This is just a generic way of prompting you that you didn't authenticate right. If an in-game resource gave you some idea of a username and password combo to use on the FTP, then trying it would make sense. Probing beyond that is effectively hacking - so don't.

I tried a couple names (teddy hansen etc) and they failed (with a different error message).

However, there certainly is an ftp server running on that site. Could simply be how the puppetmaster's transfer files to it.

There's no 'perhaps' to it.
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, pretty much the oldest tool used to transfer files over a network (and even over console or serial connections I've heard tell, I'm not that old or seasoned in geekdom to have that experience myself). It's exactly how you upload files to a website, as in the industry standard way. No speculation needed. That's exactly by design. That's why there's an authentication - because that's how it's meant to work. Just because some sites don't use the simple logical ftp://(domain name).(top level domain) as their normal FTP access doesn't mean it's not standard - they usually change it to something other than that because the average novice script kiddie wannabe hacker immediately pounds away at that basic URL to see if the webmaster is as stupid as they are.

Please folks, if you were meant to get in there you'd be pointed there. Leave it alone.
