it seems to me that they were stalking rob and company untill they started running away...

Kind of like a dog that doesn't chase you untill you run away..

 		If you watch the scene with the parasite by Beth's apartment, it does seem to be a bit confused until Rob hits it with the ax.

On the topic of echo location doesn't Hud after turning on night vision shout "RUN" and then they all start screaming. I'm guessing the parasites if blind don't realise they are there or kinda just don't see them as a threat untill BAM! Hud starts screaming and they mis-interpet it for an attack on them.
