Dave got his cranes yesterday and he's overwhelmed. He's also happy that they're letting him out of the hospital today and continue his treatment from home. Woohoo!
I want to thank Varin for coming up with such a beautiful idea and putting it into action. She did the website and collected & strung all the cranes, as well as sent them to Dave. It was very nicely done.

Oh thank Goddess!!! I have been holding my breath for almost three weeks. That is a great sign they are letting him continue from home.

I am so happy that Dave was discharged from the hospital! I feel a tad guilty that I didin't make as many cranes as I'd hoped, and I also feel a tad guilty that I didn't send the cranes that I did make, but I am so excited that Dave is doing better.
I'm keeping a few cranes up in my room to remind me to keep Dave in my prayers.
(Also, major props to Varin for organizing this whole thing. )

I am so glad that Dave got out of the hospital.
I hope he has more 'good days'! And that our cranes are doing their job.
(Woot, three out of those pics have my cranes in them-- the camera hates me but loves my origami xD)

During Dave's keynote at ARGFest, he spoke about what this meant to him. He said that the doctors told him many times that positive thinking was very important for recovery, and that watching the crane count rise lifted his spirits. He received the package of cranes the day before he came home from the hospital.
As he credited Folding the Wish for being an important part of his remission, I don't think there was a dry eye in the house. *sniffle*

wow did I miss the boat on this one. Just read about it, emailed for the address, got all ready to start folding, and then saw it was dated 'April'. So sorry to have not sent some cranes! Please accept my well wishes post hoc!

Perhaps you and others still interested and inspired by this could try contacting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to see if there might be other patients needing such moral support through such an act. That link is the same posted on Dave's page about his own experience, and I know he is certainly not the only person to have endured such an experience. Many children do every year, and I'm sure many of them would appreciate such an expression of beauty and caring. You might also wish to help by donating marrow and/or helping to increase awareness about such donations. I'm sure Dave would agree that others who shared his experience deserve similar support and that it will honor him to have inspired it.

Support for Leukemia Patients and Christmas Wishes! First, let me start by agreeing with Euchre enthusiastically. There are many, many ways you can help out others with Leukemia like myself, either with moral support or by signing up as a potential bone marrow donor. It's really easy to do online, after which they send you a cheek swab for preliminary testing and matching purposes. Only later, if you are a potential match for someone in need of a transplant, would they do any blood tests or anything further. The process of donating is simple, painless, and not too long, and could quite simply save someone's life. More information is available on the website that Euchre already linked to.
As a potential bone marrow recipient in the near future, that would be the best way to further support me and others with Leukemia as well.
I said "further support", as the original wishes everyone sent me via the origami cranes are still very active in my life and on my mind every day. In fact, we've chosen to decorate our Christmas tree this year with those very cranes and little else (only a few things my 18 month old son just absolutely had to add), as both a reminder of the care and support I have and of what wishes can actually do.
So thanks again everyone. I hope you all get exactly what you wished for this Christmas and get to spend lots of time with those you love.
Dave
