Throw Out Ideas...Cheap But Effictive "Gimmicks"

I'll skip through the normal lead paragraph, yes I'm working on an ARG, etc. etc. It's going to be self-supporting, i.e. non-advertisement, but one step above grassroots. So, that being said, there's going to be a budget for the game, but nothing extravagant.

What I'm trying to come up with is some cheap, but effective "gimmicks" that I could use in the game. One of my firm beliefs about what makes an ARG good is interaction away from a computer. However, I'm not going to be able to rent out a billboard, or stage a concert under a factory on the budget that I'm running with. So I'm looking for some other thoughts from people.

One thing that I've been playing around with is something similar to Randall Munroe's recent idea with Geohashing. It's an idea where each day there is a algorithmically generated set of coordinates where his fans can randomly choose to meet up at. I was thinking of trying to use something like that - requiring players to meet up, but without any set up from me.

Anyway, those are my thoughts - what are your ideas/past examples?

A random idea that I don't think I'll use (but might be good) is personals/classified ads in the newspaper. It requires you to know your playerbase will read that paper, or you can tell them in advance, and they're pretty cheap. If you can get them cheap enough, perhaps ordering a batch week-on-week to convey more than one message, or parts of a message, might be fun.

What else would be cool is a spin on dead-drops: Leave a box full of trailheads next to a grocery store, and label the box "Take one" Razz

Heighten player interaction, save lots of money, and involve something away from the computer:
Make a part of it that the players need to chain mail an item through each other to an IG character. Each player has to do something with the mail piece, either adding to it or even replacing it (keeping a previous item, then adding a different one). This could be a sort of treasure hunt where you list the items, and they need to relay or accumulate them in order. Let the players work out the shortest distances to mail the items to each other (or even hand them off I suppose) to establish the route. Alternatively, make the route create an image - as someone did with a GPS (thanks to whomever was in #unfiction that showed me that video).

What places the game as being "one step above grassroots"?

Clarification

I don't really know - I'm kind of using that term loosely. The general idea I wanted to convey with that is that the entirety of the game is not going to be Blogspot blogs, Youtube videos, .tk domains, etc. i.e. While I'm not operating with a 42entertainment-esque budget, I am going to be spending a certain amount of money. Hence, in the threat title "cheap" as opposed to "free".

But I can see how the phrase has a ton of ambiguity in it.

Ah, OK.

Yeah, I would still says it's grassroots at its heart, then, because there have been several games that have been produced on a "cheap" budget but without official sponsorship, or advertising goals. Project Mu and Lockjaw were both "cheap" games, in that respect. (and I mention those because I know how they were structured)

I would, however, like to recommend that Stroopwafels are no longer to be defined as "dessert," but a "daily multivitamin."

I think that the ideas behind geocaching in general are a great way to get your players away from the computer. There's a great mystique in following a GPS signal to a goal. Smile

Now, whether you decide to take that one step further and make it more than just a geocache is up to you.

In-character interaction, if your actors/actresses are volunteer, can also be a relatively cheap and easy way to host a small live event. You don't need a huge budget to have a small IG meetup in, say, Central Park. Smile
