Esperanto study group Speak it before the Olympics start Since a lot of people are considering learning Esperanto now, I think it would be fun to do so together. We could practise with foreign FTLR players, share our experiences, apply what we learn to IG Esperanto texts and search for meanings we may have missed. And since Esperanto was designed to be really easy, I am confident that it's possible to become conversational in it (and beyond the stage of needing textbooks) before the Olympics start, without having to commit a lot of time.
So I went ahead and created a special section in the Lernu forums that we can use for studying and I found some experienced language tutors to assist us free of charge. Lernu itself offers great multimedia courses for free and at a relaxed pace of one lesson per week (everybody studying it whenever he has time; no classroom times) it will be no problem at all to achieve our goal.
Are you up for it? Please sign the student list in the topic "Studsesio 1..." at http://www.lernu.net/komunikado/forumo/forumo.php?f=27 . I will invite players from foreign-language FTLR groups as well and in a few weeks we will hopefully have solved our communication issues.

I want to participate. I don't understand how to sign up, though. I've been doing a little beginner course over there so I'm registered at the site. . . .

Yes you did, Jasper, thanks In order to sign up, you have to have a free account with Lernu (which is required so you can follow the courses anyway) and then click the "Reply" link at the top of a post. I think the link could be more obvious, but many people found it already.
There's no need to be there on Wednesdays - Wednesdays would just be the official start of the studying week, the day when we officially start tackling a new lesson. People can still study and discuss whenever they want. If it's a big thing for you, we can move that day to Thursdays.

What I have learned so far: I'm bad at spelling in both English and Esperanto!
It's really fun though. Too bad I've yet to apply this much energy to learning Spanish, which I need daily at work, or French and Japanese, which I studied at school.

It's great that so many people joined in.
Jasper, very soon spelling Esperanto won't be a problem for you anymore (can't say the same for English though). In Esperanto, every sound can only be spelled one way. Hence, if the speaker pronounces words clearly and you listen closely enough, a spelling bee would be a joke.

You underestimate my poor poor spelling skills.
But thanks for helping with this!

You're welcome. Esperanto has been a big enrichment in my life, so I try to share. In order to get better at spelling Esperanto, do the flash exercise at http://en.lernu.net/lernado/ekzercoj/flash/prononco/index.php . Levels 1 and 2 are too easy, just to get used to the sounds I guess, but levels 3 and 4 will help you a lot. Remember that you should not have trouble spelling an Esperanto word even if you have never seen it before.

Yeah that one isn't obvious for an English speaker. Ĵ (jx) sounds like French J (as in "je t'aime") or the sound in English "pleasure". Ĝ (gx) sounds like there's an additional D sound at the beginning, like English "giant".

word of the day- would we ever need this?
PROKRASTI
