I know. It's rather sad, isn't it? Perhaps I should change my username to "Lady Babble."

Your reply reminds me of the US version of "What Not to Wear." Stacy on that show is always saying, "Shut up!" I have to say that I'm a little more fond of the US version of the show, because the two people on that version seem less cruel.

I never did buy the "cruel to be kind" idea, especially considering that the phrase originates (unless there's a previous version) from Hamlet, spoken right after he has accidentally killed Polonius. I don't think Hamlet at that point was exactly the sanest person on the planet...

Babble, babble...

Suggested equipment for shard-hunting
Advice from a letterboxer and sometimes geocacher

I don't go geocaching that much these days, but I do letterbox frequently. There are some similarities, so I'm going to suggest some equipment to bring. I'll add to this later if I think of anything else.

Necessary: Cassette player and camera

Whatever you would normally take on a hike.
(Water, bandaids, etc.)

Bring a walking stick or two. Walking sticks are good for poking around in leaves, needles, and crevices, and not getting hurt by snakes, insects, or poison ivy. Often, you can feel the difference between the surrounding piles/crevices and the cache itself. Just be careful not to poke too hard and break the container. (Spoken from experience.)

Gardening gloves--I'm always hurting my hands when I don't wear gloves, either scratching them on an unexpected twig or pushing my hand into crevices. Also good for protecting you from plantlife that is poisonous.

Writing implements and paper--For on-site observations.

One copy of the coordinates/satellite map per searcher. If one person is farther ahead than the others, you don't have to find them to see about where the cache is hidden. And sometimes, someone loses their map.

Russell_k and carmenmiranda, please verify
What are the coordinates for #13

ancalime wrote:
I've made a Google Map of all the locations. Number 13 has two different locations listed (the decimal is not the same as the ddmmss), so I've included them both (though it looks like there's just a mixup with 15).

I'm trying to update the wiki. Could one of you tell me please what coordinates you used to find shard #13? As ancalime says, there's a discrepancy between the decimal and long/lat versions.

Thanks!

EDIT: For now, I'm assuming that they should be (51.521683, -2.418550), since the map picture for #13 matches those coordinates.

Well, I've been reading up on what each of the shards is named, and I've discovered that they are just the same idea from a different culture's mythology.

So "Summerland" is heaven for Wiccans, and Argard is heaven for the Norse.

I think it was because I was equating titles that I noticed that the plastic strips for 13 and 16 at least wold work if you put in the names of other shards.

Oh, and I think the plastic tape for shard 9 might be:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Tir na nog and Sparrow of Gup running right after each other.

And a couple of other things have occurred to me.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I think that the three keys may be the mscape solves, and the 16 shard names go on that web diagram. It's also possible that the names that are included on the plastic strips in each box tell us that there is a connecting line from the shard's name to the whichever names are in the box. So there are connecting lines running from shard 16 to the shards for Xibalba and Minatar.

I'm writing a speculation post about have the whole tree diagram fits together. One thing I will say here is that
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I think that the tree is Ygdrasil.

ooo, clever!

Nighthawk, I think what she's saying is:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The letters on each strip of tape are the first and last letters of some of the names of the Gatekeepers. The letters on the tapes ARE separated by spaces. so E L = Ereshkigal, which is Original 6. X A would be Xibalba, etc.

Really excellent work!

I'm not sure how the letters from Shard 9 fit in, unless CERTAIN PEOPLE ARE MOLES and have deliberately led us astray.

heh.

Thank you for explaining that, carmenmiranda. I was so tired that I missed entirely that I hadn't really explained it very well myself.

However--your comment should actually be addressed to Nighthawk, dear.

I finally got confirmation from everyone today that they wanted to go, only to discover that the event is now fully booked Sad

Bristol is a bust. Sorry.

So we got one person in San Diego. Nobody in LA, Italy, Netherelands...

I could get to any Shards in LA. I live in the southeastern area of Mississippi, and while I don't have a car of my own, I do have several friends that Geocache, and they wouldn't mind bringing me anywhere within Louisiana, Mississippi or possibly Alabama. So if any shards pop up here...

I just signed up today, solved all of the Wendy case puzzles with relatively no help, and just got caught up on all the shards. The only puzzles that really stumped me and that I needed to check the forum with was the Sudoku puzzle (which I had already figured it had something to do with the 9x9 grid, but I never could get it to line up x.x) and the Error page puzzles, which I had accidentally read the answers when looking for hints. :/

Funny what you can do given a day.

bummer about harmonize being fully booked! I might just go down for a nosy as it's not like I have to go far...

So, back to the shards

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
could it be that Sam is Wendy's child? Or at least a future relative as he talks about the war that destroys this world (shard 9), that he's come back in time (shard 13) & he asks Wendy to help him be a man (shard 16) and Harry says the evidence he has comes from the future - so has Wendy been taken to stop this evidence being sent

Also is there anything on The British Interplanetary Society site that looks noteworthy (apart from the fact that I could apply to be an astronaut!!) & needs following up.

We know that the shards started arriving with Harry in 1943, then every 5 years & then more often - is there any significance to these dates?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
And is there anything on the amsat website that could be useful?

Lots of thoughts but nothing really useful there I don't think!

That's "LA" as in "Los Angeles, California"... Smile

Unless you *really* want to drive that far. Wink

Right. D'oh. How could I have missed that?

Well, offer still remains on these three southern states, if any of the others pop up here. I do have some friends who live in Cali, though, not sure how close they are to LA, and if they'd be willing to travel, but I could see if they'd be up to it.
