[BLOG] Diego spots Eli in B.A.

New blog entry from Diego:

Diego

I can not say that I am 100% sure, but I am sure ALMOST saw Eli Hunt, I looked for reojo made as if I had not seen and continued walking. We ran in the crowd but could not reach it until he finally came to the Sociedad Argentina de Esperanto ...

I went in and he had disappeared. I asked at reception for him, about the person who had just entered, and I knew not to say anything ...

Indeed, I saw that came in the same building where the company operates Esperanto, but I am sure that has come to society, but I think too much coincidence ...

What are you doing Eli Hunt in Buenos Aires? What does this have to do with the League of Esperanto? Is He fled because he saw me and recognized me?

BTW Diego uses often the name "malabar-diego", What does "malabar" mean? I only found a reference to an Indian region??

[EDIT] Fencer on IRC just said that it means "Juggler". Which makes sense.

Iv'e always assumed it was just his surname.

Sometimes, he does reverse it like some Asian cultures do, though.

Looking further, I see it's another name for the Tamul language, a province in India and can also mean "The voice of the west", among several other things.

better translation (sorry):
Today, I went to the Buenos Aires Esperanto Society. Perhaps some of the other agonetethai were there and had questions. I wasn't really hoping to get that much, but when I was coming [arriving], I was really surprised. I can't say I am 100% sure, but I'm ALMOST positive that I have seen Eli Hunt. I looked at the *untranslateable* and pretended that I hadn't seen [him], and continued walking.

I ran through the crowed but I couldn't catch up with him, until finally [I saw] him enter the same Buenos Aires Esperanto Society....

I entered, and he had disappeared. I asked at the reception for him, about the person who had just entered, and they didn't know or tell me anything.

To tell the truth, I saw him enter the same building where the Esperanto Society functioned, but I wasn't certain if he had actually come [to work at] the society, even though it seemed a little too coincidental...
¿Qué está haciendo Eli Hunt en Buenos Aires? ¿Qué tiene que ver con la Sociedad de Esperanto? ¿Huyó porque me vio y me reconoció?
What is Eli Hunt doing in Buenos Aires? What does he have to see/do at the Esperanto Society? Did he flee because he saw me and realized who I was?
--Diego[/quote]

I took a few liberties with the translation (nothing major-- just a more approximate translation instead of a literal). Please, native hispanohablantes, tell me/correct the text if you see a mistake.

Except that he shouldn't have a surname -- just like the other amnesiacs, he doesn't remember his real name and someone else picked the name Diego for him. Right?

That's true, but they've all got surnames on their passports (Ariadne's is Mascotte).

Notice that Diego includes the street number in one of the photographs of the Society's meeting place...and partially doubts that Eli is actually there for the Society. I wonder if we are supposed to figure out what happens in that building, or what events the Society might have had going on at the time?

I have had the same idea, but I even could not find out the street the Esperanto society is in.

In this thread in Diego's forum, they discuss (I think) the fact that the location of the artifact in Buenos Aires is near the Esperanto Society, at 2357 Paraguay St.

That's correct. La Calle Paraguay 2357. And everything I've found says that the Esperanto society is the second buzzer at that address. I initially found the address from a Wikipedia Association that had a meeting there in May of last year.

http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Encuentros/IV_Encuentro_de_Wikipedistas_en_Buenos_Aires

I can't find out (so far) what's at the first buzzer. It's possible that it's an Argentinian Customs office but I haven't confirmed that yet.

There is a meeting to practice Esperanto at this location next Saturday at 4pm though. That info (along with the address) is also posted on the Esperanto Argentina website.

http://www.esperanto.org.ar/veni_a_practicar/

Roughly machine translated it says -
Quote:
Every second and fourth Saturday of every month at 16 hours, we gather to practice Esperanto. The topics to be discussed are diverse. The meetings are free and free.

To participate not require prior knowledge: if the majority do not understand a certain topic, he explained. These meetings will take place on the street Paraguay 2357, 2nd buzzer.

You can see a map by clicking here.

The next meeting will be on Saturday, April 26, 2008.

If you have any questions for us, please.

Maybe someone should be there next Saturday and see if Eli attends? Or at least see if anyone recognizes him. We could point out the session to Diego and see if he thinks it's worth checking out since it's open to the public and no prior knowledge of Esperanto is necessary. Heck, maybe he could use the practice anyway.

Perhaps VictorSueiro could check it out? Isn't he in that area?

What does Diego say about Theo in the video he posted?
The blog entry says:
No sabemos nada de Theo... quién es, qué quiere, por qué hace lo que hace, pero cada cual tiene sus sospechas.

If someone could transcribe the video that'd be great, because I have no sound on my computer Razz Then I can translate it for you all.

Nice find... Diego has now put most of his videos on dotSUB -- I wonder if the idea is to subtitle them.
http://dotsub.com/home/user/?target=6078

Other new additions to dotSUB-

Ariadne: http://dotsub.com/home/user/?target=6069 (2 videos, already seen)

Noriko: http://dotsub.com/home/user/?target=6076 (no videos yet)
EDIT: this also seems to be for Noriko: http://dotsub.com/home/user/index.php?target=6810 (6 videos)

Mei Hui: http://dotsub.com/home/user/?target=6079 (4 videos, already seen)

Lucie: http://dotsub.com/home/user/?target=6080 (no videos yet)

Kai: http://dotsub.com/home/user/?target=6081 (no videos yet)

Larissa: http://dotsub.com/home/user/?target=6082 (2 videos, including a new one about Theo, I think)

Monica: http://dotsub.com/home/user/?target=6083 (2 videos, including a new one about Theo)

[FYI: the other numbers in the sequence belong to "Colin"/6070, "suzbelle"/6071, "gamba"/6072, "findthelostring"/6073, "suztours"/6074, "accessibility"/6075, "Aspentroll"/6077]

I would transcribe the video and translate it, but my Spanish listening skills are a little rusty. I'll just give an outline of what I understood from the video.

Diego first addresses how little we know about Theo. He sent the photo and also left the postcard, which had a cryptic and threatening message. We don't know who he is or what he wants, but Diego thinks that Theo is really Eli Hunt because he is also mysterious and has withheld information from us since the very beginning. He also disappeared one day, with his secretary saying he went to South America. Diego is certain that he saw him in Buenos Aires, and Eli tried to ignore him and get away. Diego has some questions that he wants Eli to answer.

He then reads two emails that he wrote. I didn't quite understand all of the first email that he wrote (it was about whether we should ally with Theo, which he thinks wouldn't work), but the second one was about how NeoPangea would devastate the world. Geographic changes would change the global political structure, and, for better or for worse, he thinks that this is what Eli wants to happen. Diego wants us to stop Eli and get him to tell us what he is doing.

The phrase "No sabemos nada de Theo... quién es, qué quiere, por qué hace lo que hace, pero cada cual tiene sus sospechas" translates to "We do not know who Theo is, what he wants, or why he is doing what he is doing, but everyone has their suspects."
