[Ghosts of a Chance] 25-OCT-08 Puzzle Creation Do not read this if you are going to be at the event! I would like to propose we use this thread to do the puzzle creation fFor the Ghosts of a Chance live event. This way, if you are going, you won't accidentally read about the code.
If you are going to the live event (or simply want to avoid spoilers about how the player generated code is built) DO NOT READ THIS THREAD.
Likewise, general game updates (stuff that anyone and everyone might want to know about) should not be posted here.

The original request fFor puzzle is this:
There has already been at least one vote to use the fFlying geese pattern. I'm given to agree we should use that. While I'm a sucker fFor honeycomb patterns, I think it will be easier to hide a more accessible puzzle in the fFlying geese pattern.
We need two things, next. A message, and a crypto method.
We don't know how long or message can be, but I think we should it short and to the point.
Also, we don't really know how complex our encryption scheme can be, since we don't know who will be making the quilt. I am kind of thinking it will be somehow digitally automated in some regard. We shouldn't rely on things like number of threads, or type of stitching. Probably we should stick to something which uses colors as a means of hiding information.
I have some ideas fFor messages and methods, but I'd rather not streamroller the whole thing. What do other people think?

I may be misinterpreting the request...
But, I see it more as a task to develop a code method than to actually encrypt a message.
I think they want to do the encryption using the method we come up with.

I can immediately see one method, shamelessly ripped from the Dorito's Quest. Counting the number of triangles in a column on the Geese quilt square, you will notice that there are exactly 26 triangles in a column...

Oh, hm, you may be right, Rogi. I hadn't considered it fFrom that angle. Well, perhaps they are open to suggestions? I guess maybe we should use some message, at least fFor demonstration purposes.
I was thinking about the code. I think we should consider the audience. People will probably come fFrom a variety of skill levels, so we probably shouldn't make it too annoyingly hard. Also, the solve will probably need to be achievable while standing there in the museum, with the assumption of no other aids. So like, something which can be solved with a little thought and no computer or anything.
One method which comes to mind is: alternating colors to represent letters, based on the length of a string of symbols.
X = A
XX = B
XXX = C
XXXXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX = HELLO

The one I'm suggesting should be doable in the museum. To encode a letter, simply use some method to highlight one of the 26 triangles in each column (a color that stands out or stitch a small x or dot on a triangle) - A is the triangle at the top down to Z at the bottom. The quilt square shown on the Luce site could encode at least a 6-letter word, more if there is a method for marking more than one triangle per column (different color thread for each pass through).

Probably easier fFor the museum to assemble, yes Good idea, Toasty.
If the message is longer than one 6-letter word, I would suggest keeping each word in the same string.
Code:
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
XXXXXXXXX1XXXXXXXX342XXXXX = JUST
XXXX4XXX2X31XXXXXXXXXXXXXX = LIKE
XXXXXXX23XXXXXXXXX41XXXXXX = THIS

Okay, this might be too simple, not sure. I added a letter "A" at the top left to give a sort of starting place.
This sample code should read:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"WANION" -- an excellent choice of message, I think
If there are no objections, I'll send this over to Georgina this afternoon. Cool? I mean, I don't want to steam-roller the operation, but this seems to be the agreed upon plan?

That looks to be exactly what I had in mind. I'd say you've had about the most contact with Georgina, so I think that's cool if you send it along.

I Hope that all of you are still looking at this thread - I just want to thank you for all you gave to Ghosts Of A Chance. We were a great success on Saturday, Oct 25th. Ghosts were banished as 245 players entered our live event and 70 finished all six quests. Your quilt code was a great success. All of us at CityMystery and Playtime Anti-Boredom Society - game designers of Ghosts Of A Chance - thank you. My best, John Maccabee
