I got bored of August Burns Red. I do like their cover of Carol Of The Bells though. But as far as their own stuff, there isn't much that seperates it from the rest of the metalcore lot. Technically great players I'm sure, but the songwriting never stuck out for me. In fact, this has inspired me to delete As I Lay Dying from the iPod. If I'm gonna trash metalcore, I might as well mean it.

Currently Listening To: Metallica - Escape (again). haha. Fuckin' great song.

I understand as i lay dying. I mean, they've matured way past starting every song in the same key like they did on Frail Words Collapse and Shadows are Security, and i personally love em to death, but they do follow the same generic pattern most metalcore bands do.
August burns red, on the other hand, i disagree with you 100% on. Unless your standard is mastodon or some other prog-math-metal band, august burns red doesn't follow the standard at all. Maybe on a few songs on Thrill Seeker, but definitely not on Messengers. Plus they don't sing about the normal "waaa my girlfriend dumped me so let my blood tears fall upon autumn's grave." Their songs actually have meaning.
As for metallica, i haven't been able to listen to them since the whole band went fucking psychotic in the late 90s/early 00s. Honestly, just hearing the stupid shit they were bitching about and then hearing st. anger....i can't even listen to ride the lightning/black album any more. A pity actually...

That's rough man. I will never let anything ruin my enjoyment of the first 4 Metallica albums. Once they started up with the Load's they were a completely different band for me and luckily I've been able to isolate the 2 eras so I can still enjoy the first.

As for As I Lay Dying, I thoroughly examined the 2 albums I have. Shadows are Security got the cut, but the new one I actually enjoy parts of. Listening to the 2 back to back I can really appreciate the difference between them. Ocean Between Us has a much more thrashy sound and I'm not immediately bored with every song 10 seconds in like the last record. Besides, Shadows had guest vocalist such as Throwdown and Atreyu if I'm not mistaken. That's a red flag. haha. But had the songs delivered any sort of originality I would've kept it.

And for August Burns Red, I'll give it another chance. I think it's mostly their name that pisses me off. Very generic metalcore gayness. haha. Plus I'm sure they're bangs hang in front of one eye and they wear hoodies with flowers and skulls on them, etc etc. haha. But I'll try em out again.

Ya, I really hate metalcore fashion. All these bands look just as emo as the emo bands.

Yeah Oceans is years above Shadows. Even though i still like Confined. For the record, they didn't have the singer of atreyu...throwdown and some equally terrible band.
Yes ABR does have a very terrible name (they probably thought of it while they were young...can't really bash em for that). And they DO look like a bunch of mallcore posers. But didn't you say you liked norma scene and/or the chariot? They're the kings (i use the term "kings" lightly....should be "queens") of that. The last time i saw ABR live with Suicide Silence, Darkest Hour, and Unearth they were dressed normally. Maybe because they were playing with actual good metalcore bands that stuck true to the genre instead of the normal wannabe bands they usually tour with.

Oh, those lame singers don't do guest spots on Shadows? Never noticed before but wikipedia listed a bunch of guest singers on that album. I really did try to like that one. But after listening through it again I just find it so boring.

Don't really have much of an opinion on the Chariot. I know there's one EP I like but I can't remember which one. I do like Norma Jean, but I mainly just mean O' God the Aftermath. Haven't heard much from the newest album and I'm not that big on... whatever the debut was called. I can definitely imagine them dressing mallcore. haha. Saw them at sounds of the underground back in 2005, can't remember what they were dressed like but they put on a surprisingly good show for that type of music. Most bands that sound anything like them play like shit when live.

Darkest Hour and Unearth are pretty good shit too. Though both bands come dangerously close to boring metalcore sometimes.

Trying out ABR again now.

August Burns Red's 'The Messengers'

First song: Not bad, nothing special. Predictable chord progression.
Second song: My head started bobbing but I felt guilty about it. haha. When it's all done it's a pretty bland metalcore track.
Third song: Take out the weird lead notes and the breakdown in this one sounds exactly like the last song. I'm gonna call this song 'Breakdown with Lead Notes'. Meh, nothing has surprised me yet.

This track by track is starting to sound really douchebagy. Not tryin to be a dick, I really want the rest of the tracks to blow my mind.

Forth Song: This one just sounds like the others. Oh look, a breakdown.
Fifth song: Is this the single? It must be. There's melody. Hahaha. This one's more memorable than the others just for the fact that there's more than 3 notes in it. Oh look, a breakdown. haha. Still, not a fan.
Sixth song: Sounds just like the others. Oh look, a breakdown.

Seriously, I'm really trying not to sound like a dick. This is just very mediocre so far. God I'm bored.

Seventh song: Same.
Eighth song: Same. I'm bored.
Ninth song: Wow, this actually starts differently. Not bad. Then at about 30 seconds it just falls back into the regular shit. Damn, I had high hopes for this one. Oh, a slower bridge. Aw, it just led to more of the same shit again. This song keeps teasing me with variety then snatching it away.
Tenth song: Same as ever. Oh, a breakdown.
Eleventh song: Somehow they've managed to make every song on the album sound the same. Even their 'epic' closing song. The only difference is it's longer and there's an obnoxious group chant.

Sorry dude. I tried. The production is excellent, and these guys are obviously great players, but there isn't a spec of creativity on this whole disc. I gotta chuck it.

It never dawned on me till now that 'the messengers' is most likely a religious reference. Really not digging all this mallcore god lovin goody two shoes metal. It just doesn't feel like there's any authenticity or soul in this whole record (especially for a christian album. hahah). Technically well done on every level, but I'm not feeling it at all, if that makes any sense. I'm really indifferent to whether a band is religious or not, but christian hardcore/metalcore is so oversaturated right now. Why have a message if you're not saying anything new?

Ok, I'm just rambling now. haha.

Ok, I'm just rambling now. haha.

I don't even know where to start, because i disagree with every word you wrote. Not just a little, but the whole fucking post. So i won't even respond as i usually do.
Messengers is not one of my fav albums...ABR is not one of my fav bands...i just think they are one of the better players of a genre that is already played out. Like unearth and darkest hour, i think they get lumped into the usual crowd when they themselves are the ones that helped start the genre that eventually got played out.
It would be as if saying that metallica and slayer are boring because the overabundance of shitty thrash that came out of the genre they basically created....it just doesn't make any sense. You can't really blame the forerunners of a genre for the filth that was created after them can you?
Lastly, i gotta say this: you confuse the shit out of me. You say that this album is boring and predictable, but then you turn around and say that stuff like bury your dead is good?! I just got finished playing beauty and the breakdown (i bought it at the advice of a friend....after which i curbstomped him and shit on his chest for EVER giving me the advice to listen to that noise) and i have to say it is one of the most boring albums ever made. I would have rather listened to Hanson, no joke. There are a maximum of 5 notes/power chords per song, terrible drumming (honestly, post-production songs usually have very clean drumming...i can actually hear copious errors throughout the album), boring song structure, and the singer honestly needs to be burned alive. He has a terrible voice, write horrendous lyrics, and when he feels the need to, he randomly yells out "FUCK," basically telling everyone listening that their music cannot speak for itself, so he needs to toughed it up by yelling out an adolescent curse word. YEAH, HARDXCORE BURY YOUR FUCKING DEAD. Retarded.
I just don't understand how you can think that metalcore like ABR is boring and turn around and give those wannabes any credit whatsoever.

Ya man. Bury Your Dead is TOTAL bonehead music. There's really no way to explain why I like it. And I definitely won't defend their musicianship. And they SUCK live. So in spite of all that, why do I like them? I have no idea.

And I've gotta disagree when you claim that August Burns Red are the Metallica or Slayer of metalcore. Besides the great production and playing on the record I couldn't find anything to like. I was just really bored all the way through. I'm not saying Bury Your Dead are better, I just find more to enjoy in their stuff than ABR. No bashing of anyone's personal taste. Metalcore just bores the crap out of me. Too bad everyone's calling everything new 'something-core'. Like death-core. Jeeeez! The word 'death' is core enough. haha. All 'core' means now is 'a wussier version of-'.

But since the weather's gotten nicer, and WAY to humid where I live, I've had to pull out some more upbeat shit lately, so most of my metal is taking a backseat to Alice in Chains, Temple of the Dog, old Metallica, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, shit like that. Great music for a nice day. Then when it looks like a storm's comin I reach for the new Opeth. God I love that record.

Cunning, who's music sucks? Mine, his, or both?
What d'you listen to?

Listening to now: Temple of the Dog - Reach Down

Oh i wasn't saying that ABR are the metallica or slayer of metalcore. Like i said, they aren't even in my top 10 bands. I was just using that as a reference.
Everyone seems to get mad at metalcore that all of it sounds the same. I really don't blame critics for saying this...luckily for me, i like how most of it sounds, so this doesn't bug me. It's like when people starting hating nu-metal...i was still loving every horrible rap/rock moment of it! Call me simple, i don't mind the whole 'riff-sing along chorus-riff-solo-sing along chorus-end' pattern. Sure, when a band like human abstract comes and does a song incredibly different, it's a breath of fresh air. But the old pattern works for me. WHEN DONE PROPERLY. Which few bands can do.

I've actually been listening to a lot of postal service and eminem recently. I know, a HUGE difference from metal, but hey, my music taste is eclectic, what can i say.

Tried to download some postal service but it turned out to be wma files, and since I'm an iPod whore now, that doesn't mesh. Though I did finally find some Blood Brothers again. I'll try it out again soon. Can't stand eminem, but I see the appeal. The guy can rhyme, I'll give him that.

Since you're big on metalcore (even though this is kind of a stretch) you should try out Protest the Hero. Yes, I hated them at first. Saw 'em live back when they were emo, and boo'ed them off stage. Funny, in their interview with revolver they talk about that show and how they're still bitter. haha. But their new album is incredible, in song writing and instrumental skill. Even though they're kind of biting their sound from a band called SikTh, who are incredible, they do their own thing with it. Very technical and spazzy but still enough melody that you won't get lost in the crazyness.

Well everyone seems in agreement about Postal Service. I'll get on that.
Speaking of, I do really like the new (last) Day Without Dawn record. A bit of a downer, but good stuff for a cloudy day.

Ewww, Parkway Drive. hahaha. There's that pop culture referencing I've been bitching about. 'Knives for a pro' my ass, sing about what you know mascara boy.
I heard the Jonbenet a while ago. Not my cup o' tea if i remember right.

Listening to: A - One Day

Everyone listen to 'A'. Great, great, great British rock. Very upbeat. The emo kids should have no problems getting into it.

Dethklok concert in 10 days! WOOOOO!

Mascara boy? They are far from emo...hell, they have a song that's sole purpose is to make fun of emo's. They take the road of revenge rather than the road of whining about silly bitches.
