[HATE] i hate cloverfield joke, in a way. i just hate it because its kind of like eating a really delicious sandwich then having the last bite vanish into thin air, then never getting anything to drink. i don't think that all of our questions will be answered ever. so its a mixed feelings relationship i suppose. cloverfield could ruin my life if its never brought to a close, and now more than ever im feeling that way. anyone else wishing they'd never got mixed up in this ARG business and were just a simple movie goer?

I think I have to disagree. Being the uber-busy chic that I am, I didn't even know there was an ARG/ARE until after I had seen the movie and decided to look it up online after I had seen it.
And of course I got completely sucked into the story. My family and friends thought I was freaking nuts for spending 2 and a half weeks straight researching and studying the backstory.
I'm really excited about the upcoming translation of Kishin; I think it may answer a few more questions for me rather than create more. And yes, like that wonderful sandwich, even if I lose the very last bite, I have relished the rest of it!
Before Cloverfield, I had never heard of an ARG; and I can say that this has added a very fun and exciting dimension to this movie for me. Not to mention reading the fantastic, funny, and thought-provoking discussions I have read here on UnFiction.
And hopefully, I will have a sequal to look forward to.

Glad you enjoyed the backstory, and welcome to the board!
Might I say that some (myself included) will argue that the backstory we got for Cloverfield doesn't really qualify as a -true- ARG/ARE. It was more of a viral story. ARGs as a rule tend to have a LOT of player interaction and puzzle solving.
If you want to see what a real ARG looks like, check out the following wiki links:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternate_reality_game
The definition and history of ARGs
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beast_%28game%29
The grandaddy of them all, set in the universe of the movie AI.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Experience
The first of two AREs for the TV show LOST
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Love_Bees
Built by the same folks as the Beast for the release of Halo 2.
I chose those 3 examples because of the sheer amount of player involvement required, from puzzling solving to tracking down real world locations and symbols. I'm sure others on this board have their favorites as well.

i LOVE cloverfield.
i enjoy the sandwich reference, though
but, at the same time, i like that we aren't given everything. it keeps us here, it keeps us talking and wondering.
there are so many movie that come out, where all you can really say when you leave the theatre is "that movie kicked ass!", and then there is nothing more to really think about the movie.
but with this film, we are left with so many questions, so many things to wonder about. i think it is fun.
it would've cheaped the movie for me if some dr. scientist came out near the end and said "this is what these things are. this is why they came. this is what we must do".
i loved it when i left the theatre and was speechless, save for excitedly muttering "what the hell did i just see?"
haha, it reminds me of the old folk stories that my grandmother used to tell me as a child

Same! I've always enjoyed a film that left you with something. It's really entertaining to watch blockbuster hits and then walk out of the theatre, but it's a different story when it's up to you to figure things out. Ever since Cloverfield I've been looking up new ARGs and trying to see if upcoming movies have them, etc etc. Better than a mind dulling tell-all story that's spoonfed to you!

Thank you Talon!!! I have read (skimmed) a couple of those articles already; I find the whole idea of an ARG fascinating. But oh my gosh I barely have time in the day to burp... I can only imagine that there are a lot of people out there with more time to play an ARG than I have. And thankfully so! If it were all up to me you guys would be screwed.
Cloverfield sucked me in, and I am still on here everyday, lurking and reading if not posting.
And I love it!

I would say my favorite ARG/ARE was the NIN Year Zero one. There was a TON of info involved, a heap of RW player interaction, and a downright feeling of "Oh dang, this could really happen!".

Euchre's. ...
Although I understand where K1Ng5p4d3 is coming from, I prolly would have used different wording. Cuz I'm a lady; well, at least most of the time.
But I'm glad he didn't use a different phrase. That kind of eloquence makes for damn entertaining reading!!!
