Not unless there's a Honolulu near me in Kitchener (not in B.C.) or Toronto, in Ontario, Canada (not California)

It's pretty clear that Sleep of Reason is either in-game or pulling an elaborate gamejack. I'm tending towards in-game.

Quote:
MrTwisty, it's kind of difficult to ask what people think of Hayder because... well...

I've not reported in the last couple of days because there really hasn't been much to report. I am working on a case and it's an interesting one, but at the moment I can't see any links to the business at hand and besides there's the matter of that confidentiality agreement.

But there was one thing yesterday. Surer's big on VOIP, or at least this department is, and so we have an almost-permanent link open to the Zurich office, with a couple of those conference-call base-units around the place. At the other end is Peter Hayder and his department, which sounds like it's about the same size as ours. Which makes it difficult to ask people about what they think of him.

This is what I think may be relevant. Last night (Wednesday, not today) Hayder was on the line for the regular PM debriefing. I think he gets into the office at some ungodly hour like 6AM, so by the time we're packing up in London he's been at his desk for something like 12-14 hours. Yesterday there was someone in the office with him, a voice I didn't recognise—weird European accent, not your basic Swiss, but then Hayder's accent isn't the most identifiable either.

First of all, Hayder asks the departmental secretary to book an advert in the Announcements section of 'the usual national paper' on Friday. He didn't give the text over the phone, but the sec (sweet Australian kid, about 22) behaved like this was completely normal, so it may be something Surer has done before. There was something about 'putting it on the Spencer account'.

After he'd finished that... no, I'm going to hold off on the next bit. I need to think about if this is something I should reveal. An advert is one thing, that's basically public information, but... this is my job now, at least for the moment, and I'm kind of enjoying it, and I don't particularly want it to end because I go public on something I shouldn't.

So we have a national paper (Swiss?), announcements section, on the Spencer account.

Sleep of Reason said that the instruction to place the ad was given to an English speaker, so I think probably it was a British paper. I asked him what he considered a national UK paper and this was the response:

Quote:
National UK papers: The Telegraph, The Times (not the London Times, ever, please), the Financial Times but that's a bit specialist-interest; The Independent; The Guardian. Down a league to the Daily Express and the Daily Mail; and finally into the red-tops, the Sun, the Mirror, the Star and (ugh) the Daily Sport. I'm pretty sure the last four don't have Announcements sections but I'm pretty sure the first five do.

Searching the online stuff for the first five papers, I could only find announcements for these:

http://announcements.telegraph.co.uk/default.aspx
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/court_and_social/announcements/

I didn't see anything from Friday that looked relevant. It might be that we'll need to see a physical copy of the paper and the ad won't be online.

A new member at Violettesdream Forum posted a scan of the attached announcement found in The London Times. Sleep of Reason however said:

So I'm a bit confused, is this the one we were looking for?

Yeah, that's one of the drawbacks of in-game forums. Is SoR a character? Is Pipette? Who do we believe? There needs to be some way to verify information.

Maybe we can get an uF member from the UK to take a look at the actual papers for last Friday. Anyone? Chippy?

If the information is good, I think I would expect the Fan to devote another Tweet and blog post to it. At least that seems to be the modus operandi as of late.

Or possibly a Dan Corrigan post. It's just strange to me that they're not building on the momentum of the first cache, but perhaps they have nefarious evil plots in mind for later down the road. Smile

I would also think they'd want to take advantage of it being E3 this week - not that they would do something at E3 (they are showing it off-site anyway), but all eyes are on video games for a few days.

Seems unlikely it's the announcement posted on the ingame forum... not that I have anything else to offer! There was nothing in Friday's Independent, either in announcements or any other bit. I'll head to the library tomorrow and try and check out the others just in case.

SoR's response to that ad on the IG forum:
Sleep of Reason wrote:
I said "not the London Times, ever, please" because there is no such paper as the London Times. It's the incorrect name that a certain type of American uses for The Times, unable to believe that a non-American newspaper might not follow the American naming protocol. The newspaper is called The Times and it's a national paper, not a London paper. Please.

I've not been able to find a copy of Friday's Times to check if that ad is in there (and I have to say that's a bl88dy awful scan). Will keep looking.
