In regards to not having a GPS system, neither me nor carmen has a proper GPS unit so we will be guiding ourselves there using nothing but the tree locations on google maps Wink

Just make sure the map looks accurate...in my area the satellite footage features things like a water park that's been gone for about 5 years now! Very Happy

Palo Alto/San Jose is commutable from San Francisco. I used to do the commute myself. I'll do a quick check with my friends to see if anyone fancies a little trip. They're mostly geeks like me, so odds aren't too bad.

I do have GPS on my phone, but I don't know how accurate it is. In other words, it might be giving me the GPS coordinates of the nearest mobile tower or something. So Russell and I won't be COMPLETELY lost, but let's just say I wouldn't place money on us finding more than one.

One might even be a challenge!

I have been assuming everyone received this email, but just in case here it is. It looks like those of you in the UK without an mscape device can get a loaner for this game. I responded to the email in spite of the "meta" tag simply in light of TINAG. They did respond saying they were unsure if they could do anything for those of us in the US but they would "look into it.":

Hewlett Packard Labs Research.

Do you enjoy solving puzzles? Are you happy to help with games
research? In that case you might be interested in a new game by
Licorice Film called "The Sky Remains" (www.theskyremains.com) which
will launch soon. The Sky Remains will combine interactive Alternate
Reality Gaming elements with mscapes (www.mscapers.com) and the thrill
of geocaching and treasure hunting.

We are looking for people who are interested in playing "The Sky
Remains" and are willing to be part of a research study to track the
experience of using the community web site and playing games over a
period of a month. Participants will receive a £50.00 voucher for
their involvement for which they will be required to keep a short log
of their experiences and be interviewed by the researchers.
Participants will also be loaned an iPAQ for a month so that they can
play the mscape games.

If you are interested in helping out and taking part in the research
study then please email skyremainsresearchSPLATgmail.com. We are
interested in people of all age ranges (over 14) preferably living in
the UK.

Shard 9

Eventually, I managed to get everything scanned in.

----

Thursday 1sy May 2008

I started the hunt as I soon as got the train home; a quick bus trip and I was in the correct vicinity on a cycle path.

TomTom is crap so my GPS took ages to get a fix while I nervously smiled at dog walkers and cyclists who looked at me like I was scanning for a downed NASA black op satellite.... or about to kidnap their dog.

After getting a GPS fix, I quickly realized that the location was off the cycle path I was on, so I went crashing off into the trees. Great! Obviously now it looks like I'm about to "pinch one off" in the woods.

Had a "DOH!" moment when I left the stand alone GPS in my backpack.... that I'd left leaning against a tree... and couldn't figure why the coordinates weren't updating.

Eventually found a weird "Blair Witch" hide thing near the given location not sure if it was the PM's or totally random, but a dig around revealed nothing. That's when I spotted the "Hobbit" tree about 30 yards south of the hide.

I found Shard 9 loosely covered amongst the roots of the tree. Inexplicably, I now felt incredibly anxious, so high-tailed it out of there before some bigger boys beat me up and stole my shard.

----

I forgot my camera, but used my crappy phone to video the find, apologies for the shaky camera work
