As for the traces, if what you're referring to is the image below, it's the same text(multiversa vojagado) but all in caps. I could be wrong, I'm really distracted.

Can any of you Photoshop wizards enhance the traces letter-tops on the first page? It looks like there may be enough there to at least guess what the second word is.

Looks to me like the title Multiversa Vojagado in all caps. Like they typed it, then realized that they never used all caps before, and then erased it with a typewriter eraser.

I can make out the VERSA in Multiversa, and the OJAGADO in Vojagado.
Even better spec - I don't see the M in multiversa, or the V on Vojagado.

So they probably had their CAPS key stuck, and typed
mULTIVERSA vOJAGADO.

does that tell us what typewriter they used?
in 1920, typewriters probably had caps lock... but pressing shift with the caps lock on would have had no effect.

when was that feature introduced... where pressing SHIFT with the caps lock on gives you a lowercase letter?

Edit to add: I must be mistaken. That just sounds like a computer keyboard feature, not a manual keyboard feature.
Although it really looks like they typed _ULTIVERSA _OJAGADO where there is space where the M and V would be. notice how all the uppercase letters are lined up exactly with their lowercase letters below.

Don't think they had eraseable typewriter ribbon in the 1920's. Somebody cheated. Wink

And I don't think there ever were manual typewriters where pressing SHIFT printed in lowercase for just one letter. That's a computer thing--maybe electric typewriters did that too, although I don't know for sure. It used to release the Caps Lock, which would mean all the rest of the letters would be lowercase.

I guess this could be some kind of clue that this document isn't authentic. But I'm guessing it's just a mistake (unless that's why the artifact seeker was supposed to take care...but that all sounds too convoluted to me.)

A typewriter eraser is a seriously nostalgic piece of equipment.
(nostalgic sculpture by Claes Oldenberg: http://www.roadsidenut.com/eraser204.jpg) but it's really just an abrasive pink eraser.

All the smudges and erasures and blots on the codex pages are compelling- I keep wanting one memorable blot to be the shape of an island- but so far they seem to be just for atmosphere.

I asked nagi whether she can read the traces above the title, but no replies so far. Now I'll ask her whether they are " ULTIVERSO OJAGADO".

Unagi--Do you know if the scratches were just random, or if they might form some sort of image or lettering?

I'll ask it to nagi too. But I have found some scratches on the original Tokyo artifact. They don't form image or lettering.

One thing I think is fairly strange about this chapter is the concept of space and distance in the multiverse. Why is traveling to a different world in the multiverse supposed to mean covering any space or distance? I thought the worlds were all occupying the same space. Isn't that why the maps need to be superimposed on top of one another?

I also think it's strange. Once I thought the distance might be in the fourth dimension, but perhaps no.
