Oh no I stopped getting email updates on this thread for some reason! Just caught up... I never got anything else after the first email reply about the Chef position from Annie Goldstein. I skimmed the last 15 pages... saw that some people are getting something from her about a survey... did I miss a step?

Poor Nate. Never date in the office, especially your boss.

She's a user (or she better have a really good reason for breaking his heart).

Meanwhile, Annie's been busy typing (and probably cutting and pasting) a bunch of emails.

Hi HL,

Thanks for your note. I must say, I'm surprised by the number of
applicants for the Executive Chef position.

I'm afraid that we've temporarily put the position on hold, until the
kitchen is remodeled to...everyone's complete satisfaction.

That being said, we still have some ways to keep the process moving forward.
Could we ask you to fill out a preliminary employment questionnaire? It should be up on the website within the next day or two.

Again, the new ad campaign (and press) have generated a ton of buzz...
I don't think I've seen the top of my desk in a week...so thanks again
for your patience, as well as your continued interest in Holomove.

Regards,

Annie Goldstein
Senior Recruiter.

Guess we have to keep an eye on the holomove.com website (too bad something there stops it from loading on my home computer - I think it's the sound player).

First line of each looks like it's a keyboard transpo. One to the left on each character gives...

Quote:
1) shinran shonin email

2) casualty list number two

Doesn't work with the long strings, though.

ETA: Shinran Shonin. Doubt he had an email, though...

Well in light of this new info it's worth bringing back this excellent spec from earlier in the thread:

Were talking about this in IRC actually, there's a statue of Shinran Shonin near that street corner. He founded a sect of Buddhism in Japan. The statue came from Hiroshima, having survived the atomic bomb that destroyed the city. The church the statue is in front of held an event in honor or Shinran's b-day, as well as the Buddhist holiday Magha Puja today.

So, Duke Ellington's address and this statue of Shinran Shonin are within a block of each other....

Shinran fits with the first portion of the email RK sent out, as posted a few pages back -- He has a statue just about at Riverside and Duke Ellington Blvd. So we seem to have closed in on that one - and if logic follows, 1365 may be a casualty list of sorts.

No idea what it _means_ though. (Shinran has a very interesting history if you do a quick read up on him where he realized the monastary he spent 20 years at was full of corruption adn greed and set out to find himself again)

1,365 could be a flat number, block 1 flat 365

or maybe a hotel room. Floor 1, Room 365

Interesting, but maybe useless information:

I Googled "1365 deaths" to try to correlate "casualty list number 2" with our RK email, and got this- Rudolf IV, Duke of Austria. Died in 1365- probably nothing. Still.

The lovable mousekinn found that WWII was 1365 days long.

There were 103 years between Shinran's death(1262) and 1365. Puzzling.

As for the text that hasn't been deciphered, it doesn't appear to be any simple letter subs, not a Caesar box, not a cryptogram.

Coded Message

I think the message from the picture just confirms what has already been speculated about on this board. RK's email points us to:

1. Shinran Shonin
2. Battle of Yser, May 17, 1915

What these two have in common is the devastating use of a new military technology. The statue of Shinran survived Hiroshima. The events at Yser in May 1915 were part of the Second battle of Ypres, which is famous for marking the first widespread use of chemical warfare by the German army in WWI.

[Cue spooky music.] RK* may be telling us that Dr. Gough's technology is being developed for military use. Who could have ever predicted such a development!

Of course, none of that tells us what to do next. Oh well.

*edit: originally said "AJ"
