Sorry for the triple-post, but it's slightly important. Dan posted again today:
http://dancorrigan.wordpress.com/2008/06/25/reply-to-message/

Read it closely, especially what he says at the end.
Quote:
(And may I remind my active readers that it sounds like the missing material is similar to the material I found in France… and if you've forgotten about that then this may jog your memory.)

It may be well worth the drive for someone in the extended vicinity to make the trek to F'burg. Wish I had an excuse to be down there.

Oh, and there is also a new post on the Replay Studios blog - new screenshots that are looking good.
http://replaystudios.blogspot.com/2008/06/its-been-almost-two-weeks-ive-had-my.html

EDIT - Received a reply back from a PM to Dan about the solve:
Quote:
Thank you! It's there, I can almost see it - sorry for being dramatic, but this is the second part of the cache I found in France.

There's always a 2-stage process, a bit like shedding skin, but in this case an identity.

One iteration gets you a key to something else, in this case the book. Don't be fogged off by the first thing you find. It is meant to check whether "you are who you claim you are," and is part of the process - call it a transitional identity. Who ever this was left for was quite an important person, so this book will lead you to something (always close by, and a quick turnaround). This new item, when combined with whatever is in the book will pinpoint the cache.

Also, I'm feeling dense lately. Going back to Fredericksburg, looking for East Main Street and North Washington, the first hit on one of the Google Maps links I posted earlier is right smack on the corner.
MAP
Berkman Books
Looks and is described like a place I'd hide this book.
Quote:
NEW, USED AND RARE BOOKS
Discover a treasure
in our one of a kind bookstore where you will find a large selection of
Antiquarian Books
Texas Books
New Books
Used Books
Children's Books
Antique Maps and Prints

I've sent email to inquire about the book. Of course, it could still be one of the many antique shops or German restaurants around there as well, but I don't think so.

ETA - Looking at the first picture of the French cache in the link Dan posted again, did we ever figure out what the little playing cards were for?

It's entirely possible that I might be able to make it out there next weekend. Actually, my husband saw the picture of the cash in the French one and wanted to go tomorrow... right before we drive to Houston. Laughing

I thought that might be motivation, but I hope it's not too deceiving. And I think your husband has the right idea. It's only like 80 miles in the wrong direction after all. Smile

Yes, we have the book and it is reserved for a customer.

Woohoo! Now I'm wondering if/how we'll need to prove it's for us.

I got what I think is a verbal password from The Fan via email several days ago.

Here's the story behind the partial retrieve:

Let me start by saying that I dutifully posted the trailhead I received as well as the call for help from The Fan, but I haven't had the time to follow the game at all, so the only bits I knew were what MrToasty had PMed me regarding the cache in Fredericksburg.

We got to the book store and I asked if they had a package for Casper Ebersbach. The lady gave me a package with his name on it in a Genuine German envelope! We then proceeded to spend an hour in the car leafing through the pages and finding absolutely nothing. NOTHING. I kept going back into the store and asking if they had books for any name I could find in this thread, in Dan's blog, on Violette's dream, etc. (I ended up using 60% of my battery life on the phone's GPRS connection. No Edge!) No dice.

We got frustrated and decided to go to Der Lindenbaum for dinner. Only they're not open on Tuesdays. Doh!

So we went to the brewery. *hic*

After a beer and a strudel and many checkings of Twitter, forums, etc., MrToasty told me to check page 49 since it had been mentioned in the same solve as Caspar Ebersbach. There was a name on that page, so we went back to the book store and asked if they had a package for Henry Schultz (or whoever it was). The guy said no, but the problem was they did have a package for _someone_ but they had orders not to give it to anyone but them.

So basically, I needed to go in and say, "Hi, my name is so-and-so. Do you have a package for me?"

So I looked real cute with my list of names, going through them one by one. I even tried, "I'm... Ron... Burgundy?" But when I got to, "My parents had a sense of humor and named me Peter Hayder," the store owners turned to each other and nodded. That was it! Hooray! Daylight was fading fast, and so were my children.

I grabbed the package, thanked the owners, and went back to the car. Where we spent another long time leafing through the book. Zero, zilch, nada. It was the kids' bedtime and we still had an hour and a half back home. We decided to cut out losses and hope for inspiration at a later date.

On the way, I wondered if I had ended up bypassing the trail, as Dan did mention that it was labyrinthine, but circular. Did I force the store owner's hand and end up with the first and last pieces? But still, there was no inkling of where to go next. Remembering the UV light mention about that French cache MrToasty told me about, I hauled out the blacklight from my closet and checked the first book on page 49. The page number was circled. I checked the second book. There's an address in Fredericksburg with the following notation:

A=?
+44 207 193
7442
?=

Googling the middle bit gives me Surer Risk's phone number, but I don't know what A=? and ?= mean. I'll go through the books a little more thoroughly later, but in the meantime I've got to catch up on some work.

Anyone have any thoughts?

(And BTW I scored a first edition signed copy of Bret Easton Ellis's Glamorama for $40 at Berkman's Books!!)

Ah, there is more in the first book.

I think next is a self-storage place; there's a unit number. Also a note saying "If all is safe, follow instructions to find me. P.E."

Edit: I need to remember to bring my blacklight, GPS, and faster internet connection next time we go. Laughing

Wherethehell am I gonna plug in a blacklight in my car?

Excellent work! I can't think of who P.E. could be right now, but then again I could use some sleep.

As for blacklight, you might be able to find a cheap blacklight flashlight, LED-based or otherwise, or even the keychain sized 'fake bill detectors.'

Turns out my husband has a portable light to check for pet stains or something. Who knew?

I PMed Dan Corrigan on the VD forum (heh) and he had this to say:

Quote:
Was there anything that gave an indication of what A=? means?

Were there any other random or coincidental elements? I am not surprised they used two books - just like rinsing off a personality / identity. You must have everything there - I can't see these guys risking any more exposure to the public.

Surer have been involved in this from the start. Someone leaked an audio recording of this some time ago, it also mentions Peter Hayder.

P.E: should be Peter Ebersbach or Peter Hayder - mid way through the transformation, very smart...

So this cache was for Peter Hayder - but we have Peter Hayder here at Surer in London. So who is our Peter Hayder, and what was he escaping from in the Eastern Bloc?

There's a member of this group who is in touch with a trustee at Surer - Jock Forsythe. Contact him, and he will help.

So who's in contact with Jock Forsythe?

Man, this is really difficult to do, coming in on the middle of it. I really don't have a lot of time to try to weave through the intrigue to get the right clues. It's a little nutty that they put this cache where it is, and then contacted someone who wasn't actively playing to pick it up with no real clue as to what to do other than ask for a book at the store. At least so far the cache trail has needed a lot more knowledge of what's going on than I have. And I'm terrible with puzzles, to boot.

Have to admit I was enormously frustrated last night. Confused I'm wary about hauling the family back out there and not being able to figure it out.

I messaged him yesterday, so hopefully he'll get in touch before the weekend.

I'm a little hesitant about going back. I'm afraid of wasting an afternoon because I'm not informed enough to get this done.

1. It's a long trip with two kids.
2. I'm not playing, so I don't know everything I should.
3. I'm terrible at puzzles.

Now would be the ideal point in the game where a shadowy figure would contact me and say, "This is how these caches have worked in the past. You might need a compass and a protractor. You'll need to know the names of everyone at Surer Risk. If there's a combination lock, you'll probably find the answer here. Don't forget to take a UV light."

I just feel like I'm heading into the fray totally blind. I want to get the cache, but my goodness, we spent 3 hours driving and 4 hours spinning our wheels the other day!

Someone give me a pep talk. ARG
