personally, i'd like to believe it's filled with pieces of the dead, exploded shells of people.
Or pancakes.

So your trying to tell me that the government heard about the monster rampaging the city, sent word to the army, and while getting things to prepare an emergency hospital post in the mall, someone thought "Hey we better properly dispose of any bio waste!"? I would think waste recepticals wouldn't be in the monster defense kit...
But lets be honest here, the barrel is a prop. It helped fill out the makeshift hospital atmosphere needed in that scene. I appreciate the attention to detail, but there is nothing more then a side-boob here...not complaining though.
