I hear ya. I'm also worried that it will be too hard for me. I'll pay the money and then get stuck and watch my money drift away. The journal sounds like a pretty neat souvenir though...

I haven't paid yet either - luckily as one of the previous games winners I got a free copy of the journal ! I still need to pay if I want to play though, so I will, although I really doubt I've any chance at the prize. I figure £25 is less than I've paid for some Playstation/ Wii games, and I hope this will give me more play time (or puzzle time, or brainhurt time).
So far I've just read the story and looked at a couple of the easier codes. I'd actually waited until I got it before posting this thread as I wanted to see what it was like (and make sure it was worth mentioning to you guys). It's a pretty good read, loads of historical stuff, and a lot to puzzle through. Like I said in my first post I'm not sure if it's all factual, or not, but it seems like it is.
Some of the puzzles in the book look quite hard at first glance, which I guess you'd expect with a prize at stake. Having said that there's still some of the online puzzles that I'm getting nowhere with.
EDIT: BTW What's the view on sharing answers/ helping each other with clues? (I ask because I think my little brain is now leaking out of my ears due to the strain...)

Is the journal cool? Or kind lame?
And I'm sure it's cool to share answers and help each other out. We did that with Covet even though there were prizes at stake. They also said there was a forum where you could try to collaborate if other people were willing to. So I think they kind of expect it.

It's well cool, 192 pages, and very good quality, like you said it'll make a nice souvenir. There's loads to read, historical detail, the puzzles and codes, drawings etc. and it reads well too, in a Da Vinci Code/ National Treasure style.
If it was just the journal on its own I wouldn't pay £25, however there's the prize and the web stuff so everything considered I think it's worth it. I'm holding off paying up until I can't get any further on the puzzles, as I think there may be hints online (based on one of the pics). There's also a blog, probable interaction with Rachel, the console thing and whatever else they throw at us.
On the lined_paper puzzles I've cracked 1-6 and 9-14, getting nowhere on 7, and got a partial solve for 8. For 15 & 17 I've had a quick look but have no ideas so far, I think I've solved 16, but it could be more complex than I am thinking. FWIW I think these are all just general hints, rather than clear clues to the treasure, so sharing is def cool - if anyone else is playing?

I'd be happy to share too. Not that I'm likely to solve anything before you lot anyway! Incidentally, I happen to have a replica of the Phaistos disc! I can also only seem to find the same things in the study as Nighthawk. I guess I will keep looking!
EDIT: Found the other thing,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the door plate.
anyone found anything else?

That's all the puzzles I've found, but there are other things you can download in the Tour, such as the police report etc.
BTW I don't think we need to solve the Phaistos Discs, or Zodiac code as they aren't numbered (just as well as no-one has solved them yet!)
EDIT: OK I've got them all except 7, 15 & 17, and really getting nowhere with those ones..anyone want to trade answers?

Apologies for double posting, but Rachel's blog is up:
http://rachelrichleau.blogspot.com/
There's nothing cloo-like I can spot so far, but it does seem to promise some sort of interaction.
Unfiction gets a mention, although I'm not really sure whether an IG blog can reference us here as part of the reality? I'm sure it causes some sort of TINAG/ TIAG explosion, like mixing matter and anti-matter... (Also I get a mention which is nice of them considering I just pointed out some errors in their puzzles )

Well if you want any hints let me know especially if you can help me with 7 or 15 (got the rest now). I'll need to start on the book now cos I'm totally stumped on those two..

Just got this..
Quote:
Hi,
Thank you for registering to help find my father - I really appreciate your help.
The huge response to my plea has been amazing, with players coming from over 60 countries and from every continent. We've even been featured on local radio and I've set up a blog that you can access and catch up on the latest developments. Please feel free to comment or email me.
While I've got your attention; either my father was in a hurry or I didn't copy them correctly, but I did notice some small errors in the papers on his desk. If you couldn't solve one of the puzzles this might be why. I updated the document on Monday so you can download it from the study.
I've also attached a PDF of the first 15-pages of my father's journal. If you feel you can help I'll send you the whole 200-page journal immediately and the illuminated manuscripts when they are released by the police. Let me know by subscribing.
Warm regards,
Rachel

I've whistled through some... And yet others have left me absolutely stumped.
I still can't get 4, 7, 8 or 9 in the study. I feel I must be missing something obvious...
I've noticed that in number 7:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the shields are those of the 25 surety barons of the Magna Carta plus the royal symbol. 26 different shields = letters of the alphabet surely. But in what order?
I'm enjoying it though - the level of detail is impressive.

I must admit, 4 is causing me some problems as well!
7..Bleurgh. The last four words, letter count 3,3,2,3, really don't look like the end of a sentence or phrase. Just doesn't fit. Unless
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
it's a family motto or similar.
I'm stumped.
8... I can't make out the letters of the seal properly, if I could, I may have an idea about decoding it. Of course, I could be on the wrong track completely!
9....I know the words of the circle relate to:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Catherine of Aragon's monument at Ampthill. Midday at the spring equinox the shadow pointed to the burial place of the golden hare from Kit Williams' "Masquerade" (man I loved that book!).
But as for the code...

Could be, could be... With 4 I have noticed:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
That the I's are struck out of Mephistophelian Obstruction - which is also what Hubert is going to do to Arthur in Shakespeare's play King John - but he has a crisis of confidence and doesnt do it. I have also noticed that the number of letters in Mephstophelan Obstructon is the same as the number of letters in the ciphertext. But I can't make anything out of that.
In 8 the words round the seal:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Are "Sigillum Militum Xpisti", which is the seal of the Knights Templar. The number of letters in the seal - even taking into account the : and + don't happily marry up with the letters of the alphabet. Even if they did, assume it is a cipherwheel - which M do you look at before moving it 2 to the right? Yet it seems the key must change regularly because otherwise there are too many of the same letters. So the numbers refer to some kind of shift and the letters to - what? Gaah.
In 9
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If it is a Maskerade reference then the hangman letter spacings across the middle should read "close by ampthill". But how does that help decipher the ciphertext?
I know I must be missing something obvious.

Welcome springb!
Your first spoiler (good one BTW!) suggests
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
a Vigenere cypher key-word.
Give me a few moments....
EDIT: Nope.
EDIT2 : With regards to 15, what we see on the globe appears to be
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The Roman Empire. Note that Ireland is missing from the UK, and it stops at about the right eastern point. Don't know if that helps?
Could that point us to..... Erm, should I share this? I'm happy to, but don't want to spoil things?

Hey guys, glad to have some more minds working on this!
Well I think the best approach is clues/ hints, but if there's one that we're all stuck on maybe share more?
For #7, good spot with who the shields belong to, I wasn't getting anywhere with it, so that gives me something more to look into.
#4 is a tricky one, it took we a while, then some lateral thinking helped, you're on the right track
#8 also took me a while, and you're also getting very close, but you're going wrong at one step -
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
it might help doing a letter count
#9 it helps if you have the right spelling & of course type of cipher
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
(veebee does)
#15 any hints you want to give I'll take. I even started playing with the words as an anagram, but there's so many letters...so many letters...
