I know they're kinda scenish and metalcore, but the new bleeding through truly is amazing. Nothing incredibly unique, but the music they construct is just good, solid music. Great drumming, great guitar work, the keyboards give the music an eerie atmosphere, while the singer's voice continues to develop. Amazing production as well. If anything, check out their newest song on myspace...should give you an idea of the album as a whole.

out of curiousity i downloaded it, and you're right. it's much better than usual for them. but the guy still sings, and i hate his singing voice. it's not something i'd listen to often, but definitely an improvment over 'The Truth' or whatever the last cd was called.

Surprisingly I LOVE the music on the new Trivium album, who I normally despise. The bad part is the singer stills does his ballad style lamewad singing, so it's nothing I'll really listen to. SUCH a shame, cause the music is really great, sounds more like classic 90's Gothenburg metal than metalcore.

Yeah, his singing voice is reeeeeeeeeeal hit and miss with me. Sometimes the fact that a singer is off key a tad works when the music is very grunge-like, but when the music is polished (and this is), then it sticks out like a sore thumb. Despite this, this album is very good imo...then again, Bleeding Through is one of my top 10 bands, so that's kind of a given.
Another one of my fav bands that has disappointed me recently, however, is All That Remains. Their newest album Overcome isn't completely terrible...but a definite downgrade. They're taking the Trivium/Bullet for my Valentine route and incorporating FAR too much singing. Singing is great when it adds to the album, but the producer (for some unknown reason, they chose NOT to hire Adam D. to do their production again, which is probably why this album contains no unity) has singer Phil Labonte sounding generic and robotic on some songs. Besides the song Chiron, the album does not really deliver.
I've heard good things about the new Trivium...unfortunately, the singer was always the band's achilles heal imo, so i have little pleasure in checking it out. In the end, i probably will anyways, and hopefully find a way to tune out Matt so i can listen to the great instrumental value.

What bands are considered metalcore? Way too much information to go over. I'm sure wikipedia has a decent article on it. It's generally viewed as a fusion between old-school hardcore punk and metal. Bands like Unearth, Killswitch Engage, and At the Gates fit the bill.

I figured that about All That Remains, so that's why I haven't checked it out yet. Someone in another forum was raving and ranting about it "BEZT ABLUM EVAR!!!! OMG BETTER THEN EVERYTHNG!!!!". But i wasn't buyin that. He was even saying better than Opeth. So I knew he was off his nut. haha

At The Gates are Gothenburg Metal, one of the first to create that sound. That sound paved the way for metalcore (sorry if I sound like a biographer, haha). Just take old In Flames, At The Gates, Soilwork and Dark Tranquillity, throw in some shitty clean singing and bring the songwriting down about 10 notches, and that's what I call metalcore, the bad stuff anyways. The good stuff takes those elements and makes something worthwhile out of it. Like... I dunno, old Killswitch. I'd say Alive or Just breathing would be my favourite metalcore album, if I had to choose.

Not all of it's bad, the best stuff reminds me of old Gothenburg shit. That's why the new Trivuim breaks my heart. I expected a complete waste of an album, but the music is REALLY good. If not for his singing I would swallow my pride and actually like them again.

Try it out, if you like Killswitch type bands then the singing might not bother you so much. I wish I could get around it. If you ever see an instrumental version (it happens occasionally, Protest The Hero put one out) let me know and I'll be all over that.

I won't comment on the metalcore stuff, because it is my favorite genre, despite the numerous numerous numerous bands and numerous numerous numerous fans that destroy its good elements.
I agree that At the Gates is gothenburg....but Slaughter of the Soul is widely considered one of the first metalcore albums ever made. I happen to agree with this, Blinded by Fear being my favorite song on that groundbreaking album.

I'm gonna stop the quoting now before it gets out control. hhah.

Slaughter of the Soul sounds like metalcore style, but it helped build the Gothenburg sound, which eventually gave way to metalcore. Know what I mean. It can't actually be a metalcore album because that genre didn't exist back then. And besides, almost all metalcore has melodic singing in it somewhere, and At The Gates have none.

I dunno, it's debatable I guess. But I definitely agree with you that it was one of the first records to sound like that. But if you're gonna call that album metalcore then you might as well branch off and call all of Gothenburg metalcore. Funny part is In Flames is now doing a shitty job at copying the bands that worshiped them when they first started. really sad actually. Man that new In Flames album sucks.

never heard of Flobots.
you listen to other Metallica besides Load/Re-load though right? Earlier stuff?

ya, i used to love Incubus. But I don't care for their new shit at all. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is one of my absolute favourites, but they sound nothing like that anymore.

Man i've been so busy at work i've had no time for this forum. Just been listening to Bleeding Through's Declaration, All Shall Perish's Awaken the Dreamers, and Abigail Williams' In the Shadow of a Thousand Suns lately.
Bored off my ass right now, waiting for my girlfriend and her friend to show up with a bottle of vodka right now...hopefully the night pays off.
Sounds like you've had fun lately eh jarsofsap? Wink Nothing like a bunch of criminals and a few dime bags for a kickass time.

Ya, it was like a reverse intevention. dimebags weren't the only things flying around that night. haha. but it worked out. was on meds that were fuckin with my brain, causing depression. just bad shit. so i stopped takin my meds that day and went out partying with those guys. it was like my shit moods hit a brick wall. woke up the next day feeling completely different, and the bullshit appears to be over. except now i think i have a cold. lame cause this weekend is Nuit Blanche. the all-night art festival dealy all over Toronto. Went last year and it was totally bizarre. and there's some sort of zombie event thing this year. goona be intersting.

it runs all over Toronto from 7pm to 7am. i'm hoping to be in before the sun comes up but i wasn't last year. hahah

you're drinking vodka with 2 chicks at 1pm? haha. maybe the timezones are diff (i have no idea where you are) but that sounds like a decent party. haha. enjoy that shit man. i'll get my partying done next thurs when i go camping again... in the freezing cold. haha

party on wayne! party on garth!
