[SPOILERS] Who else thought Hud's final scene... ...was really disturbing? Hey all. I've been inactive for a loooong time, but I've been following Cloverfield since it was just a wee lil' teaser trailer. *sniff*
Our little pet ARG has grown up so fast...
I'm all for movie monsters chomping on some puny humans, but something about Hud's death was just...disturbing. I mean, you see MGP lunge at Hud, and the camera is inside MGP's (2nd?) mouth while Hud's getting torn up.
It wasn't so much the imagery as the sounds. Hud didn't die immediately. You can hear him yelling almost pleadingly as he's getting chewed up.
It was like
*lunge*
*squishy biting*
Pleading:*Ohh, nooo! Oh pleee-*gurgle*"
*bones snapping*
*pre-vomiting noises*
*more snapping*
Poor Hud. He didn't deserve to be munched for his sweet, sweet Slusho.
Edit: Also, I'm extremely pleased with how MGP turned out to look. He's so unique and scary. He's got a nice roar, too.
When you see him looking down at you, I was pretty genuinely scared of that thing. First thought was "Holy crap, that thing is scary, and he's going to eat me."

I just didn't understand why this was the only time MGP was not getting hit with bombs. There are planes zooming by and they're ignoring him/her.

Keep in mind that the other planes were probably busy pulling back in preparation for the BIG strike, and so didn't have time to worry about three people that they probably couldn't see anyway.

I didn't mean Rob & Beth ( i know the plane can't see or help them) I was talking about MGP. You can hear bombing going on (I think) but not in the park where HUD gets it.
MGP is in the open and the planes are ignoring he, she or it.
To me it looked like they were going into the city, not getting out of it, because that's the way MGP came out from.

Maybe there were busy leveling the rest of the city due to the parasites?

If you watch the screen closely, you can see the compression tremors as MGP comes into the park. Most of what you heard (5 times seen) is MGP strolling in the park look for the HUD DOG stand.

I have to admit that Matt Reeves did an effective job at really driving the point home that people die, no matter how much you like them.
I think there's a consensus that Marlena and Hud were the two most likable characters in the whole movie, yet they met the worst fates.

Does anyone else find it strange that he wasnt EATEN? Why would MGP not eat him? why chew on him an spit him out? It doesnt make sense.
Also his face seemed largley un-harmed which you wouldnt think it would be after being in a mouth full of 2 foot long razors. (exagerating MGP mouth details. Or am I...)

I too had noticed the rather nasty sounds as Hud is being munched on. I get the distinct impression that Hud was bitten in half, his upper body lying outside the gum line. The sound was very gruesome, and seemed horrifically painful. I think this event was done and in this way to seal our desire to see MGP die. The whole 'it's a baby' theory allowed for sympathy for the monster, but when Hud gets it that pretty much goes away.

I think it has been expressed around the forums that it might have been a "test chew" more than an eating. Some animals (like sharks) will bite something to see what it is. I mean, MGP does take a long time looking/smelling/whatever Hud before chomping down.
As for Hud VS Marlena on who got it worse... They both suffered. Which really sucks. I think that is another prop I give to the movie, though, because they were able to use the fake documentary style with "normal" characters and still get us to really feel for them even though we barely know them.

From my point of view...the Hud scene is equivalent to the alien chestburster scene from the first ALIEN movie.
It stayed (and continues to stay) with me.

I too, assumed that Hud was in pieces. All we see is his head and maybe upper torso. But i was under the impression that it had been established early on that MGP in fact, ate people. Didn't Marlena say that early on? something to the effect of: "It was eating people. It ate people." After of course, she first eye-witnessed it. Unless I misunderstood.
