Dark Knight Article
April 20th Event

Moved from Press and Analysis - Gup

Quote:
The latest instalment of the Dark Knight viral campaign, run by 42 Entertainment has been thrilling, captivating and somewhat controversial according to members of various online communities who have been following the dramatic story online.
It all started when people in thirteen different cities were given co-ordinates for a location and a time to meet…the supplier of these details being the infamous Joker.
Although I would have loved to have been there, it was logistically impossible, so I plumped to be the online eyes and ears of players at the location. People at the live event were called COTG (Clowns on the Ground) and people online were referred to as Oracles.
Due to the lack of involvement from the popular alternate reality community, Unfiction, I decided to leap over from my perch onto the shoulder of Super Hero Hype Forums. They were fully organised and deeply immersed in the world of Nolan's Batman, and it wasn't long before board member Mr. E Nigma took it upon himself to head a team of Oracles from the forum to help their COTG in London. Phone numbers exchanged and plans were made, most Oracles were in contact with a COTG friend, and throughout the event which lasted from 21:00 GMT, for approximately an hour, we were told what was happening by them and we told them where to go, by answering cryptic commands on the WhySoSerious website, which appeared dead on nine o'clock.
Despite the breakdown of organisation at online 'Mission Control', and everyone going crazy, we managed to work together to figure out where the COTG had to go, and then we had to use the answers of the riddles to open a safe which was hidden behind a vandalised portrait of Woodrow Wilson on the website, revealing a note which contained further direction for our clowns.
42 Entertainment seemed to have done well with this on the whole, although it did seem that the London riddles were harder than the ones in the US…not stereotyping are we 42? Another problem was having people covered in Joker makeup running around major cities did not seem very amusing to some authorities; in Dallas police refused to let COTG into an area where they needed to find the answer to a riddle, this was seemingly down to 42 Entertainment's failure in letting the relevant people know about the event and it's nature.
The reward for COTG was getting to see the new Dark Knight trailer (and being given a joker card), and those who saw it left with a feeling of amazement and joy. Those who were participating online had been left with much to be desired; being rewarded with nothing, not even confirmation that their involvement for the evening was over. This left an empty confusion in our heads and a slight resentment that we ended up doing most of the work for…well, nothing.
42 Entertainment really should have taken the feelings of all players when considering the ending of the event, as they could have easily prevented this anticlimax by giving something to the Oracles. We thought opening a safe would give us something worth opening a safe for.
Overall the night was a success, and people bonded over the wonder that is alternate reality gaming, but this episode has left some fans feeling that their trust has been betrayed, and that is not something players take lightly. Let us hope that 42 can continue to provide entertainment and learn from this mistake in the future.

Over and out,
Bailey Masterson.

It's not that uF isn't involved, it's just SHH lately, has beat us to all the goodies. Wink I know a couple people cross post here to try to let us know what's going on, but the lack of sharing information really hinders game play. So I respectfully disagree with your assessment.

Totally agree

I don't know why people are saying that they are organized over at SHH.

When I try to read some theories or ideas or anything over there for that matter it takes me 10 minutes to sift throught the bickering before i find actual facts

I'm not trying to put them down but it just seems very childish and un-organized.

We need to rise above them for the next challenge.

I would argue that compared to SHH, the standard UF players have been very uninvolved. That isn't a complaint or a criticism, in fact I find it sort of fascinating to see an arg draw in such a different audience.

Any news on new missions yet? Or any leads other than happy trails and sitting ducks?
