to honor the almighty DOC

Greetings from the Bayou State of Louisiana!

By way of introduction, I'm a big fan of these sorts of treasure hunts, and I usually post on the forums at tweleve.org. I'm making this post here because this is where the Really Big Brains seem to have congregated for this particular hunt, and I wanted to post some observations I've made over the last couple of weeks.

(I've been somewhat hesitant about doing this. I'm reminded of the old saying, "Be silent and be thought a fool rather than opening your mouth and proving it." Smile )

So here goes nothing....

There's something else going on in this puzzle.

Several weeks ago, before Chapter 2 was released, I noticed that the inscription of the rock from the sliding emblem puzzle of Chapter 1 was composed of the glyphs from the cryptex and deciphered to 'Thou hast solved sum of 9'. That seemed really odd and out of place. It took a lot of work to get that inscription. Imagine my surprise when Chapter 2 was released, and the triangle depicted in the Explorer's Journal for that puzzle had a different arrangement of numbers on it....

...and each side of the triangle totalled '9'.

The clue points out a total for each side of the triangle. On our actual puzzle triangle, the totals are as follows:

Left side = 10. Right side = 10. Bottom = 12. This would be for triangle '9' since its emblem appeared here.

Guys, there are clues scattered through the game that allow us to come up with a similar solution for each numerical emblem.

Each solution is a triangle with a number on each side. They're not hard--they just appear to be really clever. The puzzle author's selection of the emblems to depict his numbers appear to be NOT a random event--there's a reason the '1' is a down arrow, the '3' is a bullseye, the '4' is an X, etc.

1 & 2. The numerical symbols for 1 and 2 are a down arrow and an up arrow consisting of a down triangle and an up triangle. The two arrows are found on the circular slide puzzle from Chapter 1. One arrow is on the black circle and the other arrow is on the white circle. The arrows become up and down as the circles are rotated. Each circle also contains three triangles depicting the three sides of a triangle. The clue from the Explorer's Journal for this puzzle is 'Separate light from darkness'.

This is a puzzle of opposites. White circle/black circle. Light/Dark. Up arrow/down arrow. Up triangle/down triangle.

It's a clue for the front of the packages. You simply count the number of triangles. We 'separate light from darkness'--namely, we do a separate count of the light triangles and the dark ones.

The names of the three cities form the triangle that give us the necessary clue to assign the numbers to the correct sides.

For triangle 2 (the up arrow/up triangles): Left side = THE STRIP (Las Vegas) = 8. Right side = GOTHAM (New York) = 6. Bottom = BIG GUAVA (Tampa) = 8.

For triangle 1 (the down arrow/down triangles): There are 11 down triangles for each of the three packages. Left side = 11. Right side = 11. Bottom = 11.

3. The clues for triangle 3 are found in the Explorer's Journal and the final puzzle of chapter 2--the wall of symbols. The clue in the Explorer's Journal tells us where to look for the answer: 'THREE': PATHS FROM THE BASE OF THE PYRAMID LEAD TO ILLUMINATION. It's a reference to the paths you were supposed to make to solve the final puzzle of chapter 2. You simply count the number of colored triangles along each path--used and unused. The final stop of each path is the actual triangle that is illuminated.

Each path ends on a different side of its target triangle. This is the key to assigning the number to a side.

For instance, if memory serves, the path that begins under the pyramid with the left arrows ends by hitting the target triangle on the bottom. You encounter a total of 11 colored triangles along the way, so you would assign '11' to the bottom of triangle 3.

Triangle 3: Left side = 10. Right side = 12. Bottom = 11.

The end of each path is the triangle that the laser will hit--it's used to assign the numbers to each side of our puzzle triangle.

I think this is the reason the symbol for '3' is a bullseye.

4. The clue for solving triangle 4 is contained within the Explorer's Journal: FOUR WITHIN MAKE 'FOUR'. ONE IS INVERTED. ALL ARE EQUAL. THRICE AND A SCORE. The symbol for 4 is the 'X'. There are four triangles contained within it, and one is indeed inverted. According to our clues, all the sides will be equal, and they will be equal to 'thrice and a score', namely 23.

Triangle 4: Left side = 23. Right side = 23. Bottom = 23.

I don't want to wear out my welcome and bore you with detailed explanations of these others if you think this is in left field. I'd be more than happy to discuss the others if you wish.

Having these triangles with numbers on their sides appears somewhat worthless.

Until I remembered the code on the back of the packages.

Creating these triangles 1 - 9 gives us a total of 27 sides with each side containing a number. And, we have a nice key for 1 - 27 on the back of the packages.

We can number the sides of our new triangles from 1 - 27 in such a fashion that triangle 1 has sides 1-2-3, triangle 2 has sides 4-5-6, triangle 3 has sides 7-8-9, etc. To do this correctly, we would need a clue that gives us the correct order to number the sides. Which side is 1, which side is 2, and which side is 3?

The answer is on the home pyramid.

Chapter 1 = right side, chapter 2 = bottom, chapter 3 = left side.

So, for triangle 1: Right side = 1, bottom = 2, left = 3. Triangle 2: Right side = 4, bottom = 5, left = 6. Triangle 3: right = 7, bottom = 8, left = 9, etc.

In this manner, you can assign 1 - 27 to the 27 sides of our nine triangles.

Then, you would just use the key on the back of the chips packages.

1 = South. 2 = North. 3 = South. 4 = East. Etc.

The final solution to these triangles would be something akin to the following:

Triangle 1: Left side = 11 South. Right side = 11 South. Bottom = 11 North.

Triangle 2: Left side = 8 East. Right side = 6 East. Bottom = 8 South.

Triangle 3: Left side = 10 North. Right side = 12 South. Bottom = 11 North.

Etc.

I came up with a solution for triangles 1 - 9, but there are actually two more symbols in this set, the zero--which is a dot, and the ten, which appears as an hourglass.

Imagine my surprise when the final puzzle was released, and lo and behold, there are a series of little triangles definitively associated with a dot. I now think the clue for triangle 10 comes from the Excavation Site map--the symbol appears there with the jungle pyramid.

In closing, I want to state I'm absolutely certain 'THE ARTIFACT' is the correct solution for the cylinders. My heartfelt congratulations to the ones who figured it out.

I don't know what these triangles might represent. I find it interesting that triangles 0 - 10 make a total of 11 triangles, and each triangle appears to induce three 'shifts' of some sort (11 south, 6 east, 10 north, etc.). If these are correct, even though we have a slide bar on the final puzzle's cylinders to manipulate each cylinder individually, and we have the mechanism to move each cylinder NSEW, I don't think this would operate on the cylinders because the left/right shifts are too high.

If this is information to be carried forward by the finalists, it appears to be too in-depth for what sounds like more of a physical challenge as opposed to a mental one. 'The Artifact' is the correct solution to the final puzzle, that's certain.

So, I don't really know what to make of this other than a fevered imagination. On the surface, it appears logical and makes puzzle-sense. Everything about it deals with 'triangles'.

I wanted to put this out to the Brain Trust for this particular hunt to ruminate over and to let me know what you think.

Attempting to keep the grey cells going,

Doc

Just thought i'd share a pic of the cryptex I had made on the last puzzle night...I was listing translations of the columns and had gone through 2 cans of diet coke without any intentions of making this, but i was stuck for a while and did this when I didn't know where else to go with the puzzle...I was hoping something would stand out, but nothing did.

I wanted to share this with everyone from the beginning. When I saw the very first puzzle on The Quest it reminded me of the original Cryptex design I was fortunate to see up close and personal.

After the online game NBC Treasure Hunters sslug and I went on a physical hunt with some of the members of the online board over at the NBC site. When we arrived, after meeting the other players that decided to meet for this physical hunt we were graced with the sight of a real CRYPTEX. Made by the original designer. We held it in our hands. So we can attest to the unique craftsmanship put into such a fine piece. It is truly a collectors piece.

The designer has a web site where you can own one of these beautiful works of art. And I thought any armchair treasure hunter would love one. It is fully functional as well. So this is really something to own.

Here is Justin's site. Check it out. Every armchair hunter should see these.

I can't decide which color I like the best!

chulo333,
Is the highlight color on the symbols on your cryptex created from the residue left by eating too many Quest?

On the subject of cryptexes I thought I'd point out this really awesome one from The Noble Collection from the DaVinci Code (crappy movie but cool cryptex) HERE

Wow, considering it looks nice and you can change the password at will, that's pretty cheap.

It's a nice trinket. Did you notice tho it's like 5"-closed and the security box is very small. It's $200 and I wonder if it's all aluminum, hand made or toy like. Don't know-can anyone find out?

The Cryptex on the link I gave btw is $250 and check out his specs. Also notice on his site the word Cryptex is a registered tradmark. This is the original cryptex designer I think. Dan Brown who wrote the book (I agree crappy movie) has purchased like five of them.

So BIG difference for just an additional $50. I guess IMHO!

I figure how many times I blow $250 on several items within a couple of months I could have this very cool collectors piece that I can play with and show off. It is fully functional too. BIG difference for only $50. Like I said IMHO.

I know I am gonna purchase one-today! Just thought this forum was a great place to share what I found out.

Here's the back story on the site:
http://www.cryptex.org/h_specs.htm
http://www.cryptex.org/h_about.htm

and the $250 Cryptex:
http://www.cryptex.org/r_home.htm

(I had little time to do the final puzzle. Wireless was in and out. Site would not work well for me. Got frustrated very early. Think I put the final answer in before 2am ET.
snackstrong!
and if I could have added another 6 letters I would have. Razz )

I haven't seen that particular item in person, but I have seen several other products by The Noble Collection (if you want to buy a place in my heart forever you can get me one of their Harry Potter Timeturners Laughing ) and they are extremely high quality items.

I just think it would be cool to store things in a cryptex... no matter what the size.

Ah, I didn't notice that those are Cryptex REPLICAS. I was looking at the hand-crafted ones, which will run you but are beautiful.

If I get one, I'd get it out of solid brass just so I can club someone to death with it. Twisted Evil
