Also, concerning DHARMA, it's strange to me that although Hanso's family has a historical connection to the Island (via Magnus), it's the DeGroots who start the initiative. Here's a bit of wild speculation: I wonder if the DeGroots mightn't just be some kind of front. Not that I can see why that would be necessary.

You know, I've always wondered that myself. Other that a few seconds on an 8mm and maybe a still shot or two, we have no other conformation that the DeGroots even existed....

EDIT: now that I think about it... The DeGroots are the 'thought', and Hanso (at inception at least) is the 'motion'. Following that line of reason, I would assume that the DeGroots published some sort of academic thesis and that money-man Hanso (with prior knowledge of The Island) saw a perfect place to conduct their experiments.
What do ya think?

The involvement of Widmore or Paik is unknown at this point.

nice. thanks!

(also some may want to check a post I made last page - a very quick little history lesson)

So, neither Paik nor Widmore were mentioned in TLE (other than some obtuse phone message by Mittelwerk)?

Do we know any back-story on Valenzetti, the person? (sorry if that is a lazy and ignorant question, but I'm pretty sure I've been through most of TLE's data and don't distinctly remember with whom the equation started, nor the impetus to work on the equation.)
Also thank you for reminding us all of The Valenzetti Equation (TVE)!!

And the '87 data point, I assume, was THG cutting its funding? Or where there possibly other, confirmed backers?

BTW for those that are interested in following the rabbit through TLE'land do not watch the Sri Lanka Video, until you've stepped your way through TLE Wink

p.s. how do you direct link a post here? (I've got the post # just don't know the syntax for the link)

http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Enzo_Valenzetti - read this

Widmore was mentioned briefly as having interest in the "other projects" at the Hanso Foundation, but nothing significant had been revealed.

and yes, 1987 was when Hanso supposedly cut the funding. But, again, the truth of that is questionable.

Apopheniac79--the Lostpedia link for everything Valenzetti
Sorry,I didn't undestand your question about a post #link but you can link or attach just about anything here, even very hard to find books..... Laughing

Ah, yes. Gary Troup. He was the guy that got sucked into the engine during the Pilot episode. He created the book "Bad Twin" that started The Lost Experience.

Either just paste the post url (for those that don't know, you can obtain it from the little page icon at the bottom of each post (next to the word "Posted: Time...)) and it should convert itself to a link automatically; or, if you want to make it more readable and conceal the url behind something like "this post", do
Code:
[url=http://...]this post[/url]

I assume, there will be no more solid leads until Comic-Con. So, in the interim, I suggest that we open up the thread for questions (even devil's advocate questions) that are
1)related to OctagonGlobalRecruiting
2)TLE/Lost questions not readily available (or points that may be available but are hard to pin-down)
3)The hereditary or business connections with those associated with DHARMA.
What do you all think about that? Anything else that should be used as a parameter?

Apopheniac79, Widmore really is only briefly mentioned by Mittelwerk. On the other hand, Paik Heavy Industries was directly involved on the construction of Helgus Antonius, a hospital ship that, according to Rachel Blake, partially confirmed by the Sri Lanka video, was used for testing a disease that could reduce the human population to a number that could alter the results of the Valenzetti equation, after the enviromental experiments have failed.

Deletia, did the DeGroots start the initiative alone? After watching the orientation films and the Sri Lanka video, I had the impression that Alvar Hanso was involved since the beginning; he would provide the money and the DeGroots the scientifical stuff. I also suppose that Hanso knew the island and he was the one responsible for it to be the location of DHARMA.

One little doubt: Sun took a Widmore pregnancy test from Sawyer on The Whole Truth. Was that test already with Sawyer since the crash, along the other items he scavenged, or did he get it from the Swan? It's the only possible evidence of involvement between Widmore and Dharma. If Sawyer took it from someone's luggage after the crash, then there's no evidence at all of Widmore being involved with DHARMA (although we do know that Widmore has been involved with Hanso Foundation during Mittelwerk's takedown).

Per my understanding (limited though it may be) the entire Blake saga is considered non-canon. The history of TLE, from what I understand, is to be believed. Given that, I still have no 'canonical' (pre-purge) reference to either Paik or Widmore. Right?

I suppose, as well Smile

No, the pregnancy test was from the luggage. Sun and Kate have a conversation about the incredulity of a passenger bringing along a pregnancy test and not just using it right away. Wink

EDIT: Per Lostpedia: A pregnancy test was given to, and taken by Sun in "The Whole Truth". Sawyer had found it with the items he took from the crash. The pregnancy test result did come out positive.
* The brand of the pregnancy test used by Sun, Kate, and Rachel is "Widmore Labs".
* The Widmore Pregnancy test box contains 108 letters.

Per Lostpedia's transcript:
[We see Sun and Kate sitting on the beach. Kate has the instructions to the pregnancy test.]
SUN: How long is it supposed to take?
KATE: Uh, up to two minutes.
SUN: I'm sorry -- I'm just...
KATE: I know. Where did Sawyer find one of these anyway? I mean, who flies with a pregnancy test, right?

Shocked Silly woah, never occured to me either. That's pretty interesting, as a matter of fact... at one point in time, there were three separate groups on the island: Rousseau's expedition, the natives, and DHARMA. Even more interesting is the fact that, although it never made it to the show, so technically it's not cannon, but Rousseau's team was investigating "time"... so both DHARMA, and Rousseau (and presumably our good friend Richard) were all knew about the island's unique properties at the time...

Then the question becomes did Ben take Alex from Rousseau while he was in DHARMA, or did the natives take Alex, and then later "give her" to Ben...

...curiouser and curiouser...

(can't wait to start saying that more!)

I think diagrams are quite unnecessary. We have Lostpedia, which is the best source for infomation for LOST. We also have a few diehard fans (like me) that can help any newbees with their questions. Although, if you're new to lost, this game probably wouldn't be a good fit for you.

I caught up on a bunch of episodes a season or two ago, and it's not too difficult to get into the swing of things. Hindsight on the series, now that some things have been revealed or clarified will make it easier on people new to the series. They don't have to wait for the results of a cliffhanger, between the first few seasons, after all. Wink

I'm not sure of the process here on unfiction as I am only an occasional visitor, but would it be appropriate for the mods to go ahead and set up a forum for this next phase of the LOST ARG/ARE/thingy since there is obviously a lot of interest here?

It would be nice already to have a few separate discussion threads such as Dharma Initiative background, What is Canon?, Octagon Global Recruiting website, etc.
