Ya, deathcore is definitely not harder than death metal. In fact, Whitechapel are so good that I'm marking them down as death metal instead, I just don't hear the 'core' in it. They probably got labeled 'core' since they're a young band and no one wants to make the distinction between genres when they could just so easily fit neatly into this new scene.

Check out a band called Bloodbath, then tell me deathcore bands are heavier. Don't get me wrong, I don't love all death metal, some of it's incomprehensible noise, but when it's done right, like Bloodbath, it's amazing, and feels so much more sincere than the 'core' bands. Though I do really like Job For A Cowboy.

But music's music i guess. Not gonna be loyal to a genre for name sake. If it's good, I'll listen to it. Just a little too much derivative shit goin on in deathcore right now. Shame cause I really liked that cricket-type grunt before everyone started doing it.

Listening To: Mother Love Bone - Come Bite the Apple

You like JFAG? Ugh...they've grown on me a little more since genesis came out, but it still hasn't hit me as good yet.
When it comes to deathcore, my favs are as blood runs black, all shall perish, winds of plague, black dahlia murder, despised icon, the faceless, through the eyes of the dead, suicide silence, and 7 horns 7 eyes.

Black Dahlia Murder aren't deathcore. They preceeded that bullshit term. They're metal, a little death, a little black, a little thrash. Can't we just call bands metal anymore?

And ya, I do like Job For A Cowboy. Because once their cd's done playing I can remember the songs as songs. Most of these deathcore bands just write brutal riffs and stitch 'em together, so when the album's done I can't remember shit, because all they were trying to do was pummel me with riffs and breakdowns instead of crafting real songs.

And Despised Icon is good shit too. One of the best of the cricket-grunt bands.

BDM have a lot of breakdowns and other -core qualities on miasma and nocturnal. They're good at it though...it doesn't get annoying like it does with a lot of other bands though.
As for jfac, i can't really agree with that. I like embedded and strings of hypocrisy, but the rest of the cd just kind of blends together as the same thing over and over again. Nothing really stands out. And i can't listen to anything on their previous EP (Doom i think it was called?) without laughing at the slaughterhouse squeels.
I like the ills of modern man by despised icon...not a fan of their older stuff. I think the funniest song on my entire iPod is Compelled to Copulate, simply because of the squeels they pull off at the end. It's utterly ridiculous, but not in the "i'm trying to be ridiculous" way...more in the "lmao at these fools" way.

Sparingly used, I love those squeels. haha. The most hilarious Despised Icon song I can think of is Harvesting the Deceased. The entire chorus i pig grunts. haha.

And JFAC's Doom EP never gets old for me. I love the womanly scream near the beginning of Entombment of a Machine. haha. With Genesis I can totally understand how the album would all blend together for you, it did for me at first too. And I'm sure, had I not listened to it very much, it would've stayed that way, as is what happens with most deathcore I try out.

I just hate this division of metal right now. Death metal fans hate deathcore and vice versa. So dumb, they sound so similar. I only hate crappy bands, despite the genre someone stuck on them. A lot of these bands fall into the deathcore category, but that doesn't mean I'm ignorant to good music because of what someone has labelled it. I almost didn't check out Whitechapel because I just presumed they were boring typical deathcore. How wrong I was.

Seriously though, check out Bloodbath. Particularily their newest EP 'Unblessing the Purity', or 'Resurrection Through Carnage'. Those are the 2 with their original singer, Mike from Opeth. the difference about these guys is that they're not afraid to have well produced album. Most death metal bands' stuff comes out very low-fi and a crystal clear album would mean 'selling out' or something. Plus he's maybe the only death metal singer who I can actually understand the words as he grunts.

Haha that's off of the Healing Process right? Man, i haven't listened to that CD in a long while.
I don't hate death metal, but in the same way, i'm hesitant towards checking out bands that are classified as such. They are usually more talented, but i find that they get repetetive way too fast. But i don't simply say i hate the genre or ignore bands that fall within the genre just because of their classification. How ignorant can you get? I tend to like bands that straddle the line, like black dahlia murder and abigail williams.
I'll check out bloodbath whenever i get the time. Pretty busy for the next few days.

Currently listening to: Heaven Shall Burn - Counterweight (great song)

Counterweight... that's off Antigone right?
I have a bunch of their stuff but I haven't listened to 'em in a long time.
I do know I love that album though.

Counterweight is off Deaf to our Prayers.
Ironically, i'm listening to Numbing the Pain, which IS off of Antigone haha. Crazy how that worked out.

Hey jar, have you heard the Faceless? You could like em or hate em, i dunno. I have them classified as deathcore, but they really don't have many (if any) breakdowns. Definitely have some crazy time shifts and shit like that. Check em out...songs like Leica and All Dark Graves are dope. Interested to hear your opinion of them.

I'll look em up soon. I hate this fucking firewall I have here at work. Anything I feel like checking out I have to write a little note to myself for later.

And I'm not a breakdown-hater. haha. Just some bands have too many of them that all sound alike.

Listening to: Lostprophets - Davidian (Machine Head Cover)
My lord I'm impressed with this cover, maybe there's some hope for lostprophets yet.

Haha no i'm not saying you were a hater of breakdowns, i was just saying that it's not the usual metalcore/deathcore. It has a little heart within it.
And you are blasphemous for saying lostprophets has hope Razz

Currently listening to: Amon Amarth: Valhall Awaits Me

haha, ya i know. I'm alone on that one. Their last cd REALLY blew it for me. But before then I was a pretty big fan, and occasionally I can get over it and check out their old stuff. Like I said, I listen to everything, but that new album was just SO EMO, I couldn't believe how much they could suck. haha.

They probably don't have any hope really, but their Machine Head cover was very repectfully done. All the nuances of the song still intact, and he does a surprisingly good vocal mimic for such a little whiny guy. Kinda like when Avenged Sevenfold covered Walk by Pantera. Actually, a lot of those Kerrang! covers were really good, though you always get the occasional emo band trying to cover some 90's song I like and it makes me want to punch faces. haha.

Alriiiiiiight, all the day timers are gone. Time to watch the new Dethklok again. haha.

I haven't heard many of those, though i should probably check them out, because i usually like covers. As much as i don't like evergreen terrace, i liked that they made an entire album of covers and named it "Writer's Block." Thought it creative in my mind.
Have you heard machine head's cover of Message in a Bottle by the Police? It's pretty well done imo.

Oh ya, from the Burning Red. That was a major contributor to the shit I listened to in high school. Then I find out "What? That was Machine Head selling out? Their better stuff must be amazing!!!". haha. Still a great album.

If you wanna look for those Kerrang! cd's they're called 'High Voltage' and 'Higher Voltage'. Also there's the entire Master of Puppets tribute album they did with Machine Head, Mastodon, Chimaira, Trivium, etc. not really big on Trivium but it's pretty obvious they've got Metallica boners, and they end up doin a great Master of Puppets cover. Though Machine Head's 'Battery' and Chimaira's 'Disposable Heroes' are probably the standouts.

Here's the wikipedia links:

No wiki for the Metallica tribute but here's another link to it:
arms-music.blogspot.com/2007/01/tribute-to-metallica-va-kerrang.html
(i think you can actually download it from here. you didn't hear that from me, haha)

There's a few gay bands on all cd's but there's some great stuff in between. Watch out for Bullet for my Valentine doing 'Sanitarium'. Ugh! Lame.

Edit: In retrospect, the second cd is almost fully lame, besides a few good ones. Soulfly covering Marilyn Manson is hilarious. And, oh my, Bring Me The Horizon covering Slipknot. Skatehimrock should enjoy that. hahaha

Also don't click on the top link, but copy it all into the address bar, otherwise it takes you to a page about high voltage electricity.

I'll check those out when i'm at home. If i look at em here at work i'll get hooked, and i have to dodge my boss looking over my shoulder right now, so short bursts of internet is all i can afford right now Smile They look decent though...even though i'm not a huge fan of kerring. They jock trivium and bullet WAY too much.

I found 2 really good shows that i think i'm going to hit up. One is black dahlia murder, kataklysm, the faceless, despised icon, vader, cryptopsy, whitechapel, and a few others i'm not too familiar with. Looks to be pretty damn br00tal.
The other (which i'm even more excited about) is darkest hour, parkway drive, misery signals, stick to your guns, winds of plague, arsis, light this city, arsonists get all the girls, after the burial, with special guests (for my city) as blood runs black. I nearly shit on myself when i saw this one.

Cool. Sounds face ripping. No big multi-band shows coming up for me for a while. might check out that mayhem tour for mastodon and machine head, hopefully i'll be drunk by the time disturbed takes stage. My sister's boyfriend's (ex i think) band is opening for kataklysm. Probably just at the toronto show, but i dunno, cause their band kinda sucks and I don't keep up with em.

I'm just psyched for dethklok. I can't even imagine what it's gonna be like. plus chimaira's opening, and they're always good live.

the weekend after i'm seeing mindless self indulgence, which might be equally fucked. not too big on their new album but i like everything before. I'm sure we'll clash on that one too. gonna be a lotta queers at that show. haha

I've never been a huge kataklysm fan, but their new album is good and their always good live. The drummer can throw down the fastest blastbeats out there...seriously, i think he could give suffocation and napalm death a run for their money.
You gotta tell me how the dethlok show goes...that's ridiculous. I love chimaira, but haven't gotten around to seeing em yet. I still kick myself for missing them when they played with all that remains a few years back.
I've never checked out MSI, though i've heard a lot about them. What're they like?
