Thanks for the steeple list, chulo333.

As for the events, considering that there are 3 competitors, I think that they might have to play some sort of 'Rock-Paper-Scissors' using real rock, paper and scissors. Or maybe 'Extreme 3-Legged Racing'.

I sent our contact an email a few days ago asking if I could go watch, but no answer from her...

as far as the final competition, my guess is something along the lines of the real world/road rules challenge final competition. Some sort of physical obstacle leg of a race followed by a puzzle that must be solved to move on. Rinse and repeat.

either that or a mountain dew doritos eat off...see who could stand to actually eat those things. Smile

I read that rule after I started playing. My ex is a stuntman/actor, now retired and teaching, but I figured on conning one of our stunt buddies if I got that far....

I am betting it has something to do with driving to the UFO museum to get clues. Heh. Then maybe over to Lake Mead and scuba dive the wreckage of the B-29 that crashed there in 1948 because a UFO blinded them. And the grand finale will take place on a trapeze (while dressed in a big eyed alien suit) during the Circe de Soliel performance at the Luxor.

I sense a theme there.

finalists
physicality

In my opinion there is a modicum of discrimination here, regardless of the outcome of the first to submit. Out of 10 , 7 were deemed not physically able to compete regardless of their finishing times. Also all of this info was not available in the rules. Anyone who is not in top physical shape or young or athletic was immediately disqualified at the start.
Of course if we do them for the challenge it is OK . I only wish there was an even playing field for everyone of any age or ability.

What? Are you kidding? Where did this info come from? What about being able to have a proxy????

Paribanou, exactly where did you get your information from? I don't remember anyone telling me that a 6 foot 185# volleyball player wasn't physically fit enough to compete.

yeah, I'm 28 years old, 5'9 and 165lbs. In pretty good shape and never had any health problems. And my doctor cleared me with no problems for the paperwork they sent us. I think your info is a little off paribanou.

Oh, and Feeble over at steeplemedia announced that he's Travis Hogg. so to add to my list, that's 7 of the 10 finalists

My understanding was that ten people were selected who finished and submitted with the correct answer. The final 3 were not necessarily the first finishers but were chosen after the insurance company had considered the returned paperwork. Dr report, etc.
Setting a game/puzzle up with limited access for other than those who are "fit" seems to be the norm , and I do think this is discrimination.
By having this group to pick from . and taking into account someone might not be able to attend , the "insurers" were able to choose 3 who would have no reason to use a proxy, and therefore probably would not ask to have someone represent them.
Not wanting to get into a big debate about this thing, just some thoughts I have had seeing the outcome of this and a few other puzzles/games slanted to give the sponser control over how the contest ends. Of course it's their money.

I agree with your discrimination theory Peribanou....and just a reminder that FOUR, yes count them: one, two three four! physically fit young men beat me to the site after I posted my semi-complete solution to the David Blaine board, and yet they all left empty handed. This handicapped over 40-ish lady who ended up with poison oak from her efforts found the treasure....prolly because she knew how to solve the REST of the puzzle. Ya think?

Power to the decrepit!!!!!! It is possible to win!!!!!

So yeah, this contest ended up sucking muck because of their desire for exciting "entertainment value". Unless an Unfictioner wins, then it will redeem itself in my eyes.

I want someone to make a contest to win Magnet. Very Happy

Heh. Wink

Info on watching the finale

(Yes, this is a duplicate of my SteepleMedia post...)

Hi, everyone. Thought I'd come out of the shadows to say to Doritos that this was an amazing challenge, and I hope there will be another one! With help, I completed all of the puzzles, though tried to do the last one "on my own," getting creative with an answer of "Luxor Hotel." Best wishes to the finalists!!!!

Found this writeup on the HitContests website. It looks like we'll actually be able to see a replay of the finale, though not until August?

"Doritos: The Quest Finalists
Wednesday 9th of July 2008
Congratulations to Travis Hogg of Austin, Texas, Jim Hutz of Carefree, Arizona, and John Wright of Rock Hill, South Carolina on becoming finalists in Doritos: The Quest online Treasure Hunt. These three competitors were the first three to successfully solve the final puzzle, and will compete in a live final competition in Las Vegas starting July 15th. A month later on August 15th we will be able to view the final competition online. One of these three finalists will win the grand prize of a $100,000 artifact. Jim Hutz was likely one of the finalists of the original Volvo Hunt. Good luck to all."
