[SKY][DISTORTION PUZZLE #7] (solved)

I'm starting this new thread since everyone seems to be stuck here.

Here's the link:
http://www.wendyspage.name/samtrapped.html

And the latest hint:
Quote:
The DISTORTED page seems to features a Trapezoid Transposition With a NUMERICAL KEY. You may then need to dig deeper into the errors on Wendy's website.

THINGS OF NOTE:

1. The blue puzzle squares match the blue squares at the bottom, indicating that this is where the answer lies. So we need to figure out how to fill in the puzzle to get this.

2. There are the same number of letters in the 5-letter words as there are in the puzzle, indicating that we probably want to use them to fill in the puzzle.

3. The name of the puzzle is "distortion," which is some kind of hint.

4. There are numbers above three of the letters in the word "distortion", telling us that we probably need some numbers associated with the letters in order to solve it.

5. There are 10 letters in the word "distortion," and one of the numbers above the letters is a 10, indicating that each letter gets a number.

6. There are only 9 groups of 5-letter words, so this doesn't match.

7. There are 9 blue boxes.

8. There are 10 "columns" if you follow the arrow, and each "column" starts above a letter in the word "distortion".

Rows Slid over

Someone made a suggestion that we slide the rows over as per the arrow. I made a rough sketch of this with the word "distortion" entered in the lower row, and the leftover letters.

But "D" isn't in the choice of letters.

Also it suggests a substitution, but there are two values for "I"?!?

I'm stumped here.

It says that we need to dig deeper into the errors in order to get our numerical key. This could mean a number of things--if we're looking for a numerical key, it could be the error numbers themselves (404, etc).

It could also mean the numerical key can be obtained by looking at either the color codes or perhaps the weird colored letters thrown in there:

color-2: fttsdnS_eb_aD
color-3: _
color-4: r
color-5: s
color-6: s
color-7: t
color-8: c

Overall order is:
fttsd_rsstncS_eb_aD
222223567282222222
STYLE RGB VALUES HEX VALUES
color-0: 4, 2, 4 040204
color-1: 252, 254, 252 FCFEFC
color-2: 252, 250, 252 FCFAFC
color-3: 244, 246, 244 F4F6F4
color-4: 4, 6, 4 040604
color-5: 172, 174, 172 ACAEAC
color-6: 36, 38, 36 242624
color-7: 196, 198, 196 C4C6C4
color-8: 60, 58, 60 3C3A3C

From wikipedia's definition of transposition:

Quote:
In informal language, a transposition is a function that swaps two elements of a set.

Oops. I was looking at the image below yours where someone already extracted the word "distortion".

You can read about transposition ciphers here:

http://www.ahazu.com/papers/lanaki/lesson16.php

We need to identify the path the cipher takes through the original text to result in the 5-letter sets we're given.

As for the error codes, not all of them have the error number attached, maybe we should be looking specifically at the ones that do or the ones that don't?[/url]

The ones without the HTTP status codes attached don't have an HTTP status code, as far as I can tell.

i think you are definitely on to something there. That sounds like the right path. If we knew which column was number 1, we could get 3 lines of the message.

so what order are the letters in distortion??

Alphabetically...

DIINOORSTT

That *would* make "I" 2 and 3, and "T" 10...?!?

*EDIT*
HOLY CRAP!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Sorting "distortion" alphabetically, I get the following sequence:

1 2 8 9 5 7 10 3 6 4

Then replacing the characters, filling the rows in that order, I get:

LHPSYW
NAOMTE
ENROHA
VYTRIN
EOAESD
RUNII
KWTM
NIT
OL
W

...or...

WEANDY THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU WILL NEVER KNOW

Could that be a typo? Did I miss something? Someone confirm...

The key for the puzzle

The numerical key:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I think you're making this too complicated here. The key, it seems to me, is that you assign numbers to DISTORTION in alphabetical order. That puts the numbers all in the right place. For instances with repeated letters, you put the numbers in left to right (the first I is 2, the second I is 3).

See the attached graphic. It ain't pretty (since I did it in a simple text program), but you get the idea.

I think we'd then have to split the word up into two five-letter pieces or what have you.

EDIT: Crud, you posted before I could get my graphic set up, Nighthawk! Of course, I *just* managed to get back to work here. Grumble...

Seriously, though, EXCELLENT WORK!

Rockin'! Way to go Nighthawk! I was getting there, but I really was making it too complicated.
