Interactive Storytelling Via Social Networking

I was at a conference/networking event for new media last night and there were a bunch of presenters, one of which was presenting on some interactive narrative that she was creating. This narrative unfolds on social networking sites where she has created fake characters who are playing out a drama through some Vlog style videos, twitter, Facebook etc... The only (remote) reference to ARG's in her presentation was an image of the Loneygirl logo (hence remote).

So of course in the question session I asked if she knew about ARG's and she seemed to. But she told me her work was different because it was more of a narrative then 'gaming'. At the time I didn't think it was ideal to continue the conversation about the narrative aspects of ARG's so I have been in touch with her and will be meeting with her soon to discuss all of this.

Another interesting thing was that I was befriended a couple of days before on FB by one of her fake characters. The character claimed they would be at Casecamp as well and I didn't think much of it (certainly not enough to go through the entire profile to find the little disclaimer in the 'About Me' section claiming that the person was fictional) as it is a networking event and the character claimed to simply be wanting to make friends before hand. Apparently I was not the only one who got befriended and there were a couple of people in the back who made comments to the producer that they felt their trust was violated and that what she was doing could cause some problems as her disclaimers were buried in the profile and not clear.

All very interesting! I have seen a lot of similar conversations going on here about trust and the blending of reality and fiction. So I thought I would let the community loose on this and see what comes from it.

I will of course be informing the producer all about the ARG genre (as I think she has more in common with the genre then she seems to think) and also be discussing other things with her - such as player trust and also further possibilities for experimentation...

Wondering if anyone has some opinions on this whole thing they would like to share.

WARNING: This is not an ARG - there are no puzzles and no real gaming aspects. It is an interactive narrative - although I am not even sure if the audience interaction effects the outcome of the storyline...

P.S.
(see thebruce - I do defend the genre too) Wink

Sounds like Chaotic Fiction at it's core.

She might have a story to tell, but if her characters interact with "players" then there is going to be changes to her story depending on what her audience says or does in their conversations with the characters.

You should show her Spacebass' article when he coined the "Chaotic Fiction" term (it's in the unfiction archives).
