Report

Nothing particularly eventful. HitsHerMark was unable to attend, due to my being an idiot and making her think we were doing the labyrinth on Sunday instead of Saturday. Larissa, sockiboo, and I successfully traced the route. No sign of Kentaro.

Pictures, etc. to follow.

No "It was fun!" or "The Trackstick made a wonky pattern!" or nothin'?

So, my day started while I was en route to the Getty Center to pick up Larissa and sockiboo. I got a text message from HitsHerMark, traded a couple with her, and finally just called her. (Of course I pulled over during this process; I am not suicidal.) We worked out some details -- such as where we would be meeting and where she could park -- and just as we were about to hang up she said, "See you tomorrow!"

In the email I'd sent her (and celina63 and krystyn) on Friday night, I'd said we were planning on running the labyrinth "tomorrow." Ordinarily I'd have thought to say "tomorrow (Saturday)" or something like that to avoid possible confusion. But I didn't. So she got the email Saturday morning, and thought that I'd meant Sunday. Oops. So no HitsHerMark. I also received regrets from celina63 and krystyn, so it was just Larissa, sockiboo, and I.

I picked up my esteemed co-pilots at about 1:00 p.m., and gave them each an appropriate Ancient Strength sticker from the supply that Kai had provided along with the Trackstick. We then proceeded to the starting location of the labyrinth, where there happened to be a conveniently located 7-Eleven with a parking lot. (And no lurking Kentaro. Whew.) I switched on the Trackstick, saw the flickering red LED, and knew from the instructions that it would take about 15 minutes to do its Tracksticky magic and lock onto the satellites. So we waited.

And waited.

And waited.

And waited.

And-- you get the idea. The flickering LED is supposed to become solid green, according to the instructions. We waited for over 45 minutes, but it never happened. After discussing our options, we elected to stop waiting and start driving, and snap as many pictures and take as much video as possible. (Fortunately, both Larissa and sockiboo, being better prepared than I, had brought cameras with video capability.) We'd send the whole mess to Eli and let him sort it out, and hope for the best.

I can't speak for Larissa or sockiboo, but I had fun driving around all afternoon. Poor Larissa volunteered to continue holding up the Trackstick until her arm gave out, at which point we clipped it to something pointing in the general direction of Up. The LED never did turn a solid green. Sigh.

The full labyrinth turned out to be almost exactly 20 miles long. It took us just over an hour and a half to traverse it. Let's hear it for L.A. traffic! Highlights included trying to drive across a couple of major streets with no traffic signals, and trying to snap pictures at each turn without being rear-ended or shot at by other irate drivers. (I did end up missing two, but I'm sure that Larissa and/or sockiboo got 'em.) At one point, I was trying to follow a particular street as it took a slight jog, but I ended up turning the wrong way, so there's a one-block section where we are off the route. I hope it doesn't void the pattern, and force us to drive the whole darned labyrinth again...

And now, the punchline: When I finally got back to my computer, I plugged in the Trackstick, and lo and behold it had recorded the entire thing. Apparently the once-every-fifteen-seconds green flicker is as close as it ever comes to a solid green LED. Who knew? So there's a good half hour or more of us just wandering around that intersection experimenting with standing in different locations, followed by the full route. And there is much rejoicing!

My Esteemed Co-Pilots

Yeah, Pita warned us before our labyrinth that the green light is next-to-impossible to see... oh well, glad to see it turned out so well!

i had a hunch that trackstick was holding out on us. and i'm a little relieved--i wasn't looking forward to rapidly cutting all that video together. i'll still do something with it (too much good B-roll to waste), but prolly not in the next few days. hooray!

Supposedly, flashing green means it is recording, which, as stated above, is difficult to see. So if it is not red, you are good, or if it is red for a period of time (when you are traveling straight), it will extrapolate and still work.

Thank you for the story.

Your waiting part was heartbreaking. I hope you had adequate water, anyway. Smile
