Although metalcore is by far my fav genre, i will be the first to say that there are WAY too many shitty bands within it.
Like i've said before, my fav are the more talented of the metalcore bands (all that remains, august burns red, unearth, etc.).
As for the rave scene, i agree. The TRANCE scene, however, is full of amazing dj's. Stuff like armin van buuren and markus schultz is amazing.
Lastly, buckethead is good...but certainly not the best. One of the best under-rated guitarrists is dino cazares. He is absolutely 100% legit, though isn't nearly as recognized as he should be.

What about drummers? Who do you think is the best?

Did you ever notice that there are like seven words you can use in a metalcore, or screamo band now a days. Funeral, Autumn, Ashes, Die (or some form of the word death), Fall, buried, lies, and there are like one or two more.
My band would be called "As I die dying" or Beneith the Funeral of a Autumn Death, Lies in the Ashes of a Buried Friend" That shit is hot.

I remember when i looked at ozzfest a few years ago and saw bury your dead and it dies today...all i thought of is "holy shit they are getting even LESS creative...how is that even possible??"

Though i must say, even though it dies today has every piece of a shitty metalcore band in their arsenal (emo lyrics, hair over one eye, 72 breakdowns per song, terrible band name), catiff choir is still a pretty legit cd. And the singer knows how to pen lyrics, that's for sure.

Agreed. Dino is the fuckin man! Thank god Divine Heresy kicked out that lame ass hardcore singer. As far as drummers, since we're talkin Fear Factory, Raymond is a machine. Also Mastodon has an insane drummer, llots of creativity. But possibly my favourite right now is Gene Hoglin. That fat man can fuckin play! haha

Divin heresy kicked the singer out? Didn't know; suits me, he wasn't very good. Their drummer is pretty damn fast.
Have you heard dino's solo on The Dagger by Roadrunner United? Holy hell, it's so good. A lil short, but jams so many notes into that time.

I'm used to band forums where some little whiny asshole will jump in and say "joey jordison" or "travis barker" when asked who the best drummer is. Weird to actually hear a good name or two pop up in here Smile

It Dies are to suck in my mind. They just follow the metalcore manual, and bore me. I gave them a chance. It's so sad, I checked my iPod and there's so much 'scream verse-sing chorus' left. Have to start making big time cuts. And it's getting much closer to As I Lay Dying getting the chop.

But I will say I love Bury Your Dead. It's very simple music, but effective. It's total bonehead metal-hardcore, but it's nothing I would call metalcore. All 'grunt' lyrics (a little singing on the new disc, not bad though), very little melody whatsoever, but it's just so crushing. Straight forward heavy with no bullshit filler. They're lows are fucking LOW. They have no misconceptions about what they are (and that's more than I can say about Throwdown).

And ya, metal-core/screamo band names are really getting on my nerves. It's like you have to have an entire sentence as your fucking name now. (The Shades Of Bullet Hearts in the Seas Of Dying Memories) Shit like that. Blows my mind. Just call yourselves 'The (somethings)' if you're having trouble coming up with a name.

And I'd also like them to stop throwing pop culture references in their song titles. It's getting old. On that note, the As I Lay Dying singer has an Arnold Schwarzenegger themed cd coming out with song titles like "It's Not A Tumor". Seriously. That doesn't make the songs any less lame.

The band is great. Love their tunes. The drummer is a beast. But when that big dude tries to sing 'oh man, next track, shit he's doing it again!'. haha.

And ya, I love the hell out of that Roadrunner disc. Pretty much every song is great. And it's the only thing that keeps me from hating Matt Heafy. Trivium got REAL lame after 'The Ascendency' and anyone who disagrees surely plays dungeons and dragons in the parents basement while listening to them. hahah

But that compilation is incredible. I always find a new song to be my favourite every time I hear it. Rob, Dino, Joey and Matt are really great song writers. Just a shame Burton C. Bell couldn't be on that disc.

Joey is a great drummer though, despite the Slipknot kids' lack of knowledge. And the Roadrunenr album proves he can do a lot more than that too. Kinda like Dave Grohl mid-90's, everyone's like 'Holy shit, this dude can play guitar and sing too???' haha. Call me gay if you want, but I really like the track Joey wrote for the Glassjaw singer on that album. He easily had the most versitilty of all the 4 songwriters in that project.

I'll take your word on that and check em out a lil' more. Just shuffling through the Meat Puppets catalogue right now. Trying to figure what I like out of it. Seems like something that'll really grow on me.

God only knows how many time I'll post that link. (EDIT: It'll be empty for a week, I'm going on a vacation!)

But that's my recently listened to for all the time. At this specific moment it's The New Pornographers.

But yeah, dude, listen to The Pixies. For real. One of my top bands ever. If you're just going to download some shit, I'd recommend "Gigantic", "Here Comes Your Man", and "Nimrod's Son". Probably their most popular songs, and definitely not their best, but a good representation.

Also, Meat Puppets? Hell yes. I just recently came upon the No Joke demos. So good. As a matter of fact, I need to listen to those all the way through, thanks for reminding me.

That version of Chemical Garden is killer...

I had to jump back in here after the question of best guitarist / drummer popped up..

Guitarist: It makes me sad that John Petrucci isn't getting the respect he deserves around here. Razz

Also, Joe Satriani deserves to be mentioned.

Drummer: two words... Mike Portnoy.

Bury your dead is absolutely terrible. All the bands that went the copycat route of hatebreed and terror (throwdown, bury your dead, full blown chaos, et.) are boring as hell. And throwing a breakdown into your song every 20 seconds or so doesn't help.
I'm actually really surprised to hear you say that you like bury your dead but you hate pop culture referenes in the same post. Bury your dead are the kings of that. They have an entire CD whose track names are tom cruise movies for God's sake.

Don't get me wrong, i love slipknot. And i think joey is a great drummer. But he's not the best by a longshot. He definitely does have the most versatility. I would've liked to see roadrunner use Adam Dutkiewicz (of kse) instead of heafy. I like heafy, but he's way too inexperienced. Dutkiewicz is THE jack of all trades. The guy can do anything.

Portnoy is legit. I have a hard time giving input on the best drummer, because of the genre that i feel confined within. I mean, i can give you some of the best within deathcore/death metal, but that isn't necessarily the best overall.
