Re: A trail of bread crumbs?
Not sure if these are official "clues" or not but better off posting them then not.

Ugly cycle, right? Is there a way to lock this thread down and open a new one when the game finally starts? I think it would help cut down on posts like Lucky Charms'.

Yes, usually once a game gets going and it is out of the Pre-game stage, the mods move it out of Rumors and into it's own thread.....hopefully they will do that as soon as the recruiting episode starts.

A quick look reveals someone being completely cryptic about nothing in particular.

"I am not a game nor do I exist in an alternate reality" is a direct reference to Alternate Reality Gaming which a character in an ARG wouldn't even be aware of.

Plus, blogspot and wordpress? I don't think that Disney/ABC/Msc. Sponsor would be so cheap.

I was thinking the same thing... but I REALLY want it to be the start Smile

It is worth checking out and maybe keeping an eye on.

edit: also the blogspot has been moved http://jbentham.wordpress.com

and the twitter seems to be gone

Rachel Blake used Blogger; the "View My Complete Profile" links to a Blogger profile, but doesn't link back, so it may be hosted on a dedicated server and only give that impression.

Mandrake Wig used MySpace, so free public portals are still fair game.

But yes, Disney/ABC has a pretty big hosting network anyway; they have the framework that is/was Go Networks. The only reason they would ever third party anything is for advertising purposes.

Finally, it's not a matter of being cheap... MySpace has a billion users; it's kinda nice to have access to them directly. Using a separate site disassociates you from the already pre-existing user base of the site in question.

That is what I was thinking. It gives it more of a sense of REALITY when you are communicating with someone on a site that you already use as part of your daily routine... at least for me anyway.

@ Nighthawk

Point taken so let me re-phrase. Considering the TV ad and "Global Recruiting" angle, it's my opinion that, even if inexpensive sites play a role, the game will start on a higher profile, corporate note.

As to the blog itself, even with timetravel I find it a bit odd that Jeremy Benthem is able to maintain it seeing as he's laying (mostly) dead in a coffin.

I agree that the blog is not related/somebody's attempt at a gamejacking.

But didn't Ben imply that they were going to bring Locke back from the dead? The way that Jack's (and Claire's) father was?

(If necessary trout, I could be way off, I just watch the show, don't go reading lostpedia and stuff)

Yes, but if (and this is a completely different discussion) Jeremy Bentham is John Locke, he's not only not the type to sit around blogging, but also wouldn't rise from the dead until he was returned to the Island. Although it's possible that he could blog from there, he just isn't that guy, ya know?

I doubt that this game will have anything to do with the characters currently struggling with events surrounding the Island. It's more likely, although apparently in the wrong timeframe, that Octagon is recruiting for Dharma's initial incursion onto the Island.

wasn't that in the 60's? look at the equipment they brought with them, definitely not modern..

I pretty much listen to all the podcasts by the producers and they already mentioned that the majority of season 5 is going to be Dharma centric, so i'm thinking they're finally sending a new team, either to ascertain what happened to the old one, carry on their work, or most likely both.

I agree. If I am not mistaken the other LOST ARG have been centered around characters that are not on the show. Rachel Blake & Sam (I think).

Whatever will happen, we are now in July (finally!) and Comic-Con is almost around the corner.

@lostgunslinger2

I think that it was the 70's but I also can't see why Octagon would be recruiting all those types of people for Dharma if it was just a team for ascertaining what happened.

Man, I hate pre-game groundless speculation and I seem to be the main source of it. Rolling Eyes

Trust me, it wasn't the 60's or even early 70's, as computers required city block sized buildings and punch cards back then.....my mom had a second "night" job doing keypunch and I used to go with her and code them too....the first "microcomputer" wasn't introduced until 1970--the Datapoint 2200. But that kind of computer didn't have a keyboard and monitor. Those came around 1977.

If I had to "place" their computer equipment, I would say early 80's...IBM purchased the DOS operating system from a tiny little company (at the time) called Microsoft late 1980 I think and it hit the market August 1981. All the screens I have seen on the show look like DOS, however the predecessor was CP/M and it looked similar. CP/M was available late 1977 or early 1978. All in all I would probably place the Dharma equipment right around 1982.
Wink

I don't usually like pre-game spec either, but I can't help but trip over the obvious. I personally think THIS recruitment is gonna do the Time Warp shuffle right back to 1982---'cuz just about every moron on the planet in 2008 knows the basics of computers, a rare and highly paid skill back in the day. So those of you chosen: just take a little jump to the left, and then a step to the right........

No one can bother looking on Lostpedia, eh? DHARMA began in the 1970s. The equiptment is probably late 70s-80s.

This thread is getting way off topic. The game needs to start soon before we all go insane...

A quick check at lostpedia.com puts the earliest dated references being the orientaion videos from 1980. The most telling is the Swan video which discuss' pressing the button and how it's necessary because of the "incident". So, not only did the station have to be constructed prior to this video but it's already been in operation long enough to have a history.

Come to the Island, investigate, learn enough to know where to build stations on top of specific points which have "properties", then construct and operate them for an unspecified length of time. I'd put DHARMA's initial arrival at the Island around 1975, no later than 1977. Lostpedia puts the arrival of Ben and his father at 1976/77.

There is no telling how things will go, but, the Octagon video (while well done) is plainly done in an outdated style and it wouldn't be to far of a stretch to consider it as from the 70's. Also, even though we are in 2008, there have been more than a few ARGs that ask that it's players believe that the events are taking place in a different time period.
